Topic: Clapton album recommendations?

As the youngest of three boys, I spent a lot of my childhood listening to my brothers’ choice of music (only one record player in the house!) and quickly became a fan of Clapton’s early work  - Yardbirds/Mayall/Cream/Blind Faith/Derek and the Dominos.

461 Ocean Boulevard was the first album of his that I bought with my own money but I remember being really disappointed with it and sort of lost interest in him. That was 40 years ago and he's released a lot of  albums since then. Are there any  that stand out from the rest and really show off his incredible guitar talent and which I ought add to my collection??

In addition to having most of his early stuff, I have picked up the occasional other album over the years: Unplugged, Driving with the King and The Road to Escondido. What am I missing?? Any suggestions would be welcome.

Re: Clapton album recommendations?

John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers for older Clapton - it's incredible
24 Nights for new-ish Clapton (90s) - the album is great, but "Old Love" is the standout for me

ALL OF THE CREAM L/PS & THE EARLY YARD BIRDS STUFF

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

Re: Clapton album recommendations?

Clapton Winwood has my vote as well. Hadn't seen him playing better for years and he seemed to be enoying it much more also. big_smile

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)

+1

The Cream and Yardbirds stuff is the best IMHO.

Re: Clapton album recommendations?

Journeyman is a favorite for me. I saw him on that tour when I was just 5 years old!! From The Cradle is awesome as well.

Re: Clapton album recommendations?

I only like the Cream and Derek stuff. The rest just has no danger or drive...way too many late Sunday morning records from that guy.

Re: Clapton album recommendations?

I also recommend the Live In Hyde Park DVD. Some great songs & playing on that one!

Re: Clapton album recommendations?

I agree, but did like the self-titled solo from 1970 with Delaney and Bonnie. I fell off the bandwagon after that first solo release.

Re: Clapton album recommendations?

Thanks for all your suggestions. The impression I'm getting is that with the odd exception (Journeyman, for example), it is the live albums rather than the studio albums that he has released over the last 40 years that might stand some comparison with his earlier works.

This would suggest that he really built his stellar reputation 40-50 years ago and has been largely trading on that since, without really backing it up with a significant body of modern music of the same quality. Is that fair? Or am I being too hard??

I believe that is called hitting the nail on the head.

Re: Clapton album recommendations?

Some of his songs that sound bad on studio-cd´s, grow in the live-versions.
"YourFathers Eyes" for example - it´s with synties and computerdrums in the Cd-version, but live it is blues - somehow...

Sometimes he looks for new sounds, but live he´s Old Slowhand.

Another great studio-album is from the cradle, but even here the live-versions are much better (Hyde Park, Nothing but the Blues...)

Old Love is a great song, but the best version has been never released - its from Knebworth and has a few Stage-buzzes on it.
Maybe that´s the reason why it´s not on the Dvd/Cd-set - it was only in the radio...

Lucky I am, I recorded it smile smile smile !

When it comes to really playing guitar, for the most part, he leaves it to the live setting. IMHO, he has some great albums out there. I for one have a real fondness for Reptile, Slowhand, Unplugged, Money & Cigarettes, and even the self-titled release from a couple of years ago that Doyle Bramhall II produced. I think Eric catches a lot of crap because he doesn't play face-melting guitar solos on every song on every album. But they are good albums to me. I love the variety I can get from Eric Clapton. But that's just me. In my opinion, after Cream, he became more focused on making great albums and almost de-emphasizing the guitar in the album setting so he could escape the "guitar god" status and be looked at as a singer, songwriter, interpreter, AND guitar player. Unfortunately, ever since there's been people saying he doesn't have the fire that he used to have. Oh well. That's one opinion. There's still some scorching hot moments on most albums, but they're not every song. For instance, The Shape You're In off Money & Cigarettes contains some killer licks.

Re: Clapton album recommendations?

I'm fond of Just One Night for sentimental reasons, and the Unplugged album for other, different sentimental reasons. Anything live from the Cream/Blind Faith period is going to be awesome as well...
