or.....never seen? That SRV-Jeff Beck tour in the late 80's, who opened for whom? I missed the show and kick myself to this day. At the time I sort of assumed that SRV opened. Anybody attend one of those shows?

I did. It probably should've been my answer to this post but I haven't been thinking clearly this past week.

Anyway, none of us were big Jeff Beck fans, so my peeps and I ventured to the show to see SRV for the first time. We had something like 17th row seats at the Milwaukee Auditorium which I think is said to be an acoustically perfect venue, but don't quote me on that. We were rendered speechless almost immediately after Stevie took the stage. Our eyes were fixed on him and every now and then we would look at each other and just shake our heads. After Beck finished his set I think Stevie came back out for a jam. We were also lucky to be present for Stevie's second-to-last performance at Alpine Valley.

LIVE MUSIC IS BEST

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

Two really stick out (not counting festivals):
Primus opening for Public Enemy & Anthrax.  Although I liked Anthrax & PE, I was really there to see Primus.
Skid Row opening for Guns & Roses - I was actually listening to a few tracks for Slave to the Grind today.  Great band, and that album in particular is awesome.  This was my first concert, so there's a bit of nostalgia at play.

Rory Gallagher opening for Foghat 1970's....I was a big Foghat fan back then,  but Rory blew them off the stage literally...

P/s I was also at the Fire meets the Fury tour (1989 )....Jeff Beck & SRV.....they both were great

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

A couple from 1975 when I was stationed in Germany. Don't remember the exact dates or locations tho. Don't ask me why.

Thin Lizzy opening for The Who
Mahavishnu Orchestra, then Ike & Tina Turner followed by Wishbone Ash
7/77- Oakland Coliseum- Rick Derringer & Judas Priest for Led Zep
Sometime in the 70's at Berkeley Univ.- Al DiMeola for Kenny Loggins

I think I may have hurt my brain trying to dredge those up.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush for Styx
Derek Trucks for Eric Johnson
Van Halen for Black Sabbath

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

Few more came to mind:-

'82 - Vandenberg opening for Michael Schenker
'82 - Budgie opening for Ozzy
'86 - Cheap Trick opening for Motley Crue (definitely should have been the other way round....)
'87 - Roy Harper opening for Barclay James Harvest
'87 - Tesla opening for Def Leppard (close call)
'90 - Thunder opening for Heart
'90 - Neville Brothers opening for Tina Turner
'90 - Dirty White Boy opening for Magnum (always a sucker for Earl Slick)

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

That brings back some memories Mike. Was at all but 2 of those you listed (Cheap Trick & Neville Bros). All others were in Edinburgh.

How about Iron Maiden for Judas Priest.
Bon Jovi for Kiss.
Paul Rodgers for Status Quo

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

We must have dodged round each other a few times in the past, Kenny.

Never got to the shows myself, but how about Aynsley Lister opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd as well as ZZ Top.......

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

Bands I saw as little known or early-in-career supports who later kicked on:
1. Supporting heyday Aussie pub-rock band The Angels (Angel City in USA) in my local, 1980 - INXS
2. Supporting ex-Easybeats Stevie Wright at a free radio station show at a park in Sydney, 1974 - AC/DC

Mightily impressive bands I'd never heard of when I saw them as a support (but who mightn't be big yet):
1. First of three bands opening for the Foo Fighters, Sydney Football Stadium, December 2011 - Stonefield
2. Supporting Stonefield April 2012, Primal Scream December 2012 and Deap Vally June 2013 - The Delta Riggs
