Re: FOOTBALL!!

Angela, in football a head to head hit by the defensive player usually results in a penalty. these hits occur face to face, or close to it. So a device in different parts of a players helmet could add productive data to help improve the equipment the players use. Also the head on hits are the most devastating due to the way they bend the other players neck, as in a whiplash accident.

A sobering reminder of what a violent game football can be. If any of you saw the helmet to helmet hit in the Denver Bronco/ Buffalo Bills game, you probably felt as sick to your stomach as I did. The Bills player " Kevin Everett" underwent emergency surgery today, after a severe cervical injury. The doctors have to wait up to 72 hours to see the extent of the injury. At this point the're hoping for just "a quality of life" at best. Lets all pray for this young man and his loved ones, we sometimes take our health for granted at times. As a parents of a son who played football for 10 years, we always never could fully enjoy the game until the end, when all the kids were safe.

God bless

Well Shredit,
I heard on the news this morning that Kevin Everett voluntarily moved his arms and legs.  His doctors are still wary about his recovery but are calling this a minor miracle.   They're saying he may walk again.   This sounds like very encouraging and wonderful news.

Do you believe in miracles? Well I certainly do, the power of prayer, absolutely. I love a feel good story, hope the best for this young man. What a joy it must have been for his mom, when he woke from an induced coma, to find hope like that.

Re: FOOTBALL!!

This story was all around the office yesterday, it was a large article in the sports section, cant believe i just heard of this.

June of this year in Oklahoma City, a 32 year old man walked into a bar wearing a Texas Longhorns t-shirt, he ended up in a fist...ahhh, no make that a fight with a die hard Sooner fan 20 years older and much smaller in stature. The 53 year old grabbed the Longhorns crotch actually pulled the dudes "sack" from his body  OOOUUUUUCCCHHHH!!!!  It took 60 stiches to reattach his "bag". The case goes to trial Oct 4th , two days before the Sooners and Longhorns play in Dallas. Were flying in on the 5th, I got to talk the wife into letting me watch the game in Tulsa......Oh yeah, I'll be wearing a Sooners shirt, what do think I am crazy!!!

You see Playboy, when talking about UW, said that it wasn't fair to rank professionals with the amateurs........LOL!!!!!!!!!

Yeah I know, Ive made an effort of laying a little low. Like my buddy who joined the forum said " Schitt Dave, I dont want anyone to know were friends, your to over the top sometimes! " So, there you go, sometimes you need a good back hand, speaking of which, the wife told me to give her a little more attention too!

Shred..Define Too Over the TOP!!! For who (or is it whom?)??? Now, the quality time with the Misses makes sense. I heard that Kevin was given chilled I.V. saline which put his shocked spinal cord into stasis and reduced the swelling. Apparently the hit caused C3 to ride up over C2..I hope this becomes the standard for neck injuries...I was the nurse for high school football where my ex taught and you wouldn't believe the fights I had with coachs when I pulled a kid out...I had to remind them these weren't pro's..keep that in mind when your kids are playing sports....and GO TERPS!!!!!!!!!     Cathy

Any feelings on the outcome of the Patriots?  I think they got off easy...seems a great team is a little tarnished, IMO.

Roy, I've got a buddy who's having the same procedure done next month. His neck injury forced him into early retirement from the Martinez PD. He's an avid golfer and that's what he's most concerned about. Oh, it's sayonara by the way, domo origato hay!

I wouldn't touch this one with a ten foot pole wager wise. The Buckeyes lost a lot of key players to graduation and Willingham is playing with all his own recruits finally. This one could go either way. There's a bar called the University Bar & Grill blocks down from the campus, stroll in there some Sun. you'll think you were just transported to Cleveland somehow. It's the northwest Dawg Pound, home to the Seattle area Browns Backers. I'd love to travel for the Bears/Huskies game 11/17. I've got tix with friends for the University of Spoiled Children game the week before. GO BEARS!!!!!!!

Me either, really...was just looking to get a rise out of you! It's nice to finally (maybe) see the light at the end of the long, dark tunnel that started in 1993 with Billy Joe Hobert and the in-protest resignation of "The Dawg Father" Don James. I think Willingham got a raw deal from Notre Dame and I'm hoping for good things now that he has his recruits at UW.

I've never ventured over the the UB&G but have heard a lot about it. In my younger days I used to go to the U District for Pizza at a place called Piccilo's. Don't know if it's still there, but the pie was amazing.

Good luck to your Golden Bears tomorrow, and see you in November!

Re: FOOTBALL!!

Roy, I'm biotic too! Fusion c5/c6 with donor bone from my hip! Also 2 discectomies in my lower back...Nursing is hard on your body!  Dawg, is your friend getting the new replacement disc that retains range of motion? I'm not sure if they're used for the neck, but they're really cool.

Re: FOOTBALL!!

Five bulging disks here!!! I finally retired from softball 2 weeks ago. Check out this cocktail:

1600 milligrams of motrin

  7.5 of vicodin

1 redbull drink ( gets the drugs in my system faster )

This is administered 2 hours before 7pm game time

Get to the ballpark at 6pm, 30 minutes of stretching, 20 minutes of throwing, 8 minutes of hitting some soft toss. Then I'm hoping to be loose enough to play! It took me a week to recover from any game. I still got alot of skill left for an old fart, but it just wasnt worth it. They want to fuse my neck, but aint going to happen!

Re: FOOTBALL!!

Shred, I was in more pain the 9 months they messed around before surgery than I was within days after surgery. I'm a cut and paste patient. I want my problems fixed so I can get on with things! Nothing worse than long, drawn out pain. It eats away at you. You boys and your combat! I'm not saying you're ready for shuffle board, but welcome to the wonderful world of middle age. I know how much you love baseball. Maybe you can coach kids? Would that be safe? Your decrepit older friend, Cathy

Re: FOOTBALL!!

I hear ya Shred, sounds like my routine. 800 mg motrin an hour or so before, a hot soak before dressing just to loosen things up, then elastic on the ankles and knees. Then get to the field and stretch and warm up. I think you know how cold it gets at night around here and windy, too many times I'd burst outta the box or track a fly and pow!! a hammy or somethin'. I had to face the facts and save what I had left for work. It's tough when your mind makes a promise your body can't keep. Bad left rotator, chronic lower back pain, recurring inflamation in my knees (love those cortisone shots right into the joint). That stuff is cake compared to this current thang though.

Re: FOOTBALL!!

If you wear crash helmets, you must expect serious injuries in my opinion. The neck is very fragile and even motorsport now has the hans device to help prevent whiplash injuries. Get rid of all the head gear or replace it with the "soft" variety, reduce the shoulder padding and the forceful play should be reduced. It may not stop injuries, but players will be more careful about hurting themselves, never mind their oponents, if they are less protected!

Try watching the Rugby World Cup which is being held in France at the moment, and by world cup, I mean there are teams from all over the world playing, not just from one country LOL! very little head gear, a few cauliflower ears, and next to no padding. Some of those guys are 6ft 10in and weight 10 tons - awesome!
