Video of Andrew Pipe, guitarist of The Mentulls, up on stage with Ryan McGarvey last Saturday 11th May at Hartlepool.
The Quaker House in Darlington is a little gem of a pub; real ale & real music being the main features. However, it’s not the easiest place to find if you don’t know the town and the right little alleyway to pick. Walking though the alley early yesterday evening, to make sure I could still get a late ticket for The Mentulls, I could hear some familiar chords coming to greet me; “Hang on” I thought, “Aynsley Lister’s half way to Germany by now….” The lads were doing their sound check and were running through What’s It All About: pretty good it sounded too.
So, pre-show, having a drink and chat for an hour, joined by friends and some familiar faces and finding out what I missed at Hebden Bridge, the lads took to the stage and kicked off in no-holds barred, heavy form. First set was pretty much as Guisborough back in February but what has changed, or increased is their collective confidence as a band. For nearly 50 minutes they really worked it, mixing in Redhouse and Going Down among songs from their Time Flies album.
Short pause and into the 2nd set and what happened? They were still rockin’ but maybe the intimate atmosphere of the venue kicked in, but they were really enjoying it; Andrew was hopping round the small stage, Nick was in overdrive and even the usually sedate Jamie was up and down behind the keys. 3rd song in and the launched into the Aynsley number and gave it a good rattle. By the end of the set closer, Just Got Paid incorporating some influence from The Nice if my ears didn't decieve, Quaker House wasn’t going to let them go, and they were called back for 3 encores, including Joe B’s So It Like That. at audience request.
No doubt about it, Andrew, Jamie & Nick continue to grow as a band, (bit like another 2 other brothers and a friend…). To be honest, in a relatively short time they have outgrown venues the size of Quaker House, which they played to honour a commitment, but small as it is, any band playing there can’t just “wing it” and fool the regulars. On last night’s showing, The Mentulls more than proved to a full house that they are ready to move up with the big boys and I’d reckon they are a High E string diameter from breaking through; some more good gigs for the remainder of this year, and 2014 will be their year.

Hey Guys,
Can you confirm that there's another date "sneaked" in there - Nov 9th, Mainsforth Community Hall with Aynsley Lister?
Hopefully this time Willie won't be putting the last of his holiday money in the electric meter...
