Topic: PAF Solutions?

Hi all,

I'm finding my current tone with my Gibson CS JBLP #164 with BB2 and BB3 pickups to be a little on the dark and hot side, been looking at some more vintage accurate pickup solutions and particularly Seymour Duncan as they've consistently proven to me that they make a great product.

I was thinking about either going with the Joe Bonamassa SD set or the SD Antiquity set (I really love the Antiquity range).... Buying a set of Antiquities will be much kinder on the wallet, but I'm not sure whether they'll get me into a similar tonal ballpark (more twang and chime and less output) as the JB pickups.

Any other suggestions are very much welcomed!

Cheers,

All of the best from Aus,

Stefan!

PAFs are fairly easy to find. And lots of options. So not any hotter than 8K?

I have them, just love the tone.
Cheap does not mean bad...

Edit: sorry not PAF

Women, whiskey and miles of travelin' is all I understand

Re: PAF Solutions?

Best I have used so far is a Lindy Fralin Pure PAF.  Lindy himself can be very difficult to deal with, but his techs are good.  Unfortunately, they are pricey.  I think I gave $130 for just a bridge pickup.

Be sure to know what their return agreement is before buying.

Re: PAF Solutions?

Just chiming in with my own personal experience - better than Bare Knuckle Mules for true PAF sound - speak to Mark Stow at OX4 pickups. UK based though...so could be pricey ship.

Or try Arcane with their Triple Clones.

There are MANY out there. Nothing wrong with the SDs you're looking at, Mr Hauk.

Re: PAF Solutions?

All good suggestions so far. Lots of good pickups out there. Just a thought here, the BB2 and 3 you have are very good. I have them in my Rossington Les Paul but I installed a upgraded wiring harness. The pots and caps that Gibson puts in their Guitars are not the best. I'm not saying they are all bad but I think some are better then others. Something to think about.

Re: PAF Solutions?

I've had DGT pups for a couple years, but have never really bonded with them.  They're copied after David Grissom's 335 PAFs.   I'm starting to think maybe I'm just not a humbucker guy...  but am going to buy another set to try, and have decided on the Whole Lotta Humbuckers.  I figure, if the DGTs and WLHs don't bond with me, nothing will.

I was going to try BBs, but when I heard "bright" in the descriptions, I backed off.  I'd love to try a set of the JB Sig ones tho.

Re: PAF Solutions?

I've recently had a Les Paul Replica built with Wizz Premium PAF's installed. Loving the sound so much that my set of JB signature Duncans still sit in their box although that I want to keep them for another guitar may have something to do with it...

Here is a demo I found if anyone is interested in hearing them?

Re: PAF Solutions?

What are you using setting wise on your amp? I have a set of Wizz pickups in my Korina Explorer going into my Vintage 65 Princeton Reverb.. I can't seem to dial in a good tone

Re: PAF Solutions?

You also may want to investigate a new pre-wired wiring harness before changing pickups. I have a LP standard plus & got a new harness. It really brought out the tone I was after; made a big difference!
