Topic: Smokin Joe at Birmingham AL!!!

Thought there would be see some comments posted by now. Looks like Joe was even too smokin for the fire system!!

From Twitter "Well there is a first time for everything! Full evacuation in the middle of the gig for a fire alarm. Great crowd though thank u Birmingham!"

Re: Smokin Joe at Birmingham AL!!!

I drove down from the Nashville area last night. Besides the fire alarm mid-set it was truly a bazaar night. The Eagles were also playing at the same BJCC complex at the same time. Traffic and parking was a nightmare($20/parking). Regretfully I have to say I was disappointed last night. This was my 6th JB concert and this was the worst I have heard him sound. The acoustic set was fine but his electric show was not up to previous concerts. The guitars just "sing" as they usually do. At times they sounded fuzzy and flat, just did not have that trademark JB haunting, penetrating and soaring tone. I was also disappointed in the play of Derek Sherinian. Very heavy. Seemed to clutter up the songs. Derek is obviously a talented and accomplished musician but I much prefer Rick's simple clean and supportive style especially on the B3. Derek's heavy keyboard work seems to clutter up the songs. Not to be completely negative, Joe's vocals were the best I've heard from him. Clear, strong and great phrasing. He has really gotten better and I have always liked his singing style. Tal was terrific. Truly a master drummer. He now sits high atop a platform center stage. You can really watch him play. Carmine was terrific also. Truly a musician's musician. Back to the negative. I did not care for Joe's new versions of Sloe Gin and Midnight Blues. The haunting intro of Midnight Blues was changed and Sloe Gin's intro of Rick's keyboard and Joe's penetrating guitar was different as well. I much prefer Joe's RAH version of Sloe Gin and the Beacon Theatre's Midnight Blues. All in all it was still worth the 360 mile trip (Did not get home until 2:00AM). A not as great sounding JB is still worth the experience. I have tickets for JB's show at the Ryman in April. The Ryman can be a tough venue to dial in a great sound. I sure hope Joe gets it right. I am interested in hearing from other fellow attendees last night. Was it just me?

Re: Smokin Joe at Birmingham AL!!!

My wife and I drove over from Atlanta last night, and will be at the Fox Theater in Atlanta Friday night.  This was my 12th show since 2009.  We booked a room at the Embassy Suites, took the shuttle to the venue and faced no nightmares once we got there.  The fire alarm was definitely a shock.  However, if you remember, he was about half way through Midnight Blues when it happened.  We came back, and he poured it out again with different licks as only Joe can do, since he plays by feel.  I thought he actually stepped it up to make up for the fans aggravation at having to leave the building, even though he had no control over the situation.  Any time I can get more of Joe than planned, the aggravation was worth it.  Our seats were right center orchestra, row E.  I thought the sound and performance were definitely up to JB standards.  We were pleased.  I really liked the setlist, though always want to hear Blues Deluxe and Just Got Paid.  Sorry you were disappointed, but I believe you were probably the only one.

Re: Smokin Joe at Birmingham AL!!!

Thanks for sharing.   Curious what actually happened. Did the fire alarms sound loudly?  Or did they make an announcement?
I think the sound at a Joe concert really depends on your seats.

Re: Smokin Joe at Birmingham AL!!!

The power was cut to the instruments all while the fire alarm lights were flashing.  The ushers had no idea what to do and obviously Joe was in disbelief.  After a minute or so he announced they would be taking another break to figure out what was going on.  At that moment, my wife and I exited while others stood there and wondered what to do.  I just am not about taking any chances.  From what Joe announced when he came back, and I am not sure if he made this up, someone was cooking hot dogs somewhere in the convention center and burned them, setting off the fire alarms.  All I knew was when my wife and I exited to the outside, the Segway Police were in a fury.  I am not sure if the Arena, which is all attached to the same complex, had to be evacuated.  That is where the Eagles were playing as well.

Re: Smokin Joe at Birmingham AL!!!

welcome to the forum gbarr and jglen, good to have you and thanks for the reviews. I live just south of Birmingham and have declined to attend the last 2 times at the Civic Center. The main reason is the sound quality. You guys were in the concert hall, which has a little better sound than the main hall. I saw Al Di Meola there many years ago, it was OK, but my hearing is not what it used to be. Why they would have both of them on the same night is beyond me, I feel your traffic and parking pain gbarr. After seeing him in state of the art concert halls I won't compromise. There has been a lot of discussion here about sound in different venues, all the way down to where you were sitting. Looks to me like jglen had the right seats on this one. It seems the closer you are, or being up front on the floor, the better the sound is. I'm guessing gbarr's seats were further back.
That being said, the whole Joe experience is still very much worth the price of admission, and parking. Very glad you both enjoyed it, we already knew that Joe is smoking hot but I believe this is a first for him setting off a fire alarm, sounds about right. Hang around and enjoy the topics, a great Bonafamily is here for you.

