Topic: "Sloe Gin" - Alternate Version

I recall talk of Doug Henthorn of Healing Sixes once again being a guest vocalist for the title track on Sloe Gin. I think he did a great job on "Tea For One" for the You & Me disc.  I also remember when mention was made of the "controversial" original lyric in "Sloe Gin" ( the BIG one - the "F-Bomb" as my young nephews say).
Well, I was checking out the Healing Sixes My Space page and clicked on the link to Doug's page and there it was: The "alternate" version of "Sloe Gin"!

** CAUTION !! **

** Especially if you plan on playing these versions at work or around the young un's! **

** THESE VERSIONS CONTAIN THE AFOREMENTIONED EXPLETIVE!! **

** UNEDITED  **

I just want to make sure you don't play them around those with "sensitive" ears!!

Besides the vocals, there's a couple of other small differences. However I must say, I really do prefer the version that ended up on the CD. Joe's vocals work great on this track and the "PG" version seems to suit Joe's personality better than the "raw" cut anyway.

Enjoy:

ALSO.........I found a live recording of Tim Curry singing SG. It also contains the original lyric. Just scroll down a bit (alphabetical listing):

Thanks, cool to hear those! both great but man this just really blows my mind. Joe sings that waaaaaaaaaaay better than Henthorn. I am Joe-biased but I think I am pretty objective on this one. nothing against Henthorn - I have much respect and appreciation

The Tim Curry version is waaaaay better than i would have thought!

I also think the d-word and the missing f-word doesn't take anything away from the song at all.

hmm the sirens are less loud on the alt version, do i hear more guitar too> just observations..

Ditto that! Joe sings that song far more passionately than Doug did and it's not even close.

I've got to third that thought.  I really like Henthorn's vocal on Tea For One, but hands down I choose Joe's version of Sloe Gin.

Re: "Sloe Gin" - Alternate Version

where is the passion.  he wailed on tea for one.  i expected better from henthorn.  maybe his voice just doesnt fit the song.  cool to hear, but original(joe version) is the keeper.

also i have to say i had no idea tim curry was a singer.  i was wondering when i heard it was a cover of a tim curry song, i only knew him as an actor.    how weird it is to hear him singing a blues song like this.  not bad though.  f word works better in his version, but damn works better in joes as evidenced by the henthorn version.  the original is really good so weird that tim curry is a singer i had no idea

Re: "Sloe Gin" - Alternate Version

I think I like Joe;s singing version better as well.   Perhaps its just being used to Joe's, but his seems to fit really well with the song.

Singing comments aside. I really like the musical differences in the alternate one, specifically the lack of sirens.  This version shows how unnecessary that was.

Re: "Sloe Gin" - Alternate Version

Just thought of something else.  You know what would have been sweeeet?  If Doug had sang with Joe on Dirt In My Pocket.  I would say its Doug's kind of song.  Anyway, just thinking.

Re: "Sloe Gin" - Alternate Version

I really like the sirens and the texture it adds to the song.

Re: "Sloe Gin" - Alternate Version

I'll just say I'm glad that Joe's vocals were used, glad that "damn" was substituted (not only from a language standpoint, but I just think "damn" flows better than "f***in"), and I'll agree with Phil...I sorta like the sirens, that pause before the drums kick-in always catches my attention.

Sorry liked neither of these versions much.... Would have to hear the studio Curry version with Dick Wagner guitars, Dick was a monster player......
