Topic: Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival

I know there's a few Kentuckians who are members here and should find a way to travel to Henderson, Ky for this year's event.  Royal Southern Brotherhood, Blues Caravan 2013, Blues Heritage Orchestra, Bernard Allison and others will be playing at Audubon Park and downtown by the Ohio River.  All shows are free to the public.

Man Curby! That is a dandy lineup for a free gig. Helen and I are traveling up the road today for a free fest in the coastal town of Encinitas where the Belly Up Tavern is located. Not any big acts like that but I did win the Belly Up drawing for a Taylor acoustic which will be presented by the beautiful headliner Tristan Prettyman. A nice anniversary present for us! We both plan on dusting off the old skills and see if we remember how to strum a little tune. smile

We live only 20 minutes or so from there. Amped for this year. Friday 14th going early to see local phenom, Boscoe France. Boscoe won guitar center contest last year.

I thought the Belly Up was in Solana Beach, did they move?

Congrats on the Taylor!  I didn't win one, but plan to start playing with the boy's Swamp Ash Les Paul.  Got new strings and had it set up for Boscoe when he played it a couple weeks ago.  Along with playing at the Handy fest, BFB will open for BB King this wednesday at the Victory Theater.  I made a playlist for the bands in the festival and the surprise is Joanne Shaw Taylor.  Forgot how smokin' she is playing.  Not mentioned earlier is Janiva Magness and Jimmy Bowskill are also performing.

It is a  North County coastal deal put on by the Lions and is on the edge of Solana Beach, Encinitas is just up the road and my old surfing days put them in the same lineup since the beach breaks don't have borders. Belly Up is in Solana Beach and sponsored the git giveaway. They are one of the supporting businesses. The stage is outdoors by Fletcher Cove. Hoping the sun makes an appearance today!

Re: Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival

Based on the post about the Blues Caravan I guess Mr. Bowskill will be absent.

Re: Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival

Just sitting in my lawn chair in Ky. listening to my third blues band.  Had a few brews to add to a beautiful day.

Glad you are having one. I'm sitting in the back yard with the laptop and watching Mountain Jam. Not a bad way to spend a gray day here.

Re: Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival

Attended the Friday 6/14 show. Got to see some great music. Boscoe France was wonderful and very endearing. Another semi local band three shades of gray, just excellent.

Terry Evans band was my favorite of the night. He use to be the vocalist for ry coder.  If you ever saw the movie crossroads, he did many of the vocals on that. He had a great guitarist, joe Colombo. Wicked cool.

The Holmes brothers were stellar. They rocked gospel and old blues.  Royal southern brotherhood was ok, but not as great as i expected

Hi Mary,

So sorry I couldn't meet you Friday.  I had to work up in Vincennes early and Saturday was my only option.  The person I wanted to see the most was Joanne Taylor Shaw and that girl melted my face off with her soulful voice and badass playing.  I couldn't help but thinking of her shredding with the McMahon brothers and suppressed a shiver down my spine.  I will say though that her Ruf co-star, Bart Walker, was impressive as well.
Second band, Heritage Blues Orchestra, was mind boggling to my old ears with their countrified blues and classy, classy presentation.  The last band we saw was Janiva Magness and she had everyone up dancing with her redhot band.  Sadly I didn't stay for the headliner, Bernard Allison due to lateness and the huge crowd.  Tough call to make for Curby.
