Topic: Best support act you've ever seen?

For me there are two that stick in my mind from years back - Terence Trent D'Arby opening for Simply Red and Graham Parker & the Rumour supporting Thin Lizzy. The only supports I've ever seen when no-one wandered out to buy beer and everyone screamed for more! Quality acts.

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

Always a fun question! Lots of people lower down the list at festivals but guess those don't count. Also guess buddy guy opening for Jeff beck doesn't really count as a support! Eddie and the hot rods blew nine below zero away.

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

Pete Shoulder's old band Winterville (before the Union) supporting Thin Lizzy. Amazing sound and I knew he had something special.
Glyder opening for someone...can't remember who...they were a rocking band in the spirit of Thin Lizzy...shame they're not around any more.

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

Savoy Brown opening for Grand Funk Railroad
I could go on and on because back in the 70's there seemed to be so many tours with great support. Freddie King opening for Steve Miller, Little Feat opening for Steve Miller and then you fast forward to the early 2000's and Joe opens for Thorogood, Frampton, BB King. It is the norm nowdays to not bother with the openers. Usually a band that will play for nothing or somebody owes somebody a favor.

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

We saw Kim Simmonds/Savoy Brown a few weeks ago and they were great. The new album is a throwback to the early years. Savoy Brown was almost the house band at the Fillmore East...they weren't support for long!

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

2/9/1977 Boston Garden- Thin Lizzy supporting Queen

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

Joe and KWS opening for BB King
Black Crowes opening for ZZ Top
Alice In Chains opening for Van Halen

Re: Best support act you've ever seen?

First time Guns 'n' Roses played the UK, and visited Newcastle City Hall, for me the were blown off the stage by support Faster Pussycat.

I can also remember some poodle-noodle band from New Jersey opening for KISS about 30 years ago - anyone know what happened to Bon Jovi?

Lately, my ears were singed by a searing young guitarist and his band when they opened for Oli Brown a few years ago,and more recently, the likes of Wilko, Uriah Heep & MSG; Virgil & The Accelerators And more recently, some young scallywags from Guisborough are making some sweet tones after opening for the likes of Virgil, Oli, Aynsley, Nimmo Bros et al, and proving their worth as headliners - The Mentulls.
