Topic: Gary Clark Jr.

He was featured on My Planet Rocks on the Planet Rock channel earlier, and picked a few of his favorite songs. Here's what he chose:

Freddie King - Going Down
Buddy Miles - Them Changes
Howlin' Wolf - Shake For Me
Elmore James - Can't Stop Loving Me Baby
Led Zeppelin - Your Time Is Gonna Come
Albert King - Oh Pretty Woman
Otis Redding - Can't Turn You Lose

Nice to see a Zeppelin song other than Stairway To Heaven in someone'e list. The Albert King track is great as well.

Re: Gary Clark Jr.

I had the pleasure to watch his live stream from Mountain Jam yesterday as well as the stupendous closing set by Govt. Mule. Both bands were stellar! I also saw Eva and Ben right down front for Warren's set. smile

That's our spot, always. wink

Gary Clark Jr. was really good, I enjoyed his set a lot. We got the CD afterwards and there's some really good tracks on there as well as some songs that sound a little too much R'n'B to me...not that they're bad songs, it's just not my thing. But the live experience is definitely worth seeing!

Re: Gary Clark Jr.

Picked up his black and blu album in Starbucks last year on a whim after seeing him at Crossroads a few years ago.  Really solid album front to back a lot of different styles going on a true talent.  To my surprise my favorite song on the album was more a sung hip hop song than rock or blues.

Re: Gary Clark Jr.

Just noticed that Gary Clark Jr will be playing at the House of Blues in New Orleans the night before Joe's show at the Saenger Theatre. Since we'll be there, thought we might go check him out.

Natasha - be prepared to be blown away. Gary is something else.

Re: Gary Clark Jr.

Thanks for the info Kenny. It'll depend on how late our dinner with Phil's client goes, but it looks like Gary has an opening act so it should work out okay. Getting very excited about this little getaway!

Re: Gary Clark Jr.

I've gotten to see gary 3 times now, including right in front at mountain jam and last year at Hangout fest. And each time he's just blown my mind. His live show is incredible. Rippin' guitar, great vocals, killin band. its a great great show, some of the best new music out there in my opinion, especially the live show.
Ill probably get tickets to see him in NYC or Boston on his upcoming tour. great stuff!

Also thought the London Souls were awesome at mountain jam, kind of similar vibe to Gary, but they do their own thing too.
peace!

Have to agree Macca retire

Must see GC Jnr live asap

Re: Gary Clark Jr.

can't understand how GCJr can be over here in the UK playing a TV show and not be playing a few gigs?

Macca..... why the hair dye? Grow old gracefully, you are an icon, one of the greatest living artists - just getting a bit pitiful really.

Re: Gary Clark Jr.

I'm in the Philly area.  Just heard a commercial about GCJr opening for the Kings of Leon.  That should be a great opportunity to expand the awareness!

Re: Gary Clark Jr.

Had a great time seeing Gary Clark Jr at the House of Blues in New Orleans. He's really good. Dimly lit, smoky bar scene filled with 20-30 yr olds. Haven't experienced that in a long time. The dim lights and smoke kind of added to the mystique of the place. Able to procure a good spot upstairs at the rail. Would never have been able to see down on the floor. Crowd was really into it. Interesting mix of songs, some slow blues, sweet ballads and also loud bass driven pounding gritty dark songs. Videos were dark because of the dim lights, but here are some if you want to check them out.

Heading for Europe in May / June. Dates so far :

23 May - Maggazini Generali, Milan
28 May - Paradiso, Amsterdam
30 May - Ancieene Belgique, Brussels
4 June - Button Factory, Dublin

I would imagine he will play London. Hasn't played anywhere else in the UK yet.

Re: Gary Clark Jr.

Is this the guy who toured with the Stones on their last tour? Either that or maybe there's a Roy Cooper Jr? Not sure but I was told this other guy was great too. I laughed and said, but wait til you see Joe!

Yes he guested with the Stones. No need to laugh though - he is magnificent. Check you tube for Numb, Bright Lights, Big City & Hear my train a coming. If you can see him live do not hesitate. A breath of fresh air the way he approaches the genres.
