Topic: Russ Tippins on the road

Anyone in the N.East of England will know of Russ - throw a dartboard at a map of the country between the Tyne and the Tees and if there's a pub in the town he's either played it, playing it or will be there soon.

Well, he's stretching his legs a bit, has a festival date coming up in Nebraska shortly as well as some dates later in the summer in Indiana with Travis Feaster. However, if you can't get that far, but are close to Bluescafe at Apledoorn (NL) on June 6th and you like your Blues with a Whole lotta Zepp, I'd recommend you get yourselves along for a treat.

Re: Russ Tippins on the road

Just to update - Russ has told me that the Nebraska show is off. Aparently the headliner pulled out and they can't get anyone in to fill the bill.

As for Holland, that gig is still on, but he's looking for a couple of other gigs either side. Shameless plug here, but Russ is a great guy, on and off stage, so if you've any suggestions or know any promoters/owners who'd be interested, would you P.M. me please and I'll pass it on. Thanks

Re: Russ Tippins on the road

Try the Podium Cafe near Rotterdam, very bohemian place, crowd is mostly musos, we are not expecting much but it was a great gig and the crowd were really up for it. We started of to a modest crowd but phones were soon out of pockets and the place filled up very nicely indeed. Just about everyone had a huge bifta and no need for a haze machine wink good one to do on the way back to the ferry. Also tell him to book DFDs ferries, loads cheaper than anyone else.

Re: Russ Tippins on the road

Thanks Martin - you're a gent. I'll pass that on to Russ straight away. He got the Apeldoorn gig almost as soon as he sent out his press pack, but little response since. Its hard enough getting Russ out the area, never mind the country, so like to see it worth the effort.

Heard back from Russ, while he didn't manage to get anymore gigs in The Netherlands, the band had a great time at Bluescafe, Apledoorn and look forward to a return visit, possibly November-ish.

Here's a link to a local review:- http://www.bluesmagazine.nl/verslag-the … -juni-2012

My Dutch isn't brilliant, but think Russ & band went down well and deserve a return trip on a Saturday instead of a mid-week slot and deserve more dates round the country. Watch out - the Geordies are coming.....

Away from "home" ground, you can catch Russ & band:-
Maryport Blues Festival; Blues Trail 28th July - Sailor's Return, @ 10pm
                                                  or   29th July - Labour Club, @ 4pm
Colne Blues Festival; British Stage @ 2pm

Re: Russ Tippins on the road

If you're from outside the North East but caught Russ and the band at Maryport at the end of July, you can catch him in late August at Colne (British Stage).

In the autumn he's also got a couple of dates (so far) away from his home ground:-

Friday 2nd November... CHELTENHAM... Tubby Blues Club

Saturday 3rd November... AMSTERDAM... Malo Meloe

Well worth catchin'

Re: Russ Tippins on the road

Finally, got round to seeing local hero Russ Tippins up on stage, with his Electric Band; electric by name, electric by nature and not “eclectic” as Russ tends to be, solo.  As Russ gigs so much loclally, tend to take him a bit for granted.

Opening with some frantic, fiery picking, Russ dived into 2 new tracks with a Allman’s feel as he’s a new album due out next month; and sounding pretty good, even the title track, Combustion. True to form, you can take the guy out the Led Zep tribute band, but not the Led Zep out the guy, Russ dived into The Lemon Song, showing not only can he manage the Page licks, he can also hit the Plant notes. Not to be outdone, Ian Halford on drums was giving it planty of “thrutch” at the back, and John Dawson was playing the bass like a rhythm guitar. Little Josephine and Electrickery were reminders of Russ’s debut album before he hit with another new track; Poncho, a Texas boogie with a hook reminicent from an old, old, Shadows number, before leaving everyone Dazed And Confused.

Re: Russ Tippins on the road

Had a look down Eaglescliffe at the week-end, for the Friday "Blues At The Bay" to catch Russ in solo blues mode for his first time at this now established weekly event.

