Re: Oakland Baby!!

Some bad news....sorta. Seems my best bud that was going to the show with me has come down with the flu and is unlikely to make the show. Therefore I have an extra ticket if anyone knows someone who'd like to take his place. No charge! Gratis! Free! The only caveat is if he suddenly decides he feels well enough to go. I won't know for sure till about noon. E-mail me at trout4guy@gmail.com and I'll give my phone # to set up a meet.

Thanks,
Guy

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Oakland Baby!!

Headed up the freeway in San Diego's North county yesterday driving the conspicuously marked Bonacruiser on the way to the concert today and an old beater beemer that had been tailgating me finally gets a break and pulls up to pass. The guy gets level and then slows to pace me so I look over. He's giving me the giant grin and thumbs up, then reaches down and holds up..... a little red pick.
We'll see you all this evening.

Patiently waiting to board my flight from SEA to OAK. Safe travels everyone! Brrrrr

Rick I love the red pick story!

Re: Oakland Baby!!

Squared away at the Courtyard Marriott and working on a plan for dining and refreshments.  Luka's is booked solid so my friends from Pleasanton are trying to figure out some other options.....   Will be a great show regardless!

Re: Oakland Baby!!

There is a bar at the Marriott, 1001 Broadway. Just an idea. If anybody finds a better place closer to the venue, please post!

Re: Oakland Baby!!

I just booked into the Marriott. Meeting at the bar sounds good to me. I'll go down there till about 6:30. Hope to see y'all!

Oh yeah..........still have one ticket available for anyone can make it.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Oakland Baby!!

Groovy, Helen and I missed you all. We got out of the meet and poked our noses into where we thought you might be. We ended up at that new age sushi place. Really good! Show was off the hook. Pouring cats dogs, chickens and all when we got out so we ran for dry.

Re: Oakland Baby!!

Absolutely awesome show last night! It seems every time I try to meet up with fellow Bonabuds, it always comes to naught. I also missed everyone but had a great time all the same. Even tho' I was flying solo last night, I would do it again in a minute. We'll try to meet up next time.

Did you eat at Ozumo? If so, good call. Been there a couple times, excellent experience both times. The best spot in that neighborhood is Pican, on the other corner up the street.

Re: Oakland Baby!!

What a GREAT show last night.

The guys who opened the show absolutely KILLED IT with a mesmerizing acoustic set. Haha

JB and crew (plugged in) we're  awesome, as usual. Killer stage set, killer sound.

Sloe Gin was my fav. The guitar tone during that song was the best.....for my ears. Loved the keys being a little more in the spotlight. As I believe someone else wrote, the show has a little Deep Purple feel at times with Derek.

Re: Oakland Baby!!

I agree, the opening band was KILLER!

I think we're seeing an evolution with Joe.  The acoustic set was great, but the new arrangements of some of the plugged in tunes was pretty awesome.  John Henry was mesmerizing.  Parts of the show were hypnotic last night.  I heard tones of Jeff Beck as well.  Someone near me mentioned he heard tones of Duane Allman.  All of it was great Joe.  Such clean tone and the bands are so tight.

Great show.

Re: Oakland Baby!!

Sorry for the later review, I was off the grid for a couple days. That’s what happens when you visit family in the Sonoma area smile.

My day started at 5am, crispy cold Seattle. A friend picked me up at the Oakland airport at noon. Since we had time to kill, we drove over the bridge to San Francisco. Tooled around, looked at some stuff, Fisherman’s wharf, there’s a mechanical museum down there we had to go to, as my friend is a pinball enthusiast. Drove up the hill, had a looksee at Grace Cathedral (go if you ever get the chance, it takes up an entire block) and then back to Oakland. Got a nice pic of the marquee and then we were one of the first few in when the doors opened. Theater is so beautiful inside. We got a couple drinks and made our way to the seats. Row O close to the center aisle. Hey, it’s not orchestra pit but we had a great view.

