Topic: Hello from Iowa

Ooh, what fun -- my very first post! I'm delighted to report that, after months of hoping Joe would return to Iowa on his tour, I just scored fabulous presale tickets to his show in Des Moines next April. This will be my first time seeing Joe, as I've only been a fan for about a year and a half. But boy, what a huge fan I am know that I know about him...

I'd heard of Joe over the last several years, but hadn't actually heard him play until I caught his Beacon Theatre performance of "Midnight Blues" on Palladia one night. To say I was mesmerized would be an understatement. I was so blown away by his hauntingly clean tone and technical pyrotechnics (that crazy high-note climax of the solo while the band shifts chords underneath? total eargasm), not to mention his gorgeous vocals, that I just listened to it over and over, wondering how in the world I hadn't yet paid more attention to his music.

So now, you guessed it: I'm a convert. Totally, embarrassingly obsessed with his music. And SO thrilled to be able to see him perform live, just eight rows away, in six months. Someday I dream of getting to sing onstage with him (I know, a lofty goal, but it's good to dream big!), but for now, I'll just continue to enjoy his magnificent talent and keep practicing on my own (I just started guitar lessons not too long ago). I've had such fun trying to break down some of Joe's licks just for my own brain-puzzle enjoyment. smile

Well, that's enough for now. Looking forward to exploring this forum more soon!

Haha, believe it or not, neither: I'm a Kentucky Wildcats girl! Lived in Lexington for 10 years before I moved here, and it's impossible not to become a huge UK basketball fan if you are inundated with it for that long.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!

Warm welcomes are what we do around here. And I was just joshin' about the sports thing, of course...my heart belongs to my beloved Mizzou Tigers, even though I've lived in Iowa for close to a decade now...  wink

Welcome. You aren't in bad company having this obsession. I hope to meet you in Des Moines. There will be a big party of fans there, kind of an annual gathering.

Re: Hello from Iowa

Cool, I look forward to meeting you guys there too! I'll be going with my guitar teacher, who's a big Joe fan himself! I think he saw him last time he came to DM...

Re: Hello from Iowa

Welcome to Joe's Bigtop!  I will look forward to meeting you too! As you can see I am in Iowa, too. Are you in Des Moines?  Just curious if your guitar teacher is someone I know. We will have a great time at the show again.  We'll be having some pre-show activity with a rather large contingent from across the USA as already indicated. Hope you can join us!

P.S.  When I came out of work tonite at Des Moines Performing Arts, Joe was all aglow on the big sign outside! So perfect! Gave me a thrill!  I would post a pic here but don't think I can with my IPad.

Re: Hello from Iowa

Welcome Jigsaw!  Glad you are here!  Fairly new guitar player myself.  Lots of great info on here for ya.

One I love playing, for several reasons but one is for it's relative ease, is Django.  Give it a go, your teacher likely already plays it.  As you play it, you will discover more reasons to play, and love Joe!

I actually live about two hours from Des Moines, in Fairfield, and my teacher lives and has a studio in Ottumwa. His name is Chris Hunter; does that ring a bell? And he saw that sign too, a couple weeks ago when he ran the half marathon! Crazy that it's up six months in advance!

Anyway, yeah, this'll be my first time at the Joe-show rodeo, so I'm not sure how the whole meetup thing works, but I'm sure you guys will clue me in as the time nears. So far away, blarg... But at least I get to catch Robert Cray in Riverside on Nov. 15th; that should be fun! smile

Thank you! Yes, I'm having fun exploring all the nooks and crannies of the forum. I haven't learned all of Django yet (and I'm learning on an acoustic, so that sort of changes things), but I did figure out the bridge by listening to it, singing it, and then finding each note on my guitar and charting it in my tabs book. I mean, I'm still super beginner, so I'm just tackling switching chords with some semblance of maintaining the tempo. smile But since I sing, I have fun figuring out all his licks just by singing them and then locating the notes; it's like a fun puzzle. And, ooh! I can finally play some barre chords, thank god. Thought the day would never come. (This post is making me realize I need to practice way more, lol...)
