Topic: Lucy Zirins

WOT!!! No thread for Lucy? Right then, ‘bout time that was remedied…...

Over the last couple of years, Burnley’s Lucy Zirins has been getting herself noticed, and rightly so, even to the point of chasing Oli Brown for Best Young Artist awards.

Only been able to catch her once, and then it was the closing couple of songs of her set, last year at Doncaster Blues Festival, but that was enough to set the ears tingling enough to want to hear more. Well, that opportunity came last Saturday night, down at Hartlepool, where, after being thwarted once by venue closure, Tommy tried again and succeeded in booking Lucy to open for The Alligators.

Okay, on paper that is somewhat of a miss-match, The Alligators, bowing out, are a “meat an’ tatties” old school, R’n'B, garage-rock band, whereas Lucy’s acoustic stylings would seem too delicate; but, like any good menu, a classic starter refreshes the palate and stimulates the appetite, so it was with Lucy’s set; really got the ears working. True, most of the crowd were there for the main band, but at least Hartlepool won at home in the afternoon, but Lucy did have to cut through a “chatty” crowd, but managed to win a lot over with a cracking Tom Waits cover, and even got a bit sing-a-long going; and here’s me thinking only Ian Siegal can get away with Tom Waits….. That’s not to say Lucy’s own material isn’t worth listening to; she has that sort of bitter-sweet touch that puts me in mind of Ian Parker, as well as her Blues rootings but style that would work either with a light jazz backing or even celtic or bluegrass folk, not unlike Mary Chapin Carpenter, hell, even a touch country works; it would be a shame to try and fit Lucy into any particular box. I also like Lucy as she has her own voice, in that she not out to redo a Janis Joplin or Etta James; in fact, if Chantel is Stevie Nicks, than Lucy is Christine McVie.

Anyway, back to the set - what should have been the highlight of the set was marred by the sound gremlins, Lucy was set to do a couple of numbers on the Resonator, however, something was badly amiss with the microphone or pick-up. The first couple of rows probably got to hear what a great touch she has on the Res, but for us further back it was more acapella , but her voice did carry over the buzz of the audience. Obviously, it threw her a bit, but with a shrug and a “that’s rock an’ roll” which got the crowd back, Lucy rolled through a couple more songs off her album and got the crowd back in tune with a Stand By Me to close the set.

In all, totally justified my faith, and a ride out into the depth of Hartlepool and would recommend to anyone, if you get chance, go and check out Lucy; definitely one to watch.

"I think they call that "character building"...not an easy one at all. Thanks to everyone who bought CDs though and to lovely friends for travelling."....Lucy's quote on Facebook after the gig.

She is most definitely a very talented singer/guitarist. I would like to catch her live sometime. She has a live recording available to download for free (you can pay if you're feeling generous) on Bandcamp.

Re: Lucy Zirins

Yeah, it was a funny crowd, even for Hartlepool who are usually pretty good for new bands etc. Wouldn't say that they were "ugly" just inattentive; maybe they were all geared up for The Alligators - I know the place was packed out even when I arrived. Suppose it was a good thing too that Hartlepool won at home that Saturday.

Still, for those of us who did listen, Lucy was excellent, and in the face of adversity, a true professional and hope she comes by this way again, before too long.

Re: Lucy Zirins

Guisborough R'n'B Club - Nov 1st

Another chance to catch up with Lucy last Saturday, who came up to the more "genteel" setting of Guisborough as special guest to The Mentulls.

Result was, Lucy may have had "jelly-legs" walking on to the stage, but by the time came round that she walked off, she owned the place; the audience just hung on her every, sublime note. On first hearing Lucy, it's like having your hearing caressed, but then you realise, she's channelling stuff like Leadbelly and Willie Dixon, and make no mistake about it, while the even may feel a little "folkie", she knows her Blues and there's interesting things going on with her fingers, especially when she brings  "Tallulah" up on stage. Not only that, Lucy has a gteat personality that makes an easy connection with her audience and really sweeps you along, especially for a good old "sing-a-long"...at a Blues gig? Well, I won't tell the Blues police if you don't....

A Lucy Zirins' set is proof, as if it were needed, that you don't have to turn up to 11 and growl like a rabid bear to make some really good music happen.

Re: Lucy Zirins

Lately back at home, my listening music has been kind of relaxed and the other night I got round to thinking that I haven't heard much from Lucy for a while. Then, wouldn't you know it, a mail shot in my email announcing that Lucy had a Live CD on limited pre-sale prior to it's main release on Dec 18th.

Recorded back in May this year at Wigan's Old Courts, this is a lovely little "snapshot" of where our titian tressed singer is/was at, newly graduated. Backed by long-time friend Andy Crowdy on double bass this is a superb acoustic album mixing tracks from Lucy's acclaimed Chasing Clocks debut album; One Day Soon; Tearing me Down; Goodnight; Separate Ways; and her tasty What's In Front Of Me EP; What's In front of Me; Changing Ground; Mercy; Worry & Wine; You Won't Remember Me as well traditional cover Make Me Down A Pallet On Your Floor, John Hartford's In Tall Buildings and old closer, Leiber & Stoler's Stand By Me, interspersed with Lucy's comments between songs.

A pleasurable "snap-shot" of where post-college Lucy is, and hopefully a springboard to bigger things; maybe more Joni Mitchell than Leadbelly, even hints of Judy Collins, but still a major treat.

Also announced, Lucy will be back in Scotland with Dave Arcari for a special gig at Milton of Buchanan Memorial Hall on February 10th 2018. That's a "Beauty & The Beast" match-up if ever there was......
