Well it’s been a long time coming, but Aynsley’s excellent new album “Home” was officially launched on Friday at the Robin 2 in considerable style, with an extended set that showcased ten of the twelve tracks on the CD, and included enough old favourites to keep everyone happy.

Ron Sayer Jr and his band kicked off proceedings with a cracking 45 minute set that really got the place warmed up - if it wasn’t warm enough already thanks to the arrival of our first summer “heatwave”.

During the changeover the audience were entertained by blues DJ Gary Grainger, who then introduced on stage Aynsley and the band, who kicked straight off with regular hard hitting opener “Big Sleep” before slowing things down a little with another crowd favourite “Early Morning Dew”.
Then came the first salvo from the new CD, with “Inside Out” followed by “Hyde 2612” (preceded by Aynsley’s tale of how he was inspired to write this about one of his favourite TV shows “Life on Mars”) and then “Sugar”.
Back to the crowd favourites next with the emotional “What’s It All About?” before giving the new material another showcase with”Insatiable”, which features a superb change of tempo for the chorus that really kicks the song up a gear.
“Straight Talkin’ Woman” followed with just Aynsley and his Strat for the first verse, grooving up that infectious shuffle/walking bass line combination, before being joined by Andre on keys, for the next verse or two, and then the whole band kicking in from the solo onwards. This one really takes Aynsley back to his roots, and went down a storm with the audience.
Next up was powerful  CD title track “Home” and the equally impressive “Free”, Aynsley’s tribute to a good friend and supporter who was recently lost to illness.
Another old favourite was next to make an appearance in the shape of “Hurricane”, and then back to the new CD for “Broke”, and the superb cover of “Feeling Good”, before another oldie but goodie “Hero”. Set closer was one of my personal favourites from the new CD, “Possession” (Yep – I’m a sucker for a really well done shuffle dontcha know )

There’s always an encore right? Not sure many were expecting Aynsley to open it up with an old fan favourite from way back that hasn’t made the setlist for a good while though. Yes – “Balls of Steel” revisited – maybe with one or two rough edges as for this particular line-up of the band it was a first time, but nonetheless received with aplomb by the still eager audience. And of course how could Aynsley finish the night without playing the cover he’s made his own (as they say)  “Purple Rain” took us up to the 2 hour mark and brought down the curtain on a superb album launch night.

I posted my first ever videos on Aynsley's forum a couple of weeks ago after seeing him at the New Crawdaddy Blues Club near me on 11th July, but omitted to post here. I hope you like these for my first effort taken with my new TZ40. It's pretty good for video and a shame I didn't have it in March.   I also took videos of Big Sleep, Inside Out, WIAA, Insatiable, Straight Talkin' Woman, Possession, Hero and Purple Rain, so if you have any requests I'll try to upload them.

Anyone going to Aynsley's gig at the Garage in London with Joe Louis Walker tomorrow night? I'm not sure at the moment. Tix are £22 (inc fees), which is a lot more than the £10 I paid to see Aynsley a few weeks ago. I know JLW is the headline but he's an unknown to me - showing my ignorance here - so Aynsley's the main attraction for me. I wonder if the two of them will get together on stage?

Okay - so I've already posted this - I'm just guessing there are some fans of Aynsley who don't have the first clue where Darlington is....

Yeah, once again Darlington Town Council, along with Mike Prendergast & Darlington R’n'B Club did the town proud with yesterday’s free Blues/Rock festival.

The Atlantic Soul Messengers get the proceedings underway way at 1pm in the Market Place with a heady mix of Soul standards, and their horn section singled the start for other bands to kick off in various pubs and bars around the market square. As ever, a day of something for everyone; from the acoustic stylings of our ol’ mate from another forum, Gary Grainger to the heavy 70’s rock of Tom Atkinson. Really, if you couldn’t find something you liked, then you weren’t trying, even with the traditional “legends” set, this year from The Pretty Things. As John mentions, so many bands on in so many places, it’s almost impossible to catch everyone, but even just the ones I caught brief snatches of, were giving it their all, so my apologies for not name checking everyone.

Main even for us though was Aynsley, and get the grumbles over, he was only given an hour, but in his first appearance in the town since December 2007 (said he, speedily checking the archive…....), Aynsley & the band came out swinging. The set, as expected was centred round the new album, but Hyde, Home, Sugar, Inside Out and Possession went down well with the gathered crowd along side a couple of Aynsley “standards” and an impromptu acapella Fly Me To The Moon. With the Darlington festival, you know you’re good when you stop the casual Sunday shopper in their tracks; you’re something special though when you can pull folks out the surrounding pubs and bars; and they stayed to listen, despite the dirty trick the weather played. Well, that last appearance in town was a sold-out show, so maybe Darlington has a good memory too. The weather wasn’t the kindest, Aynsley keeping his coat on until the last possible moment while Andre resolutely wouldn’t remove his parker, looking like he was auditioning for The Stone Roses…. Only Steve and Boneto didn’t seem to mind the cold - too much.

There was really nasty, squally downpour that scattered all but the die-hards (including forum old-guard Britbabe), but I was just working out last night - had the change-over gremlins not appeared and Aynsley’s set started on time, then it would have happened in time for the opening bars of set closer Purple Rain. Slight irony, after the change-over and The Pretty Things’ set got underway, the clouds parted and bathed Darlington in glorious autumn sunshine.
