Topic: Oklahoma City, OK, 4/8/2014

I know Jim has reviewed this show on another thread but I feel that this concert deserves to have its own space so here goes. This was my fifth Joe show and the first I’ve attended unaccompanied since my two reluctant but otherwise good-natured concert-going companions are both away at college. Nevertheless, I made sure to text them during the show to keep them abreast of the situation. Some selected excerpts:

Me (before the show): I’m looking around and don’t see anybody I know, so sad

Son: You’ll see JB soon, you know him

Daughter: Lol so cheesy

Me (a little later): Joe rocking the Chesapeake!

Son: Lol sure …

Me (not long after): Joe on fire!

Son: Would have been cooler if he WERE on fire

Me (at the end of the show): Crowd chanting Joe, Joe, Joe!

Son: Your hearing is failing you, they’re chanting No No No!

Okay, so maybe my kids will never be into Joe’s music as much as me but, being musically talented themselves, I know they appreciate his amazing artistry and the tremendous pleasure he’s given me these past few years. My fourth row seat was purchased as soon as tickets became available last year and, after months of anticipation and long hours at work, I was more than primed for a cathartic release. I’ve been guilty on previous occasions of spending too much time fiddling with my camera trying to capture that perfect shot of Joe but having done so to my satisfaction in Tulsa two years ago, I decided to leave it at home this time around and simply sit back and enjoy the music. And I’m so glad I did. It might just have been a Tuesday night but Joe and the two bands absolutely smoked it! As is his calling card, Joe took to center stage promptly at 8:00 p.m. and began strumming like a man on a mission. Woke Up Dreaming never sounded better! I’ve watched the Vienna acoustic concert on TV and looked at a few YouTube clips online but experiencing this wonderful group of musicians live is worth the price of admission alone. My favorite tune of the acoustic set was Driving Towards the Daylight. I’ve loved this song ever since I first heard it and was there with Joe note-for-note as he sang his heart out. Yes, I’ll admit it, I did become emotional. Ball Peen Hammer was another song that the band well and truly hit out of the park. During one unbelievably inspired solo, I looked up and realized to my surprise that Joe was playing quietly in the background while the person plucking away like a man possessed was Gerry, the Irish fiddler who had switched instruments from violin to mandolin … he is truly a talented musician! If I’m not mistaken, Joe himself popped a string somewhere along the way. The funniest moment for me came during Joe’s introductions of the acoustic band.  I may not be word perfect here but Derek Sherinian was heralded as being a former member of Dream Theater as well as a “little known group called Black Country Communion who lasted a grand total of 15 shows before they imploded beneath a barrage of e-mails, tweets and Instagram messages”! I don’t know how many in the audience who laughed actually understood the reference but it was refreshing to see that Joe can relax and joke about those tumultuous events now. When the electric show began with “Dust Bowl” (always apt for an Oklahoma audience), I became rather alarmed because while I could see Joe’s lips moving, I couldn’t hear any words as his voice was being drowned out by the music. Thankfully, this situation was soon corrected and I was able to enjoy the rest of the show. And I really did enjoy it. In fact, I even worked up a sweat rocking back and forward in my seat! Joe didn’t hold anything back. His guitars were snarling and growling and wailing and screaming. How this guy can go out on stage night after night in city after city and put on such an energetic performance remains mind-boggling to me. There were many high moments but my favorite song in the electric set was one of the new ones, Oh Beautiful. I don’t know what the studio version of this is going to sound like but if Joe is accepting suggestions for what he should play at the Download Festival, my advice to him would be to play Oh Beautiful ... TWICE! The live version of this song absolutely kicks ****! By the way, call it coincidence if you will but I’m one for one re suggestions of songs that Joe should play (https://forum.jbonamassa.com/viewtopic. … 28#p269928), hee, hee!  Oh, before I forget, the “new” version of Sloe Gin sounded just fine to me. By now, I’ve listened to the hauntingly beautiful RAH rendition ad nauseum (the oft-overlooked studio version is wonderful too) and, even though I was afraid I wouldn’t like it at all, I actually enjoyed the brasher sound of the reworked version. During the shortened intro, I heard a guy behind me whisper to his friends, “This is Joe’s Stairway to Heaven”, but to me it’s now just another song in his extensive repertoire. If it was dropped altogether from the set, I probably wouldn’t miss it. The extended version of John Henry at the end of the show is absolutely killer and effectively showcases all the talent on stage. Finally, it was Mountain Time and perhaps the sound did become a little muddy on this one. However, this is probably more fitting for an encore than Just Got paid since it’s Joe’s own song and really has it all. In summary, this was one of the best Joe shows I’ve attended ... perhaps THE best! I wasn’t planning on doing so but after this performance, I might just have to drive up to Tulsa in November and do it all over again. Thanks, Joe.

Very nice review! It's making me more excited for the upcoming show i'm going to!!

Re: Oklahoma City, OK, 4/8/2014

Thanks for that fantastic review! Love your kids' responses they sound just like something my boys would say, lol!

Re: Oklahoma City, OK, 4/8/2014

Pretty funny exchange with the kids. My kids can't figure out my obsession with Joe and one even works for him. Glad you enjoyed the show. Now I had the opposite experience. Everywhere I looked was somebody I knew. It was a special night in Oklahoma and I never thought  I would see the day that Joe played the Peake. Monumental show and it rocked. Like I said in a Facebook post. Guitar porn G# rated.

Glad you had such a great time! Isn't it weird when you really love someone's music but it leaves other people cold? I recently played "I'd Rather Go Blind" to a friend, and his only reaction was to say "I'd rather go deaf!" Ho hum, can't win 'em all.

