Matt Hines the third one of the top ten has been chosen as the winner (I'd spare your time leaving a comment about the top 10 finalists with just saying I feel the same way as you all do!) . I did the same track "The whale that swallowed Jonah" and as far as I know I was in the top100, my video received strong support not only from the US ,but also England, Germany, Spain, Japan, Belgium ,Croatia , Bulgaria, & Tahiti (don't ask how many nights me my friends and family didn't sleep trying to promote the thing all over the world!) ,because of the positive feedback received from die-hard JB fans, sound engineers ,& pro-musicians I happened to believe that my video is one of the many well qualified entries that were overlooked. What do you guys think ? here is my video

Yes that was very good. With the many submissions and only one winner there was bound to be some feelings of disappointment. You can't please everybody. Did yours deserve to be in the top 10? I watched a lot of the videos and there were many deserving. Tough job to judge.

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

First off, my apologies to Mr. Fossett and Golan Eini. It appears the camera chip I used had a bad sector and Fossett's was totally trashed while only the second half or so of Eini's was recoverable, which I put up.

It was said at the show that many thousands of entries were received. I don't know how the final ten were chosen, and it wasn't explained.  I'm sure there are thousands of dashed hopes and bruised egos in the ones not selected. Hats off to all the submitters for putting their playing out there to be seen. I hope this doesn't turn into a sour grapes fest.

Here is what I got, in order. Matt Fosset was #9 and missing. sad He was very good.

Rick has uploaded three performances so far here is his channel http://www.youtube.com/user/Elexmage go to recent uploads. Soon to be more but so far the performances are all amazingly good. Even better than the entries they submitted. the first was the eventual winner. Tough choice if they were all this good.

I think most of them sounded a lot better live than they did on their videos.  I liked Claudio Tristano's the best - he had good phrasing, good use of space and dynamics, good tone, and kept it interesting all the way through.  He was bluesy without being too repetitive or "in the box" so to speak.

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

I was lucky enough to be present at The Mint as well. Overall, everyone of these guys deserved to be there and I would like to thank them for traveling from all corners of the U.S. to entertain us here in L.A. for one evening. It was a blast.

Bill Tracy, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WlhDQf5z1s

Bill had the unenviable task of going first. And if any one of you has ever been in a battle of the bands or a guitar competition like this, it's hard to be the first one out of the gate. But looking back on his performance he did a really awesome job and set the bar pretty high.

Claudio Tristano, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBc0ExhhC0o

I really enjoyed Claudio's performance. Great tone and patience in his playing. I liked how he built up to a crescendo through the entire song.

Eric Hoppe, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csZGsP4dXP4

Eric had an outstanding performance. You could tell Joe was totally into it. I think Eric was definitely in contention in the end to win it.

Matt Hines, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LszLq0Dm5Pk

A deserving winner. Great phrasing, sense of space and timing. A complete performance from front to back. I was standing with him when Joe announced the winner and he was totally surprised and floored it was him.

Tony Stramelia, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ldp6lBvm2TY

Out of everyone, Tony looked like the happiest @#$%^^&# guy there. My wife and I just couldn't get over how jazzed he was every time we saw him. He was soaking up every minute. His spirit and attitude embodied what everyone should strive for in competitions like this. And he played a wicked lap steel.

Golan Eini, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP4n7Lii3BI

One of my favorite performances. Totally has the 70's classic rock, Jimmy Page, Slash thing down. Absolutely owned the performance and had everybody's attention. Great stage presence and just a really cool down to earth dude.

Mario Sen, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3anGUfG9wOY

The thing I loved about Mario was just how he just went for it.  Sure, there were clams here and there, but I love it when a guitarist just loses themselves in the moment and that's exactly what he did. Great stage presence and a very fun performance.

Steve Balkun, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP4n7Lii3BI

Steve  had some tasty slide licks and just an all around cool vibe. However,  I don't think Steve gave the performance he wanted to as he looked kinda bummed afterwards when I saw him. At times his performance felt more like he was accompanying the band rather than being the featured soloist.

Brandon Sollis, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAn8FXXZyEg

Brandon had chops for days. If anything hurt his chances, I think it's because his performance was too heavy metal for a blues competition.  His shredding was outstanding and his arpeggios were killer, but once he started the two-hand tapping I could sense he lost the audience.  If this was a heavy metal contest, he would have run away with it.

