Topic: Welcome Derek Sherinian!

I was super lucky and got to hear the debut of Derek's play to the tour in the Blues Masters Finals. His skills will add a new facet to the band and I look forward to the first reports from South America.
Derek is very familiar to those Prog fans here and the BCC fans. His resume in the keyboard world is second to none. His selection by Joe speaks for itself.

Re: Welcome Derek Sherinian!

Let me add my warm welcome to Derek.  Great choice as always, Joe!  So excited for this tour coming up.  Hope Lenny Castro is still in for the fall tour.  Loved the videos from the Blues Master gig.  Derek is wonderful

Re: Welcome Derek Sherinian!

Welcome Derek! I'm usually sitting on tickets to an upcoming show, either spring or fall.
No shows near Chicago this fall...maybe I'll get to see you and the band this spring! Good luck on the tour kick-off!

What happened to Arlan Schierbaum?

Just a guess, but what would you do with a beautiful newlywed Greek wife in your life, and then go hit the road for 6 months with Joe? Arlan is in Greece with his wife enjoying life. Good for Arlan and welcome Derek. big_smile

Re: Welcome Derek Sherinian!

Wow...this is great news. The chemistry will flow! John Henry!

Re: Welcome Derek Sherinian!

Of course both - Arlan as well as Derek- are great keyboarders. I liked Derek very much in BCC, I still don´t know how he will fit in Joe´s band. We will see (and I will miss Arlan´s  playing and his being a very individualistic member of the band).

I agree, I loved Arlan's long B3 solos.

I'd tell her, "See you in 6 months, baby".

I, too, really enjoyed Arlan.  His contributions, especially at the shows in London, put the whole band on a whole new level - one that I enjoyed very much. His mastery with acoustic instruments is so very cool. (Hey with an accordian Joe could play some polkas now - lol). There also seemed to be some great chemistry there as well.  I did enjoy Derek with BCC, but I wasn't crazy about the video I saw from the GC playoffs.  Time will tell, and I'm sure Derek will be bringing some interesting stuff to the table.  Heck, I still miss Rick. Change can be difficult, we'll adjust, and it is Joe's band after all is said and done.

Re: Welcome Derek Sherinian!

I must admit I am going to miss Arlan. Really liked what he brought to the arrangements especially Ballad of John Henry and Dislocated Boy. And his back and forth with Joe on Yonders Wall was great. Had a feeling, though, that he wasn't going to be doing this for an extended period of time, since he is newly married. Will be interesting to see what Derek brings. I guess we will find out soon.  Looking forward to the fall tour!

Re: Welcome Derek Sherinian!

We're all going to miss Arlan (I didn't even get to see him since they switched to Derek for the South American tour) BUT, that's until we see how Derek fits with the band.

Re: Welcome Derek Sherinian!

now to just add a second drummer and a second bass player to remain nameless and you'll have a very full stage.

unfortunantly I have to wait till they release the 2014 schedule to see if they're playing anywhere close to me.

(If only I had 1% of Joe's guitar talent)

Re: Welcome Derek Sherinian!

I think Derek is an excellent keyboardist (?) but he seems to lack the personality and energy that Arlan brings to the band. Based on the vids I've seen, both BCC & GC efforts, I kinda hope this is just a temporary thing. Just my opinion, but there you have it.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

I agree, I loved Arlan's long B3 solos.

The first solo I heard of his live was in Seattle. It was a roaring John Lord esq eargasm. The next two shows were totally different and not in a good way. He turned knobs for a while and meandered and fizzled. Then again seeing him trade licks with Joe was very cool. Not many people can do that on guitar much less B3. Nothing wrong with being an individual in a group but you need to at least be from the same planet. Not sure what planet Arlan was from. He was very eccentric from the little time I spent with him. It was his gig to lose however.

Everybody must realize that the 2 hours on stage are the easiest hours of the day. 22 hours before and after can be the hardest it is those 22 hours that makes or breaks anybody on a tour schedule that Joe keeps. People out there that would do the gig for free because of the glamour or seeing the world have no idea how it affects people after awhile. It is Joe's lifestyle he doesn't know anything else. Derek is a monster player on his own but I wouldn't expect him to do the Arlan stunts but I would expect him to get to solo. I look forward to seeing his spin on the tunes. Derek is a professional. He has his own road cases if you know what I mean. He knows what it is like to be away from home for 16 weeks stints. On the road with Joe is like deployment. You do get some nice long breaks but Spring and fall are grueling tests not for the faint of heart either by you or your significant other.

I say welcome Derek it is good to have you in the family. I look forward to meeting you as a part of the Bonamassa solo band.

After seeing BCC live I came away thinking Derek was great. I'm looking forward to seeing him in Joe's band.

Re: Welcome Derek Sherinian!

Ultimately, it is Joe's band and career, and I trust his judgment about what's best at any given point. Doesn't mean I can't miss Bogie, or Rick, but I have some awesome videos and recordings to remember them by. Any time I start missin' 'em too much, I know what to do...

Never got to see Arlan as part of the band, but I wish him well in his new marriage, and nothing but success in his career. You don't get to play with Joe if you don't have some serious chops...

The only certainty in life beyond death and taxes is change, and if I'm still around when Joe hits the midwest again next spring, I look forward to hearing the latest incarnation of the touring band. For me, it's always going to be about the music, which I have no doubt will be splendid...
