Topic: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

So, Finally the top 10 have been posted! http://bluesmasters.yoov.io/index_hub_hold.php

Congrats to the top 10!

What do you guitar fans think of the judge's choices?

Who were your favorites that did not make it in?

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

Me too Jane. Just scratching my head a bit trying to figure out what the judges were looking for..
I wish all these guys the best and do not want this thread to turn into a 'that guy stunk" kind of thing but, I think I must not have
understood the scoring even though I read it very carefully. I would love it if a rep would come to this forum and help us understand how 1 person could have 70,000 points and another 700. (rough numbers)
Honestly, there are only 1 or 2 players of the top 10 that I thought might possibly make it.

But hey, I am always trying to keep an open mind, about these things. What do you guys think?

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

I'm disappointed in the top ten.  No amazing players and several bad ones.   We shouldn't be hearing tin-can tones and out of tune bending from finalists in a competition with 2600 entrants.   I feel like they picked the slide player and the dobro player just to include some different instruments  Oh well...it was fun and I wish them all the best.

Here's mine again if anyone else is interested in seeing it before I take it down.

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

Is not a casuality that steve balkun have won guitarcenters contest two times in a row???
And he is not a good guitar player hmmm...
They were only looking for promotion for guitarcenter and joe
I bet joe bonamassa didnt see all the 100 videos, he is a busy man.
I am dissapointed about every finalist, like pandak said i only like 1 or 2 but the other ppones sorry but they sucked.

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

Like most people, I'm pretty surprised by the chosen finalists.  They set up judging criteria, but in the end the criteria is so vague and open to interpretation that they can really justify any position they end up taking.  Without any transparency or actual scoring, it just comes down to gut feelings.  The written criteria for this contest was: (i) authenticity; (ii) technique; (iii) style; and (iv) presence.  You can see that these are just general terms that are completely open to interpretation.  To be fair, music isn't something that fits neatly into some objective criteria and the bottom line is that people hear music differently.

I read a blog with a quote from Joe saying “Each of these ten finalists impressed me not only with their technical skills but how they were able to showcase their personal musical styles in the songs...”  I'm not sure how legit this quote is, but it sounds like it came down to style.  Listening to the finalists, I wasn't really impressed with the technical level of the players and I'm not really even talking about the typical speed and precision aspects that typically get associated with it...I'm just talking about having command of the instrument.  Playing in tune when bending or using a slide...that is basic musical technique in my opinion.

As far as the style comment, I think it's fair to say that most of the players showcased their personal musical styles.  What they are really saying is, they preferred these styles to the styles of other contestants.  I was surprised that Dust Bowl, which seemed pretty popular, wasn't represented in the top 10...but Slow Train, which didn't seem to be a very popular song among contestants, took 2 spots.  This was probably indicative of the stylistic preferences on the judging panel...Whale, Slow Train, Stone Quarry represent 7 of the spots.

Good luck to the finalists!

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

Gsharp #5, and Eric Happe #10....those guys are good, the rest....yipes....uhg
This was a blues contest, not a music contest......I didnt see any blues from any of those guys....but to be honest, not one of the tracks wher blues either. when "judging music",....they should look for the following: ( since they are in the business of music.)
Motive, development, capulation, antecedent, consequent.....Musical proficiency, and technical proficiency. and for crying out loud, you should have your guitar in tune?!?....WTF? I agree with the guy on the other thread...("%$#@@guitar center")....

....but if those guys out played me.....yea right...sorry to be bold.....but im really good.....I think they threw darts at a wall.....me----> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zI5MIgSaeo

Nathan-
I think your theory is as good as any! Would you post a link to that quote?

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

I wish they would post the top 10 from each week. That would be really cool to be able to go through all 100 (with enough time!)
and actually learn something about the whole process. Even when all 2600 were up on the site, it was difficult to scroll, click and look at scores. Even then, it was unclear what week that person entered-(would have been nice to have the actual entry date, instead of "2 months ago") to be able to compare scores and see if you were actually in the running. I'm looking back at the dates trying to figure out who won on a given week- Almost impossible to figure.

BUT, I am sure all this was left intentionally vague. Big companies giving away thousands of dollars have to cover their butts.
Not slamming, just the reality of it.

Anyway, I guess that is another thread altogether! lol.

Back to the topic- Any predictions? :^)

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

The beauty of music competitions like this is the subjectivity.  Even though most of us don't understand why they would pick people who can't bend a note in tune or play something outside generic recycled blues licks, the judges can just say "it was about style"...there really isn't much we can say to refute them...

my bad, here's the correct link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9Pjd9qZBvw

Ok, so-just for fun, I have started a new topic: Were you in the top 10 for your week? If so, please post your video here:
https://forum.jbonamassa.com/viewtopic.php?id=25020

Share this link with anyone that was in the top 10 for their week. Lets see how many we can assemble in one place.

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

Just found this:
About the Selection Process: Aspiring blues guitarists from across the United States were invited to submit their best lead guitar performance to one of the ten official Joe Bonamassa tracks supplied by Guitar Center. All artists who entered were ranked based on their online fan growth during the first round by Yoov.io, a platform that syndicates and measures content engagement throughout web. In the second round, the top-ranked artists were reviewed personally by Joe Bonamassa who handpicked the 10 finalists. Each finalist will travel to Los Angeles to perform at the finale event and a winner will chosen by Bonamassa based on the quality and skill of their live performance.

The finalists will perform live at Guitar Center’s Blues Masters finale event on Saturday, July 27 at Los Angeles’ historical blues club, The Mint.

3 of these guys are contenders, the others were nothing special,
but who knows for sure

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

As I mentioned before, I am curious why the top ten finalists are described as the top 10 during the time period 2/15 through 2/21.  I sent a message to the web-site asking whether contestants who entered after 2/21 were even considered.  I did not receive a response and frankly do not expect to receive a response.

That's really interesting.  have you checked to see if all the winners added their videos before the 21st?

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

It is very difficult if not impossible to ascertain when contestants first entered the contest.

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

Above the list of names is the following:
"Top Ten Artists Week of 02/15/2013 to 02/21/2013"
Where you see "x months ago" that is the date of the latest comment posted by the entrant.  It is not the date they entered the contest.

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

It may be your browser because when I click on the link you provided the language is there right above the names in the blue bar all in capital letters.

Re: Blues Masters 2013 Finalists! What do you think?

Honestly, Yoov.io looks like a new company to me from what I could find on google.  A few of their things are in the "beta" phase. Their contest rules are vague (like most rules) so Yoov.io had wiggle room in the end if the process didn't work.

I just feel like their starcount points system didn't really work or matter.  Personally, I trust more of what I saw on youtube directly, than what I saw on the yoov.io channels.  Nothing against the finalists, but I feel they were arbitrarily chosen because I suspect the Yoov.io "system" didn't work at all.  There were several other contestants with more impressive numbers, views, comments, etc.  More than anything, the contest leaves me really confounded in how it was handled.

Plus, I've read in a few places people tried to contact yoov.io with concerns and questions (myself included) and got no response. Sounds like zero accountability to me.