Jack Fossett - Great performance but I think he was a victim of circumstance because this was the third time in over an hour the audience was hearing Slow Train.

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

Hello all, Steve Balkun here. One of the "lucky 10" i just want to say hello and glad to see so much chatter over this event and all the finalists, be it good or bad, happy or sad, glad or mad. I would like to start a new thread, if you are at all interested, to maybe give you some insight on how everything went from the "inside", beginning to end. It may help to answer some of your questions and concerns many of you are expressing, as well as give some of you die hard fans an interesting perspective on what it all was really like to have this "experience". It will probably take me a little while to type everything up as i'd like to give as detailed an account of the entire contest/event as i can. But if there in interest in that sort of thing i will get started on trying to form as cohesive a writing as i can.
But until then, peace and good music to all!

As you can imagine it was a lot to take in, and i'm still sorting out in my mind what all took place, so i think it will be good for me as well to get to express all of the feelings and emotions of the entire experience.

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

[Admittedly, a snippet, of Jane's post, to which I'm replying, and perhaps too late to get my point across, but I feel it's worth it, to try]

[Per Jane] "I really don't want to keep the pot stirred but I really can't stop myself from posting my opinion here.
That's all it si, my opinion.....
anyway I think the only thing making it a sour grapes fest is those saying those words. To me it does not at all seem to be about sour grapes or bruised egos, really. The logistics of the contest were less than what should have been reasonably expected."

[My thoughts] Jane, I respect your opinion, as the often referred to "Queen" of the forum.  But, seriously, what's "reasonable" here?  That all who choose to grumble get a voice, even if they show up once, intent just to grumble, and post their personal video link?  First of all, the show is over, much like the contest.  What's to be gained, by showing up here for a "one off" post, except for maybe some sympathy, on how that submission got "screwed"?  Joe doesn't need to take time for that, IMO, however humbly I profess to state it.

I stand by everything I've had to say on this contest, and maybe I've said more than was my due....

Reminds me of an Eagles song...titled "Get Over It".

If these folks are really Joe B fans, let them let their voices be known, by showing up regularly, and not having an "axe" to grind.

Sorry if I seem to be "ragging".  That's kind of a gross way to put it, IMO.

And apologies for a "personal" attack, however unintentional, or appropriate.

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

Points all well said and taken (I already had them myself, too).  I agree with you 100%.  There has been a tone of grapes soured into whine.  I am ok with letting a complaint out.  But it got to the point I had one of my trademark posts typed, saved to disk, but not posted, due to having a couple grains of empathetic sympathy.  And the tune "Get Over It" had come to MY mind also at more than one point.  You weren't making a personal attack on anyone as far as I perceived.

I have ONLY viewed the Guitar Center (guitarcentertv) finals "Procam" winner's video performance Rick B linked for us, and I have to say, that was a WINNING performance in my book.  Fantastic "job" by Matt Hines! cool cool cool cool cool [5 sunglasses rated].  How the think [sic] played out to get he and those others there....I don't have much care or concern.  Just don't pop shots directed at Joe Bonamassa over this.  It's time to due [sic] more back-to-school shopping, ya hear?! tongue

I am going to listen to as many as I can find now.  Even if I think differently than the final results for ENTRIES selected, I believe this was something that needs applauding for from conception to closure.

2,600 entrants.... big_smile Wow!

I almost forgot about this contest.I entered very early and to be honest I'm not a big Bonamassa fan..I'm sure he's great but I've only listened to a couple of his tunes.I can't even remember the name of the song I played to..I worked on it for a little bit and improvised the other 80%.I decided not to use a pick.I just liked the tone of the fingers for that tune and it seemed to go better with the feel of the song.Congrats to whoever won.I'm sure it must have been a great experience. It's just a hobby for me and nothing more..Heres my entry..

I was thinking about this contest and the theme. We all know that one of JoeB's strengths is to take a tune, cover it and make it his own. He threw down the gauntlet to the players and said "Do it!".

I guess that right there is what's a little puzzling to a lot of people.  As I read what JOE was looking for in this contest, I tried to think out of the box and do something different.

I have to admit that the Matt Hines was awesome in his performance, I really enjoyed his playing, but you would never know he was that good by his contest entry and, not a ding against him, but what made his performance 'stand out' or 'different'? For the most part it was fairly standard stuff (done really well mind you), but in the end it was standard blues jamming.

I didn't really hear any story being told in the lead line.
