Topic: Jonny Lang

Good morning,

Debbie wants to see Jonny at the Filmore. We were going to see him a couple of years ago, saw that it was an acoustic set, I want to see him plugged in. Anyways, what is he doing at his shows? Is it only R and B, he has changed so much from his first album.

Re: Jonny Lang

I caught him in Reno about 6 months ago and he was excellent. Performed a lot of his old stuff as well as some new stuff. I was impressed, and look forward to seeing him again. "Quitters never win" was a highlight...

Oh...and it was all electric

Re: Jonny Lang

Shred, Glad to hear Stu saw him and it was good. I saw him last year at Tampa. He did have to follow Robben Ford, but I didn't get any WOW moments like I had in the past. He just seemed more mellow. Heard he is married and very into the church. Glad he has personal happiness. I just miss the "rawness" he had in the past. Just my opinion, and again, it's been 1yr for me so Stu's seen him since......Cathy

Re: Jonny Lang

I also miss the "old" Jonny Lang - saw him twice last summer and too much religion and save the world stuff for me - he's lost his intensity - I was very disappointed in his new stuff.

Momma gets what momma wants, that way shred gets to go giggin on a moments notice! (LOL). Jonny's a snoozer, thats allright, I"ll bring a Ipod with Joe playing, she will never know.

I think she called me by his name the other night, she has it bad for the young buck! (LOL)

I'm fired up big time for Reno, hope my shirt gets here in time. If not, my "you and me" will do fine. I got the first hook! Hope your buddy Matt can hang. My brother Gary is real cool, hope you get the chance to jaw with him. I cant believe we came from the same parents.

Re: Jonny Lang

Just saw Jonny yesterday(5/26) at a free show downtown, and my impression is that when he's good, he's really good, but there were several moments which left me somewhat cold. It doesn't seem that he's reconciled his older sound with the new, as there was a big disparity between the two in his show. When he was playing the more hard edged material of his earlier work he still delivers the goods, such as the stellar cover of Tinsley Ellis' "A Quitter Never Wins". However, his newer material, while competently done lacks the intensity, and comes off rather flat in comparison. Lang is still an excellent guitarist but one who needs to find a way to bridge the two successfully, as there seems to be a conflict between the two. The band was extremely tight, but as a live show he pales in comparison to Joe or Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Playing for approximately an hour and forty minutes(including encore) he would build to a height but then lose the momentum.

If you're looking for the smoking blues that brought him to fame initially, it's still there, but be prepared for some moments which likely will leave you looking at your watch, at least until the next batch of hot guitar work. The best moments not surprisingly were from his first two albums, the aforementioned "A Quitter Never Wins," opening song "Wander This World" and closer "Lie To Me," as well as a hard funk version of Stevie Wonder's "Living For The City".

All in all, a decent show, albeit one which could use better pacing, and a set list which favors material where Lang, to paraphrase Frank Zappa, just "shuts up and plays his guitar".

Re: Jonny Lang

It's been awhile since I first heard Joe open for Jonny Lang in July '02 at the Mountain Winery, but last night was a great show at (mini) Moe's in Santa Cruz.  Small venues rock.

Another highlight o' the night was meeting Shred and J'Dawg - you twin brothers of different muthers made it a special time....Thanks!

Re: Jonny Lang

I am with Stu in that I found him (find him) excellent.  I do love to engage & shake body parts (concert or recording), but sometimes just the ears, brain,  complex sound waves (amplified or not) with or without poetically inclined and / or inspirational lyrics (whether comprehendable or not), and breathing work together on me to put me in "the moment".  Jonny can do this without great fanfare or "excitement" sometimes.  Regardless, I find his emotion and "verve" quite compelling.  And if he cranks the handle clockwise...you better you better you bet, you better bet your life he's got some more in store.  My personal opinion, despite many accolades, I still consider him underated!

Re: Jonny Lang

Shred - I used to feel the same as Debby about Jonny Lang.  However he has changed,
which I realize he has every right to do!, but no more shows for me.  We saw him last
summer with about 6 others and every one of us felt the same - like we "lost" one of
our favorite artists.

Re: Jonny Lang

I hope not, but maybe it's going to be a self-fulfilling prophecy you'll "lose" another favorite artist in Joe Bonamassa if he takes a World Music left turn at Albuquerque, I mean Ahmadabad, India (or wherever)?!

Re: Jonny Lang

From all of the interviews I've read featuring Jonny, my take is that he is finally following his heart.  Being a musician myself I have absolute respect for that.  I continue to support his music.
