Topic: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

The Hoax has finally released a new studio recording after 15 years. It's called Big City Blues and will be available on ITunes on Aug. 19th. I have an advance download of the CD and it's outstanding. As the follow up to Humdinger their last release which is a masterpiece this one is almost equal to it. Jon Amor and Jesse Davey provide great guitar solos as expected. Hugh Coltman's  vocals are excellent as always. If wish he had a bit more harmonica on the CD as he excels at that as well. Robin Davey on bass and Mark Barrett on drums are solid as the backbone of the band. A great CD that is long overdue. I highly recommend you get a copy.

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

Just got into my advance download - agree with everything you say David; it's almost like they've never been away, except, have they got a little better?

Really looking forward to the Guisborough gig in a couple of weeks.

I'm with you David. It's been a long wait. The CD is stellar, all the boys are on point. I still like Humdinger better. Maybe because it's more "raw". I still dream of a live show one day. I did send George to one in Holland as my proxy. I got a photo of the band with a "Hi Cathy" sign, so I'm getting closer. wink

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

Guisborough 4/9/13

Oh boy - where do you start on a review of last night’s Hoax gig at Guisborough? Probably best to firstly apologise to Albany Down who are due to play the venue on the 14th - when I left just before midnight there was just a smoking crater where the football club stood only hours before: Kath has promised that they’ll do their best to re-build before the next gig…..and it has just had a fresh coat of paint too….

Were they that good? Oh yes, and then some. The Hoax came and went inbetween the times I was listening to Blues/rock, so over the last few years their legend, whispered in awed tones has given them a sort of “urban myth” status, like a 12bar Bigfoot; early hayday performances happening in pre-YouTube days, lost to the ether; there’s little evidence of the claims. However, they never really went away, did they? Keeping their hands in with solo and side projects, producing other bands, re-uniting for anniversary gigs or their own “Hoaxfests” but now they are together again, with purpose. And such is their reputation, even for a mid-week show, this was sold out months in advance.

Where to start with last night’s show? After a half-hour acoustic set from local lad Alan Barnett, another Guisborough top find from their regular Monday Jam nights, The Hoax took the stage shortly before 10pm, and came out swinging; this wasn’t going to be a reunion, comeback gig, they were lean and mean and taking no prisoners. The set was a mix of Hoax classics, with new songs from the Big City Blues album slotting in seamlessly from the hypnotically driving opener, entreating us to Stick Around. The packed out sweat-box that the room was gave Give Me A Drink, the 3rd number added meaning, but by then Hugh, Jesse, Jon, Robin & Mark were more than in their stride and the 100 minute solid set just seemed to fly. Jon and Jesse, the twin leads have such contrasting styles, but there is such chemistry between them. Hugh is a double whammy or top class vocalist with the range and power of any of the best soul singers to come out of Philly or Detroit as well as a leading harp player. Those three held together by the tight but fluid rhythms from Robin on bass and Mark on drums, I doubt we’ll be looking far for nominees in next year’s Blues Awards. Title track Big City Blues and the dirty riffing Hipslicker already at home among more established Hoax numbers, but easily the evenings highlight was the epic Don’t Shake My Hand, not to be outdone by the different guitar styles of Jon and then Jesse, Hugh took his vocals from low growl right up his range.

The two song encore didn’t include the signature Jon and Jesse reaching to plays each other’s guitar, maybe down to stage size limitations, but just had the feel that the band wanted to play on and on, every bit as much as the audience did – makes you wonder what a Hoax hometown gig must be like. In the heat, it was also going to be a wonder what would give out first, the amps overheating, the band passing out from dehydration or the audience giving out with heat exhaustion. In the end, by unspoken mutual agreement, it was a three-way tie.

Biggest question of the night then, not so much why have they left it until now to jump back into the fray, nor why haven’t the crowd at Guisborough been there at other shows there; but how the devil did Jesse Davy manage to do the whole show and keep his leather jacket on?

Seriously though, my ears are still ringing and I could barely sleep last night, I'm still buzzin' so to anyone heading to tonight's Edinburgh show, brace yourselves for a hell of a gig.

Mike

PS - If you missed out this time round, watch this space for news of a further tour in December: dates for Cranleigh and Bristol already out there.

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

Like you, Mike, my attention was elsewhere when The Hoax were winning their awards for Blues Band Of The Year and Blues Album Of The Year, but thanks to a certain forum member from Edinburgh who's not been seen around these parts lately, I finally caught up with them a few years ago. So far I've only seen 3/5ths of the band as Jesse Davey and Friends when they played a local pub a few years ago, but it was a superb evening and we did see Jon and Jesse reaching to plays each other’s guitar. smile

I'd been contemplating seeing the band on this tour but your beautifully crafted review has finally kicked my backside into gear and prompted me to buy tickets for their show at the Half Moon on Sunday. Thanks! I'm really looking forward to seeing and hearing Hugh's vocals and wonderful harp playing live for the first time.

As Pete will be with me we'll hopefully have some decent video to share afterwards.

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

Cheers Phil - goes without saying, but enjoy Sunday. It only took 1/5 of the band (Jon Amor Blues Group) to convince me they would be a must-see if ever they got back together and headed this way. Wednesday's gig runs neck-and-neck with Ryan McGarvey at H/pool back in May as Gig of The Year.

Couldn't really video at Guisborough, people were having to pull away from the front to find a draught somewhere, the heat in the place really was overpowering. By the end of the night though, the dance area was packed.

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

I saw them at Newark on Friday night and they were sensational! Can only imagine what it would be like to see them in a small all standing club instead of a seated theatre. Kind of wishing I'd gone to their Edinburgh gig on Thursday night to break up the journey down to Newark. Apparently they're doing more gigs in December.

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

Went to see them last night in St Helens at the Citadel. Small venue in two tiers. Have seen a number of top bands there so knew the sound would be good. Opening for the Hoax was Lawrence Jones, and for him this was his home town, so lots of support for him. Lawrence laid on a good set and showed his guitar prowess well, later joining the Hoax in their finale for a jam. Good stuff Lawrence!!
The hoax were superb! Each band member playing their part beautifully. So impressed with every player. It was interesting to learn that their new album was funded in whole by their fans!!!! For gods sake don't tell Roy Weisman!!!!!!! Here's the info on that little gem.

Definately got the taste. Want to see more of them now. Excellent live!!

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

If you haven't seen Laurence Jones before, keep your eye out for him, he's a very impressive, fearless, young guitar-slinger.

The Hoax funded their album through the pledge route; looked for £12,500, got over £15000 in short order, and what we got - Priceless!

Re: The Hoax -Big City Blues New CD

Seen them four times on the current tour, they are back on the road again in December, all I know are the dates in Cranleigh Surrey, Bristol and Manchester, more to be added in UK & Northern Europe.

I have taken some video from the recent triumphant gig at Newark Blues Festival, show why they are the best blues rock band about, no one comes near them

Keeping an eye out for the December dates - all I know is, at the Guisborough show I recognised promoters from at least 5 other N.East clubs in the audience. Fingers crossed!