It was fun to see the disbelief on my friends face as she was watching the show. She had heard of Joe but was not familiar with any of the music. She plays guitar too. During Woke Up Dreaming she said, “Holy Sh*t! On an acoustic!?!”

Loved loved loved the acoustic set. Having the guys up there added great texture to the songs, like a Celidh jam, but took nothing away from Joe. Every single song was special.

Cut to electric set - Midnight Blues (oh the tone!), Dislocated Boy, just when you think it couldn’t possibly get any better, it does! And Joe’s voice was perfect and dead on. Slow Train -It looked like something was wrong with the Bona-byrd. It was switched out seamlessly, mid-song. Within nano-seconds Mike brought out the Firebird. Joe plugged it in, played a chord or two, adjusted the volume and then went into a face-blistering solo. John Henry! Mountain Time!

Another great thing about this show was the crowd. I don’t know how it compares to other shows from Joe and the guys’ perspective, but what a bunch of happy, excited, big Standing O for each song type of crowd. I loved it. Yes, each song deserved a standing ovation. Seattle could learn something from this crowd. Either that or I just got stuck in a group of fuddy-dudds last time. Anyway -young, old, and all of us in between were so happy to be there and you could just feel it.

Also, I’d just like to add that Derek is a terrific addition. I loved his playing, thought it sounded great. Not to take anything away from the previous guys. They were great too, but I really thought Derek sounded wonderful.

The show was killer. Fan-friggin’-tastic. When can I go to another?

Didn't make it over to Sonoma itself this time, I was just a bit West. Petaluma/Penngrove/Cotati/Rohnert Park.

Nobody usually knows what I'm talking about, so I say Sonoma. Great town, though.

Re: Oakland Baby!!

We Spring Mountain hopped yesterday between Napa and Sonoma. Gorgeous drive on that twisty road. Saw the place the Bear Flag was first hoisted. Neatoh.

I have to say that the crowd at the Oakland show was one of the best I've ever been part of. Respectful and full of energy with a ton of standing ovations between songs. Joe has sure kicked it up a notch. That was the total refinement of the RAH show of Tour de Force. A bit different set list but the bands were so much tighter and Joe opening for Joe is just perfection. On to Santa Barbara.
Please sir, may I have another?

Re: Oakland Baby!!

Have to agree with the prior posts - a really solid, tight, high energy show from Joe and the band(s).   The long acoustic opening set was fabulous - Laurie's favorite part - and the electric set just as satisfying.    I especially liked Gerry and Mats coming out for Mountain Time, their playing (and a bit of stylistic rework by Joe) helped re-invigorate a favorite song of mine, which had seemed to be getting a little threadbare in the last few concerts.

My only negative - and Laurie shared this - was that at least where we were, up in the balcony near center, on many songs the bass and drums were just a little too loud and drowned out Joe's guitar and vocals.   I know loud is good, but..... there is such a thing as too much.

The Paramount was absolutely gorgeous, if art deco is your thing you will feel like you died and went to heaven.   And, as others have posted, an appreciative crowd with lots of enthusiasm but also respect (i.e., quiet when they needed to be).   The only negative was the massive downpour after the show - felt like we were back in Seattle!

Sorry we did not get to connect with KatClark or others; Luka's was booked solid, so we ended up having some beers & snacks at Pacific Coast Brewing and then taking BART the short ride from 12th to 19th for the show.   Then, on Saturday, breakfast at the Cock a Doodle Cafe (very good), an easy BART ride to Oakland Airport, and an easy Alaska flight home that afternoon.   Between the train trip down, the fabulous show, and easy flight back, it was really a great getaway weekend.  And Old Downtown Oakland (despite being a little sketchy at night) was interesting and had some neat architecture and things to see.  I think all marriages would benefit from a little Joe concert expedition like that every now and then! big_smile

Now, just have to watch the days pass until Yakima on 3/27....  smile
