Obviously the writer does not get it. Oh well, more Joe for us and less for him.
I didn't think it was that bad a review. I think he was not a fan going in but he was wowed to at least say it is hard to not be blown away. Just panned his vocals and since he seemed to know him from his early work that is one thing Joe has noticeably changed himself by ridding himself of the raspyness. Some people prefer his old voice which was more raw and gritty.
The writers tone was just that of a so called critique that has to criticize something to validate themselves as knowing more about the subject than the fans.
Does anyone have the setlist for the Pittsburgh show?
cdom, I have it at home, but as I recall it was the same as Nashville:
Accoustic Set:
Woke Up Dreaming
Seagull
Jelly Roll
Black Lung Heartache
Happier Times
Jockey Full of Bourbon
Dislocated Boy
Ball Peen Hammer
Athens to Athens
Electric Set:
Dust Bowl
Who's BeenTalking
Oh Beautiful
Blues Deluxes
Slow Train
Love Ain't a Love Song
Sloe Gin
Ballad of John Henry
Encore:
Django
Mountain Time
AND, the Pittsburgh show was stunning. Cannot believe this reviewer...he's dead to me.
Thanks Bonametal. You confirmed what I remember. The Post Gazette review says that Joe did Driving Towards The Daylight and I was pretty sure he didn't perform it. I wonder how much attention the reviewer actually gave to the show.
He's probably not a guitar type person......and does not get excited like the rest of us......:)
"...it’s hard to walk out of one of his shows not a little blown away."
That's not bad at all... and pretty accurate from the shows I've seen! I'd argue with some of the rest of the review, but why bother? Focus on the positives.
As a pro reviewer, he must keep his distance a tad. I'd say it's a good one.
Rick
..and they didn't even play "Driving Towards the Daylight"
The "meh" I gave the review was intended to mean not bad, but not great. The compliments given seemed a bit backhanded.

More like a "meow"
I don't play for the newspaper reviewers. I play for you guys.
I am stealing "joe bonamassa is the lady gaga of the blues" line for my 25 th high school graduation quote. Lol...

I knew you'd somehow get a laugh out of that line.

Bring on Syracuse!!!! (Landmark will be Smokin' tonight!!)
Well something good came out of this review...even if it involved Lady Gaga.
It seems like the reviewer is trying too hard to be clever, and failing miserably. The only thing that matters is the venue full of loyal fans having a great evening of blues performed by an exceptional group of musicians. I dont like the whole notion of paid reviewers, in my opinion it serves no purpose and has no value.
