Topic: I First Heard Beth and Joe right after Seizures

In April 2013 I had seizures for the first time at the age of 62. I was in a neurology unit for three days. Before the seizures I had only vaguely heard of Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa.

Sometime shortly after getting out of the hospital I heard their song "I Will Take Care of You" - and it made me cry. I am over sixty and I cried a river! At that moment I felt completely lost. My life was unexpectedly turned upside down.

You lose you driver's license after seizures and my brain was felt fried. I did not know if I could ever work or give a good presentation again. Seizures are like a electrical storm in your brain and anything can be wiped out. Without memories we lose connection to our own past. It's like losing part of your soul. Scary.

But, their song, "I Will Take Care Of You, was the start of my turnaround. Since April I have bought almost everything that either Joe and Beth have produced (and eagerly await a full DVD) Seriously, I have all of Joe's DVDs and most of his cds!

Their music and their personalities have been important to me in recovering from the seizures. They both play classic music in a new, fresh way. Listening to their music has helped my brain recover and regrow connections. Even the high quality production of the music has helped me as my ears hear sharper since the seizures. I love, love, love Kevin Shirley!!!

I also just bought the 4 dvd Tour de Force set. It's good to see that a person DOES get more than one shot at the Royal Albert Hall! Joe sure made the most of his. His second RAH show is better than the first.  I may have a new shot at life myself and I will try to make the most of it too ...

Merry Christmas to all! (BTW, Joe has done 3 great Xmas songs!)

Re: I First Heard Beth and Joe right after Seizures

Steve,
First of all, welcome to the forum! Secondly, I'm sorry to hear of your troubles but kinda know where you're coming from. My Dad has stage 5 Alzheimer's and although it's not the same issue as you have, there are some similarities. I brought him home to live with me about a year ago and introduced him to Beth and Joe. Like you, he absolutely loves hearing and watching them. I don't know whether they are helping his memory or hearing, but they do make him (and me) happy and I'm grateful for that.
Hang in there and know that you couldn't have a more supporting "family" than all of us here in Bonaland.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: I First Heard Beth and Joe right after Seizures

Welcome Steve. Your story mirrors quite a few others. Joe seems to have some healing properties to his music and they manifest in many ways. Glad to hear that you are making progress. Here's one I captured that will bring another tear or two. Joe and Beth at one of the first performances together. Small club and so nailed it was silly. Enjoy and continue your healing. Don't be a stranger here, there's a big family of fans who will be very welcoming. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqaHfmJUI_Y

Re: I First Heard Beth and Joe right after Seizures

Steve, how wonderful you found this Forum, where many kindred spirits live!  There are SO many of us on here that Joe and his music have literally saved from the brink.  I thoroughly believe he and Beth are both healers in musician's disguise!  Have you seen Beth's personal story?  That is a beautiful one too.

Well, now you are right where you belong, among Joe and Beth's best fans.  Stick around and you will have lots of fun here!  A hearty welcome to you!

Wow, what a great story Steve! Welcome!!

Re: I First Heard Beth and Joe right after Seizures

Thanks guys, I appreciate your good wishes!

Yes, I do believe in the therapeutic values of music. I had a slight case of prostate cancer a couple of years ago and I ran out and bought $200 of Rolling Stones music! LOL! But, the prostate cancer turned out to be a cakewalk compared to the seizures in April.

I really love guitar music. I have a large collection of Hendrix, Allman, Betts, Winter, Buchanan, Muddy Waters and lots of the old bluesmen. The Texas guitarist John Campbell was my cousin. He recorded two albums for Electra before he passed, but you can find lots of videos of him on You Tube. However, Joe Bonamassa the first guitarist I have collected in over 30 years.

Also, my wife really likes Joe's music (she plays the pipe organ) She did not appreciate Johnny Winter or even my cousin, John Campbell and she especially does not like Ted Nugent. LOL! But, we can watch a lot of Joe Bonamassa together. Being a classical musician she appreciates his gifts - and that the videos clearly show his hands playing. Like me, she appreciates good production values in a show.

On You Tube is a video of my cousin John Campbell playing at the New Orleans Jazz Heritage Festival in the 90's. He played an amplified acoustic guitar and a national steel - backed by a smoking rock band. Does anyone know if Joe has ever heard him??

Thanks again guys, it's good to be here.
