The quality of the sound last night in Edinburgh was far superior to Aberdeen and made it a different show for me, even though it was the same set list. And isn't the start of Dust Bowl similar to the start of Money for Nothing by Dire Staits?

A very enthusiastic 3,000 Edinburgh crowd - but where are they when "smaller" blues rock bands need their support?

So that was my 6th show by Joe. I enjoyed the solo set for the first time. Jelly Roll was credited to John Martyn on the Sloe Gin album so I'm not sure while Charles Mingus is now credited. The change over to the electric set was seemless and there was a good sound balance out on the stalls. I was on the 10th row. Someday After A While (acutually a Buddy Guy) song was one of the standouts and Mignight Blues was also superb. Generally I prefer Joe's bluesier songs and on the whole the show was too rocky for my tastes these days. I also prefer the warmer atmosphere of smaller shows. I think many would not normally attend blues / rock shows as they see them as too bluesy, so I'm probably in the minority. However it was an impressive performance by Joe and it was good to see Derek get a good degree of solo playing time in the set.  Interestingly I was sat beside two guys from the North East of England and we spoke about Alan Nimmo and later I spotted his brother Stevie was at the show. Nice to go to a big gig, but I'll not miss the cramped seats at my next show (Gerry Jablonski on Friday).

Im sure someday after a while is Freddie King song , tons of people have covered it though.

Re: Edinburgh - The Playhouse

Just thought I'd add my tuppence as well. This was my 2nd gig and the first time I saw Joe quite close up and 'in the zone'. The sound was great, and I loved the set list - Song of Yesterday was my personal favourite (got a pretty good reaction from the crowd), the whole show was just incredible.

I'd like to comment on ticket prices, as it's something that's often touched on, not just around here. We were in the stalls, 7th row from the front, so we paid a fair whack. I did grumble a little bit at the time but after last nights show I really do feel it was worth every penny. I've been to many a cheaper gig, not many artists play for nearly 2.5 hours and even fewer play at Joe's level.

Can't wait for the next time!!

Same here, but I hope ticket prices don't go beyond 85 quid next spring

Re: Edinburgh - The Playhouse

First post. This is the third time I have seen Joe, all three times in Edinburgh but three different venues. Thought he was excellent on Tuesday. Maybe it's just me but I thought there was a different vibe with Derek on keyboards - was Joe a bit more relaxed. Anyway, I thought the mellotron (at least I think it was a mellotron) at the start of Sloe Gin was mesmerising. Driving Towards The Daylight, Mountain Time, Sloe Gin, John Henry and Songs Of Yesterday (with the Won't Get Fooled Again section) were incredible. Not too far behind were Dust Bowl. Slow Train and Midnight Blues. Incredible night.

Re: Edinburgh - The Playhouse

Hi and welcome. Why not do an introduction in the thread for just that. o you play, music you like, how you dscovered Joe etc, if not, welcome anyway and enjoy the good friendly company on here... big_smile

How did Joe rank alongside your best Rush concert?

Re: Edinburgh - The Playhouse

Welcome to the forum jm. Nice succinct review. I had a feeling Joe would mesh well with Derek. It sounds like Derek is getting up to speed now. Can't wait for the US tour to start.

Re: Edinburgh - The Playhouse

I was well impressed with Derek. I had read that he wasn't as good as Arlan, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But it was awesome,  he was great, and seemed at ease.

Re: Edinburgh - The Playhouse

Hi. I first became aware of Joe when I heard his version of Led Zepp's Tea For One on a Classic Rock cd giveaway. The first cd of his I bought on the day of release was John Henry and, probably like all members of this forum, own all his cd's and dvds/blurays (althoughI admit I haven't bought the rock candy funk party cd). As I have said I thought Joe was immense on Tuesday. In my teens my favourite group was Free and my favourite guitar player was Paul Kossoff. I know Joe is a big fan of Koss and I wish that he had formed a band with Paul Rodgers instead of Glenn Hughes (having said that I thought BCC were superb and to this day I regret passing up the chance to see them in Newcastle - not the best decision I have ever made). Anyway, I was watching Joe on Tuesday and some of his mannerisms and facial expressions reminded of Koss and, of course, that vibrato is wonderful. I'm very much looking forward to the Tour de Force bluray releases.
As for Rush - as much as I admire Joe I have to say that Rush, to me, are the best band on the planet. I have seen them now on every UK tour since Hemispheres in 1979 with the exception of the Roll The Bones tour. The Clockwork Angels concert at the SECC in May was unbelievable.
I am also a huge admirer of Steven Wilson. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to see him with Porcupine Tree but saw him in Glasgow in March this year on the Raven tour and will see him again in October.

Re: Edinburgh - The Playhouse

Hi and welcome from Aberdeen.

There are many Paul Kossoff fans on here - just look at my avatar smile

Re: Edinburgh - The Playhouse

I have just noted a previous comment about the ticket prices for this tour. I'm ashamed to admit it but I did have second thoughts as I considered the ticket prices a bit too high. The ticket was almost as expensive as Rush. I couldn't, however, pass up the chance of seeing Joe once again in Edinburgh and I can't emphasise enough how pleased and relieved I am that I did go. That taught me a lesson that I will pay whatever I have to to see him in Edinburgh.
May I also express my amazement at the disruption during the concert with people getting up and down from their seats to go to or return from the bar or loo. I mean, for goodness sake, even during Sloe Gin and John Henry there was a steady stream (pardon the pun) of people spoiling the view of myself and others. Shameful. I never noticed it last year at the Usher Hall as I was up in the gods but it was extremely annoying where I was in the Playhouse (stalls row R)
Apologies for the rant.

That's impressive. I was never fortunate to see Free. I saw Bad Company and the Andy Fraser band when he played without a guitar player. My highlight was seeing Back Street Crawler in Glasgow not long after Koss recovered.  He played all night with a huge smile on his face. Sadly, he died a few months after.

Re: Edinburgh - The Playhouse

Fantastic performance in Edinburgh.
My 7th Joe show and probably the best so far.
Could have travelled the 20 miles from where I live to Manchester but decided that the more intimate surroundings of Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre 200 miles away would be more rewarding.
Reading the comments regarding sound quality at Manchester I think my decision was more than vindicated.

Re: Edinburgh - The Playhouse

Great new interpretations of songs from the catalogue and the introduction of Derek's solo's had me back in the 70's. How I used to love the sound of the Mellotron especially. Joe's playing gets more and more technical and subtle. Gutted that I hissed the tour due to surgery especially if 2015 is correct but what can you do. Thanks for the links... big_smile big_smile

Re: Edinburgh - The Playhouse

I'm loving that Mellotron as well. Derek has fleshed out that version very nicely since the first playing in LA at the Bluesmasters.
