Topic: Best or Favorite performance from "Tour de Force" ?

Just thought I'd throw this out for discussion...What's your favorite song performance from the 4 discs ??? My pick....well..."Pain and Sorrow" even though it was a slightly abbreviated version....This is a tune I've been waiting to show up on a live DVD since "Rockpalost"...Finally! Love it......All versions of "John Henry" come in 2nd !! Gotta love that theramin...

Re: Best or Favorite performance from "Tour de Force" ?

Quick summary. Borderline: great for those that didn't see the trio but for those that did a parting shot with Strats. Shepherds Bush: My favorite from the set. The most unique of the shows with the horns and the emphasis on blues. Can't pick a favorite of the show yet. Hammersmith Apollo: Captures what was essentially the Spring tour and my second favorite. RAH: What is the Fall tour and the only disappointment is that I compare it to 2009 where the room was as much a star as the band and Joe were. With the lights out in the room it could be anywhere. There are some good shots of the ceiling however. To be fair though I ordered it accidentally in DVD instead of Blu Ray so part of my critiques could be moot after I view in HD. Really my favorite part is Joe and Roy telling their story.

Re: Best or Favorite performance from "Tour de Force" ?

I would have to pick one from each disc, because I can't just pick one! LOL
Borderline-pain and sorrow
Shepherds Bush-Chains and Things
Hammersmith-Dislocated Boy
RAH-Just got paid

Re: Best or Favorite performance from "Tour de Force" ?

As above but would place Blues Deluxe top of the Borderline set

Easy for me!  Blues deluxe. This is the song that turned my head when I saw Joe live the first time.  This version just epic.  Edit to add around the bend. Perfection!

Re: Best or Favorite performance from "Tour de Force" ?

I agree with that "Dislocated Boy" pick....best version I've heard!

Re: Best or Favorite performance from "Tour de Force" ?

I totally agree Jane, but only wish that he had played it with the energy that he used to. Still, beggars can't be choosers. Also Tea for One, much the same in that it used to be just that bit more umphh. However as a set they are all great in their own right. Of the four, Borderline/ Hammersmith Odeon / Albert Hall / Shepherds Bush but it is close. I just love live music though above studio recordings. big_smile cool

Joe's solo on "Pain & Sorrow" at The Borderline was, in my opinion, fantastic and incredible...NOW, this year. big_smile Oops! I forgot, his solo on "Pain & Sorrow" at The Borderline, in my opinion, was also HOT!.  Had to put the cool glasses on, for protection. That Strat had, in my opinion, a sweeter mysticality than the old dark daze blackie Strat.  And that's only concerning Joe, not yet describing the band, or any other songs on Tour De Force performances. big_smile

edit: I didn't say it was my favorite.  I also didn't say it WASN'T.
2nd edit: ps-I clarify that I was only describing the solo(ing), not the rest of the song or performance(s) so far.

Re: Best or Favorite performance from "Tour de Force" ?

This is to add to or edit my first post on this topic.  I have now watched all 4 films twice.  Just not a bad note on any of it IMO.

That said,  for me personally I have several favorites.
My favorite in entirety is Shepherd Bush Empire. Just dig  blues with horns.  ( Plus Joe seems so happy)

Blues Deluxe is number one from all the shows.  Just epic, stellar and any word you can use.

Chains and Things is my second favorite for all the shows,  Joe's voice and heart are so honest. Love it.

Tied for third are two songs from Royal Albert Hall.   Just Got Paid and Around the Bend. I think Around the Bend is perfection on an acoustic guitar.  Just the timing and arrangement and Joe's voice, Ah, perfect.
Just Got Paid because you can tell Joe is realizing he has accomplished the goal an puts in all he has left to just slay this song. I love the feel from the crowd.  Seeing our own Roy and Bill rocking out on the front of the stage made even sweeter.

That's it. Thanks for listening.  Again just love the entire thing. Thank you Joe and bands.  Epic stuff

Re: Best or Favorite performance from "Tour de Force" ?

A lot of folks seem to like the whole band with horn section!! It does add that extra bluesy feel.

My favourites Pain and sorrow, tea for one as standout tracks, what I meant was the youthful approachand energy as on this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE3DDqhZAZI Will still watch both but worth a view to any who missed this live performance. I'm just an old rocker and lover of the 20 minute tracks... lol

Re: Best or Favorite performance from "Tour de Force" ?

Borderline:
1. I Know Where I Belong (because it's my favorite song)
2. Blues Deluxe (most incredible version ever!)
3. Burning Hell (would love to see this in person)

Shepherds Bush:
1. Chains and Things (hands down the best song of the night)
2. Great Flood
Agree that the horns are just fantastic and Joe certainly appears happiest playing big band style

Hammersmith Apollo:
1. Tea For One (for some reason I am always on the verge of tears with this song. It gets me every time I hear it)
2. Dislocated Boy (love watching Arlan and Joe's solo is pretty amazing, too wink )

Haven't watched RAH yet so can't comment on it

Re: Best or Favorite performance from "Tour de Force" ?

After much review of show 2...I must say, the brass does add a nice touch to tunes like "Last Kiss" "Stop", So Many Roads"...Chains and Things is also great from this disc...because it's one of the few songs not already on disc... and "LRB"....VERY NICE..
