Topic: 2013 Mammoth Bluesapalooza.

Here we are! 4 days of music in the High Sierra. I'll blog as it goes on and add some vids.
We had a rather brutal start. My newly repaired A/C went out as soon as we hit the high desert on the 7 1/2 hour drive from home to Mammoth. Thanks that it was a bit under the 100 degree mark hmm. A pile of cd's fed us tunes on the drive. There was a free jam and kickoff last night but after dinner, we hit the wall of exhaustion fed by the high altitude hypoxia with smoke haze from a nearby wildfire. We could hear the music from our hotel room balcony and it sounded great. Groovy Hoovy was there and said it was SRO and rocking. Today, a paddle boat rental on Lake George for us, then the beginning of a great weekend of Blues in the pines.

Re: 2013 Mammoth Bluesapalooza.

Sorry about the AC issue.  Hope the festival is all you dreamed it would be.  A wonderful mountain top scene. Look forward to those updates this weekend.

Re: 2013 Mammoth Bluesapalooza.

Hope you have a great time Rick.

Re: 2013 Mammoth Bluesapalooza.

Friday's opener was four bands. Gary Hoey with a killer set of fine blues and rock. Carolyn Wonderland followed with a great set. Fine voice and good player. I'd never heard her before and would jump at the chance again. Next was Joan Osborn. She killed it and had the crowd begging for more. Last was Vintage Trouble who were a disappointment to me and many others. Just the wrong type of band for this setting but they played their hearts out. Think James Brown on steroids.

Yes he is.  His new album features some nice guests and I love his cover of Don Nix's "Going Down".

Re: 2013 Mammoth Bluesapalooza.

Today was extra special. Perfect weather, smoke cleared out and we were blessed to have a couple of great blues players. Jimmy Thackery and Tinsley Ellis. I have vid of almost the complete sets for both from the rail. But..... standby for a very, very and special to me, extra rare, video of Jimmy and Tinsley jamming together. Now that was the cherry on top of a fantastic day. Unbelievable and right in front of Helen and I.

Had to make it for work tomorrow JDawg. KWS was a very late add to the lineup, long after we had cemented plans and the Sunday hangover was always a bust anyway. We are home now, still an hour before KWS would be playing. They use the Sunday morning for free labor to spot the place and no one showed so they decided to sweeten the pot and add some decent acts.

Re: 2013 Mammoth Bluesapalooza.

This guy was worth the trip. His voice was not working (a lot of smoke from a nearby fire in the wilderness) so he just played his git for the most part which was fine with the crowd. I looked around on yt for this and the longest clip was about 7 minutes. Grab a beer and put it on full screen hd. 20 minutes of Strat mastery via a vintage blackface Twin Reverb Fender. Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers play Solid Ice. Shot from the rail.

edit: A funny thing after his set. I walked over to the low fence separating the players area and hollered at Jimmy, telling him how much I liked his set and that I'd been a fan forever. He came over for a chat and I asked if I could get a snap. He looked at my JoeB shirt and hat and said, "You must be old as dirt, but I should make you take that **## off first." winked at me and said "Joe's a star.", reached over the top of the fence and put his arm around my shoulders for the shot. What a guy. cool cool cool

Sounds like Jimmy...15 years ago we saw him in a small club in Florida and ended up sitting at the bar with him after the show. Very cool.

Thanks for the videos and pictures!