Oh, somebody made up that burned hot dog story, we all know it was Joe. lol

I was sitting on the 5th row. Best seats that I have had so far. I saw Joe in this same venue 2 years ago and he sounded great. I believe I had 6 or 7th row seats then. It could have been the different gear he was using. Maybe this amp configuration was doubling for the split/acoustic set. I was not being critical of him. I am familiar with the guitars and amps he uses and this rig just did not sound as good. I know how important tone is to Joe and how much effort he puts into attaining his sound. I was a little critical of Derek. I just think his style is too heavy for Joe's music. All that being said, I would hop in my car and drive back down there tonight to here him again. I am as devoted as you can be and still hold a job. I have literally listened to no one else since 2009.

Re: Smokin Joe at Birmingham AL!!!

well, I was wrong in assuming you were further towards the back. Those sound like great seats. So you just never know with all that high powered equipment. You may have been getting some of that "white noise" off the back of the hall. I saw Zeppelin in the arena in 1978 and the sound was atrocious, but you were in the concert hall. It's quite all right to offer constructive criticism here, your take on it is fine, I assure you nobody is going to bite your head off. I hope the next one goes better.

Re: Smokin Joe at Birmingham AL!!!

This was my first Bonamassa show, but long time fan. My wife and I had tickets for his last show in Birmingham, a few years ago. But were unable to attend last minute. All in all, it was a great show. The acoustic set was exceptional, and the band was in fine form. A few hurdles in the show, but I think he put on a great show regardless. As a professional guitarist myself, it is truly inspiring to see someone play at that level. My only complaint is that up until the fire alarm he seemed to be really getting into the show and inspired. But after, never seemed to cut lose. He was very good, but his playing seemed like it was way to easy and safe, as if he wasn't even trying. I prefer to see musicians push themselves a bit more. But under the circumstances (fire alarm, impending hot dog doom!) I can relate how it's hard to make that happen when thrown a curve ball. All in all great show and will look forward to seeing him again.

Re: Smokin Joe at Birmingham AL!!!

The Eagles added the BJCC Arena "last minute" to their tour schedule.  Joe even joked he would never be so bold as to intentionally schedule a show in the same town, let alone the same venue, on the same night as one of the most iconic bands in music history.  The Eagles, on the other hand, JackA$$es they are, didn't give two flips.  I was happier seeing Joe.  Funny story, I wondered why hotel rooms were hard to come by close to the venue as I had no problem there two years ago.  I had NO idea the Eagles were playing same night.  We checked into the Embassy and I asked the receptionist if the shuttle van went to the BJCC.  She said yes, you must be here for the big concert.  I said, "yes", smiling because Joe was so popular.  We got on the shuttle bus and 14 or so people started talking about the Eagles and how excited they were to see the show.  I thought they were joking.  When the conversation never did switch to JB, I said "are you really going to the BJCC to see the Eagles"?  Answer  "Yes!"  "Well, I am going to see Joe Bonamassa".  "Who is that"?  My reply, "If Jimmie Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton had sex with the same woman, this kid would have popped out!"  Hopefully they now know who he is.

Thanks for the Welcome to the Forum!

Re: Smokin Joe at Birmingham AL!!!

Yes, we had a similar experience before seeing the show.  We had decided in Aug. to go and promptly made reservations at a B&B near 5 Points for a 3 day Blues & Brews trip.  Our son also lives in B'ham so we really made an event out of it.  Everyone at the breakfast table was talking about going to "the concert" at the BJCC and maybe getting a cab so they wouldn't have to worry about parking.  Finally, the whole Eagles thing was revealed and we got the traditional, that we were seeing" who"? Breakfast after the concert included them talking like it was a huge sports event and a woman having to be taken out by an ambulance and all the general crazyness of the it.  We raved about Joe, talked about the fire alarm and by the end of breakfast I had everyone "Googling" Joe.

We look forward to next November and curious what city he'll do in AL....really wish he would do the Saengar Theater in Mobile sometime.

Cheers,
Sharon