Russ, solo, is a different beast to his Electric Band gigs (and they're as different again to his other project), and while they to tend to pander toward pub singer / covers artist, Russ keeps the sets pretty fluid and throws in the odd surprise. First set is a 60 minute acoustic and this evening started off with a nimble bit of scuttlebuttin' before keeping the Southern feel with a great take on Simple Man and rattling through various odds and ends before a surprising cover of the ol' Jaques Brel chestnut, Next before rounding off with Russ' speciality of a Led Zepp cover - this time Bron-y-Aur Stomp; Russ really working the looper.

2nd set, and Russ swaps the acoustic for the Strat and starts gently with Wind Cries Mary before taking the audience of new and old fans on a nostalgic trip with a couple more Hendrix standards, Little Wing & Voodoo Chile and for me, a showcase moment, the instrumental take on Walkin' In Memphis and a take on the standout track off his new album, Tear Down The Sky before closing the set with Purple Haze and curfew limit blazing encore Baby Please Don't Go coupled with Oh Well.

Okay, so a lot of covers, but siting in a small, sweaty pub room, a great opportunity to sit at watch Russ' awesome technique on acoustic and electric and take it from me, his fingers are fluid; and these sets are as much just for a good time as anything else. Russ' next gig will be a more rock orientated set: if you ant to see him in full blues/rock mode, get the Electric Band some gigs round your area, but be quick, a lot of time is being taken up by the Satan project (NWOBHM band) where Russ unleashes the full Fender.

Re: Russ Tippins on the road

Wow - has it been THAT long since last posted about Russ?

Don't get the impression that he's been idle - anything but. There's still a raft of solo and acoustic gigs up round here in the North East as well as Electric Band gigs and renewed interest/activity in the old Metal band Satan.

Now, in the "as many formats as Marcus Bonfanti" stakes, word is out that Russ has also re-formed his old Zeppelin tribute band, Zep 3 with gigs coming up at Hartlepool and Darlington. I'm not the biggest fan of tribute bands but so far as Zeppelin ones go, Zep 3 were among the very best, not least because of the double whammy of Russ's amazing voice and guitar.

Upcoming band shows:-
                          BOLDON... SLEEPERS... 18/05
                          HARTLEPOOL... SUPPORTERS CLUB... 24/05
HEBDEN BRIDGE... BLUES FESTIVAL... 25/05 8pm
DARLINGTON... FORUM MUSIC CENTRE... 30/05 (with Groove Train)
WHITLEY BAY... AVALON HOTEL... 07/06 (with Groove Train)
                          STANLEY... THE OX... 14/06
                          HEBBURN... WARDLES... 27/06
SALTBURN.... BLUES CLUB... 28/06 (with Mitch Laddie)
                          COUNDON.... WM CLUB... 05/07

Re: Russ Tippins on the road

Innisfree Social Club, Longbenton - 6th Dec 2022

Yikes! Has it been that long since I last caught Russ on the road, let alone in "Electric Band" mode? Well, more than happy to have made up for it last night, as Russ & the Electric Band, aka John Dawson on bass and Ian Halford behind the drums were the openers for Franck Carducci on a rare visit to Newcastle.

Such a blast to hear Russ' own songs from the 2 albums made with the band, rubbing shoulders with a choice selection of Led Zeppelin covers such as Immigrant Song, Dazed & Confused and Good Times Bad Times. As well as being a "local legend", Russ is one of the few guys who can play like Jimmy Page and [still] sing like Robert Plant, at the same time. And not to be outshone, John Dawson is a bassist who's usually duite high on folk's session shopping list while Ian, also a in-demand session & tutor guy is a solid drummer of the Simon Kirk school.

Slight tinge of sadness with the set though, this was the penultimate showing for the guys as a band, due to numerous other commitments, it's easier to get a planetary alignment than getting the 3 guys on stage together. (Last show will be Fec 27th at Forest hall Ex-Servicemen's.)
