Getting back to the nuts and bolts of the "tone" in question, I broke out an old album that truly blows my mind with respect to rock guitar recordings...Thin Lizzy's "Johnny the Fox" album. (Robertson and Gorham) if I am not mistaken, really encapsulated the sound that moves me to play.

Killer album. That band continue to be a huge influence on me.

Think that was the sound of Marshall JMP 50 Watters awesome sound

"Everybody's entitled to my opinion. wink

I am so enamored by their sound...don't get me wrong, the hooks are great, but I have always found their guitar sound to be huge and in your face...yet airy and ethereal. For me, it really doesn't get much better.

The wah-wah solo in Warrior...insane!

I always dug the She Knows solos...from Night Life...that made me want to play...and melodically.
I remember seeing Scott in 2005 with John Sykes...and he was running four modded JMPs (I think Jose Arredondo) into four cabs...it is still today, the loudest backline I have ever heard. I still have the ringing in the ears to prove it....but so glorious hearing the thundering intro to Whiskey in the Jar from those Marshalls. A supremely tasteful player.

(Laughing) I saw Vai a few years back, and was fortunate to have front row in front of his rig (only a couple heads and 4x12's) I always enjoyed a players stage sound rather than the board mix...I would love to hear what Angus/Malcolm, Page, or Becks stage tones are like.

Got to hear Page front row in 2007...that was a pretty rocking sound with single channel Oranges AD30. Beck would be the ultimate though. If we mortals were to play through that same rig...oh man...it'd sound like a practice amp!
Speaking of which...here's his latest RR.
