Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

Link to Pete's video of Two Steps Back

A stunning performance and a superb gig, Pete. A great way to end the year, indeed. The Hoax are undoubtedly the best gigging Blues band in the UK and it's great that they are back together again. Can't wait until next April - it'll be good to see them on a larger stage in London.

Thanks for capturing Two Steps, Pete. It's well worth being at the front to take a sneaky peek at the setlist, so when I say "can you record this one, Pete", you know it's going to be a goody. big_smile

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

For me the best Blues album of the year, possibly the last couple of years. stuck to the blues and still have that great energy, havnt been influenced by the producer or manager.

Let there be drums......and there was drums

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

I'm sure Pete won't mind me providing a link to another song from last night's show at The Borderline. Here's Hipslicker, also from the Big City Blues album and a large helping of good old RnB. What a superb voice Hugh Coltman has.

Rick, besides the current album, Big City Blues, I can thoroughly recommend their CD Humdinger, because it certainly is. wink Mine came with a nice DVD of live footage, but whether it plays on your side of the pond I'm not sure. Cathy will know.

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

The previous tour, back in September should really have been called the "Before We Were Interruped" Tour, and from what I witnessed last night at Stockton ARC, instead of the "Big City Blues" Tour - "How To Make A (Sonic) Atomic Bomb" tour would have been a more accurate description.

The "detonator" was Federal Charm, who's powerful & raw twin leads must have served as a reminder to The Hoax of their early days when they were the "upstarts".

They led to the core of fissile material known as Well Hung Heart, or Robin Davey (simultaneous bass & lead guitar & keyboard pedals), Greta Valenti (powerhouse vocals) & Alex Thomas (driving drums). To be expected from one of Robin's side-projects, what was served wasn't blues as you'd know it, but a challenging and compelling mix of art/punk/blues, the likes of which I haven't heard this side of 1979.

Quick change of stage clothes, and on came the critical mass otherwise known as The Hoax. From the get-go, Hugh's plaintive harmonica wail being joined by the lead guitars of Jesse & Jon and the thundering backline of Mark & Robin, they had the ARC at their total command for the full 70 minutes of their main set. High energy Blues thundered round and got most of the standing audience dancing to some degree. It was the slower numbers like Swallow My Pride and Two Steps Back that showed how these once, raw primal guys have matured and developed into the band that is rightly claiming back their crown. Hugh really knows how to step back and really use the microphone to sculpt his fantastic vocals to full effect while also acting as the pivot for the see-sawing guitar exchanges between Jon & Jesse. Then they go back to whipping up a storm with powerhouse Hipslicker and Let Your Light Shine On that caused pieces of God knows what to drift down from the ARC ceiling.

Rumour has it, there's a team of structural engineers on hand for tonight's show at Newcastle Cluny - bands this good + a roomful of Geordies on a Friday night - anything can happen....

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

Going to see them in Wuustwezel Belgium now wednesday 30 april. Maybe their only gig this year in our country.

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

You are in for a treat Walter, amazing concert tonight in Aberdeen. Especially " Swallow my pride" and "2 steps back".

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

Used to follow them round the UK back in the 90's, lucky enough to hang with them after their gigs and bug them about guitars, amps, who's up and coming in the blues world (Chris Duarte was one of their favourite players back then). Got to see them support KWS and Buddy Guy too.

At the gig Buddy played in Birmingham Jesse & Jon used my guitar as a spare, when I got it back they'd got Buddy Guy to sign the scratchplate as well as them all signing their new live CD for me. Top guys!
