Topic: Canada Rocks - Rush!!!

Just saw the great Canadian band, Rush, last night.  First time seeing them play live and it was a great show to say the least.  I have never been a huge Rush fan but have always liked them however that changed last night.  They are all excellent musicans.

Neil Peart is an absolutely amazing drummer.   I would like to know what Bogie thinks of him.  His drum kit is very impressive and he plays everything that is set up.  I counted at 15 different drum heads.

They played for over 2 1/2 hours here in Charlotte.  They played a good mix of old and new.  The new album Snakes and Arrows has some great songs on it too.
If they come around your area you might want to check them out.

I have seen them twice once in the early eighties and in the late 90's. they are great musicians.pert has always been on the top of the lists for best drummers in music mags.oiutside of thier popular stuff back in the 70's and eighties, the cd counterparts is one I still listen to often.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Rush. It's a pity you have missed so many great years but it's never too late to join the club. I have been following these guys since I first saw them in Glasgow in 1977. This is my R30 year. I am taking my wife to see them for her first time next week. I am then going to Milan. Italy with some mates to see them later in the month.

I cannae wait as it will be magic.

Peace and jam

Millhouse,
Thought you might be interested, Rush uses Budda amps on their new record!

Re: Canada Rocks - Rush!!!

They came to Sactown a month ago, I missed them this time, but my buddies gave me a quick review. 3 hours 20 minutes with a short 15 min. break at the 2 hour mark, Neil then comes out and kills a 20 minute solo and brought the house down!! People either love em or hate em, I personally dont like seeing them in a amphitheater with 20,000, unless i have great seats.

Hi Ken

Yeh I saw a short video of Alex Lifeson on You tube under Budda. I had also read an interview in Guitar One magazine in which he talked about the new album and his gear. He was using Hughes and Kettner amps on stage but has tried a few others including the Budda. The annoying thing is these guys are most probably given the amps by these companies to push their name! Mere mortals like me have to save our pennies to get one.

Cheers

Sounds like a great time.

I was fortunate to see them in 1977, playing with 38 Special as opener.
AMAZING!

It was like seeing the light, and passing thru it when 2112 was thundering thru my head.
OK, we did have a large number of pops B4, during and after the show, so details are kind of scattered.

I could sing Getty pretty good after a few to clear out the cobwebs..

Pick up The Worlds a Stage Live if you can find it. I think I wore out the vinyl. Very tasty indeed.

Re: Canada Rocks - Rush!!!

AH Yes, The great Rush. As For Neil Peart, he's great, period. He has done more for drumming in the last twenty to thirty years than anyone. He has influenced everyone currently playing, whether they know it or not. When I was teaching, some of my students would bring in current bands to listen to and learn their songs. I would always, as I do personally, see where those drummers influences were. Some were influenced by Stewart Copeland, some by John Bonham, some by Carter Beauford. But there was always one lick or something in the song that was influenced by the Neil Peart Factor. He has been and still is killing it for his entire career. I lost interest in that style of music a while ago and in that style of drumming to a degree for a while. I went through my Neil phase. For me it was 2112, A Farewell To Kings, Moving Pictures, and Hemispheres. I cut my teeth on those in High School. Then I discovered Zeppelin and I found the sound and feel I really gravitated towards. When I joined Joe and we discussed doing a drum solo, I of course went to the woodshed and listened to a lot of my favorite solos. Neil's solos on All The World's A Stage and Exit Stage Left are mind blowing. I think that Neil treats his solos as performances rather than artistic expressions that change from night to night. I 'm somewhere in between, but I would not be the soloist, drummer or musician that I am today without Neil.

Re: Canada Rocks - Rush!!!

Millhouse,
You're correct, Alex will probably stick to the H&K amps for the tour. But the producer (Nick Raskulinecz) of the album is a big Budda guy. He pushes the budda amps on everyone he produces, and says the budda can be heard all over Rush's latest record.

I've probably seen Rush 6 or 7 times throughout their career starting with the Permanent Waves tour. At that time they were still performing 2112 live almost all the way through, and it sounded amazing.

They're probably the only band that I've seen live where I don't focus more on the guitar player. I'm always watching Geddy and Neil probably more than Alex, just because the both of them are doing so many great things at the same time! I'm always amazed when I watch Geddy singing, playing intricate bass lines, and hitting the pedals with his feet, and never screwing up any of it! Usually when people sing and play an instrument, they keep the instrument part simple while they are singing, but not Geddy. And Neil is always fun to watch throwing his drum sticks high up in the air, and always coming down right on time! As well as playing amazing drum lines and off beats throughout all of their songs.

Also a big fan of the early stuff (Fairwell to Kings, Hemispheres, 2112, Permanent Waves and Moving pictures). Back when Geddy was singing high enough where only dogs could hear him.

I read about when they were getting ready to record their next studio album, and the record company told them this was their last chance before they were dropped. Their records weren't selling good enough and the record company wanted them to tone it down with the heavy stuff, and get Geddy to start singing lower to come up with something a little more commercial.
They said f*** it, and recorded 2112! Their heaviest, album to date...which turned their career around.

Ken you are a man after my own heart. Old school Rush always does it for me.Caress of Steel is a fantastic album. I don't need to say anything about their finest hour 2112. Kings,Pictures and now they have released an album which I think is a return to form. Nick has made a fantastic job of the production and the guys...... well they just get better with age, like a fine wine.  I have had the honour of meeting with them a good few years ago(before Neil mellowed) Geddy and Alex were great but Neil seemed a little awkward and didn't want to be there. It didn't stop me following them since first seeing them live and like you I watch Neil and Geddy more live.  Ihave only 4 days to go before seeing them live again in Glasgow. It will be magic!

Cheers and don't stop rambling

Re: Canada Rocks - Rush!!!

Well what can I say. Absolutely magnificent show from Rush at the SECC in Glasgow last night. Lots of songs that I haven't heard live and a good helping from the new album all nailed perfectly. To make it the perfect evening I caught one of the t-shirts that Alex threw into the crowd! I was five rows from the stage on his side and got a real appreciation of his talent. What  a band!

Rush - I have seen them four times, closest was third row right in the middle. It is hard to understand the tallent with in those three Men. Neal has been a Poster child for all drummers and he has been Moderen Drummer a number of times, in the drummer hall of fame. Snakes and Arrows is a very good Listen. Bar None Rush has to be one of the top Bands of all time..

Well said old boy!
