Nice pictures - curious what you were using for a camera?

I read somewhere in the forum about "professional" SLRs with interchangeable lenses not be allowed any more, so I went light and brought a Fuji X-E1 with only one lens (Contax G 90mm f2.8) and packed it into a small point & shoot bag so it wouldn't look like much. As it turns out it wasn't checked at all.

Hand-held, manual focus, manual exposure. I was lucky to have a seat against the wall in the front of the mezzanine section so I could stand up and steady myself against the wall without blocking anyone.

Stage photography can be tricky, but it's not as demanding on a camera as other indoor events. The spot lights are very bright and allow me to use a shutter speed of 1/125 which makes hand holding easier and stops most motion on stage. With a f2.8 aperture I only needed to use ISO 500-800 so the images are not noisy.

The trick is to turn the camera off "auto" anything. Don't let it focus or choose exposure. Full manual is the key. A camera's internal meter does not know what to do with a small bright object surrounded by darkness. It will try and make the dark brighter and your subject will blow out.

Sorry about the shaky hand held vid and the sound. I wasn't sure how much gear I could get away with so I left the external mike at home. Next time I'm bringing it.

Thanks for posting the video. Even though Joe does the same songs at each show there are always little differences in the solos and it's cool to be able to see that.
It's almost impossible to hold a camera steady for any length of time. Mine used to wiggle around like mad. Then I got myself a small monopod and it has made a world of difference. It collapses down to about 7" and extends to about 30" so it's easy to carry in and then have the end of it rest on your seat when you're filming. Eliminates those tired arms smile

I have a mondo monopod, but looks like I need to get one more stealthy like the one you mentioned.

I literally stood, leaning against the wall through most of the electric set. The shaking is my back, arms or legs cramping either by themselves or all together! Sucks getting old.

I called the Bushnell months in advance as far as photo taking. They said "No photos whatsoever". I walked in with a pair of binoculars around my neck (concealed in its' case) and also was not checked at all.
I had considered buying one of those binoculars that takes photo's of the viewed image, but figured I'd be wasting my money as it would be confiscated DURING the show?
Next time!!! (grin)