Actually I did. There was moments of doubt since it took 11 years to get there and although he was playing the Chesapeake home of the Thunder it was cut down in capacity to the size of our Civic Center. Joe would of rather played there but Broadway always wins in those rooms. I was concerned that people would not understand how intimate a setting the arena would be. There were more good seats available there than at the Civic Center. The sound issues were tamed by not having the entire room open.

I missed the first half of the acoustic set with some last minute issues but one I settled in the acoustic band was on fire. When Joe plugged in the minor tweaks made to the set by adding two new songs made the overall feel of the set much heavier and rocked hard with an edginess that many people felt he lost during the RAH 09 phase of his career. Since I have gotten to know so many of his local fans over the years and my friends and acquaintances have discovered him through me I got to here their immediate feedback. It was unfettered giddiness about the show and all proclaimed it as the best they had seen. Many of these people have been following Joe along time.

Having Joe give me a shout out from the stage was surreal as he just doesn't do things like that although last time in he told the story of his 30th Birthday and how in 2004 when he was forced to cancel a tour and Aubry Harris and I got together and helped him to get to Oklahoma and play our shows and a couple of shows in Texas. Aubry was in the crowd last Tuesday up from Ardmore where the legendary Two Frogs Grill is located and we got to reminisce a bit before the show it is just exciting to see Joe achieve what he has worked all these years for.

Seeing Joe comfortable and able to enjoy the fruits of his labor is what the Street Team was all about. We worked hard because we believed in him. I was an early Street Teamer that went beyond posters and calling the local radio stations. I wanted him to have a place to play in Oklahoma City. We moved around a lot over the years and although I never really thought Joe would be a comfortable fit in an arena Joe owned that room just like he has owned every room he has played in.

Thanks Pathman again for the great review and chiming in here. The Oklahoma City contingent of fans are not that vocal here if you take me out of the equation. Always great to hear reports by the loyal fans from my state.

Re: Oklahoma City, OK, 4/8/2014

Thanks for the positive feedback to my review, folks, much appreciated!

Jim, the next time Joe gives you a shout out you need to stand up and take a bow so I can come over and introduce myself to you. Really appreciate all your efforts in bringing Joe back to Oklahoma year after year. As far as the Chesapeake is concerned, I've seen Santana and AC/DC with a full arena set up in recent years (I think my ears are still buzzing after the latter) and having a good view of the stage can make all the difference. For Santana, we were off to the side somewhere up in the second tier and really couldn't appreciate the act itself although the sound was decent while for AC/DC we had floor seats and, but for the presence of security, could probably have reached out and touched Brian Johnson as he strutted up and down the catwalk. The tickets cost me an arm and a leg but you can probably guess which of the two shows I enjoyed more!

"I'd rather go deaf!" - lol

Re: Oklahoma City, OK, 4/8/2014

I just realized that everyone else seems to have a much larger avatar pic than my dinky little one of a few years ago so I just updated it and, yes, this is my image of Joe that I'll never improve upon! smile

Re: Oklahoma City, OK, 4/8/2014

Path man...Please tell me that is not Joe as a avatar because that person looks like they're covered in tattoos! LOL

Jim......your son works for him????? Wow. Cool.

I went to get my hair done recently and the salon always plays pop crap and someone asked me if I had a preference......duh, yah.

Well, unfortunately, Joe only lasted 2 songs. The girls thought it was too noisy. Oh Lordie. lol

Lol, I guess that does appear to be some serious body art! No, what you're looking at is Joe decked out in a pair of highly embroidered jeans which I seem to recall him mentioning very proudly at the time were Japanese. This photo was take at the Brady Theater in Tulsa three years ago. I had a front row seat touching the far right side of the stage which gave me a great angle from which to shoot.

Re: Oklahoma City, OK, 4/8/2014

Nice reviews!  Jim happy your belief in Joe has paid off. Joe seems at ease on any stage

I hate to say this but Joe seems to have an affinity for odd looking clothes sometimes........don't get me wrong, I love his sloppy offstage  look, but embroidered jeans? Uh......just saying lol

Re: Oklahoma City, OK, 4/8/2014

Hey Pathman
I was there that night also. I, too, thought Joe brought down the house that night, and it was my eighth time to see Joe since 2006. He was dressed like a million bucks also. Glad you have such a great memory because just reading your review reminded me of that night, each song. I was worried that playing at the Chesapeake they would have problems with the sound but not one bit where I was sitting (front row compliments of J&R for my lithograph purchase). Joe sounded as good as I have ever heard him. Just waiting for November 8th in Tulsa now, after Red Rocks!!

My only problem was the lights flashed in our eyes from his light show. They were aimed too low. But it was Joe so who cares!

Re: Oklahoma City, OK, 4/8/2014

You know, you say Joe was dressed like a million bucks but I couldn't for the life of me remember what he was wearing. I had to go back and look at the lousy out of focus cell phone pics I took to discover that he was clad in a light-colored suit. Congrats on the litho purchase!

Maybe I am prejudiced, but to me he looked fantastic that night. That pin or whatever he had pinning his shirt together was so classy looking, I thought.
Also, I did not see Jim's previous thread on this show. I need to look around, I guess.
Thanks for the congrats on my lithograph purchase. It was my first and I was not disappointed in the seats they provided. Nor the Meet and Greet where Joe gave me a hug for the gift I had for him. I am still walking on air.
Again, thanks for the great review of this great show. You left little to add.
