You can recognise me: glasses, big muscles and very pretty...........

Very descriptive, I'm sure I would find you. I'm not sure about the time of my arrival yet.
Anyway, hope to see you.

The entrance of the backstage area is at the right side of the stage (looking at stage).
I'll also show up there and ask whether you could connect with Andre.
Not so sure that you'll find him from the description alone and temperatures will be probably not that hot that he can wear a muscle shirt ;-)
Have a good trip and lets cross fingers that we get a dry weekend.

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival - 18-19 May 2013 - Schöppingen, Germany

We'll start the engines of our Blues mobile today! Nothing is packed so far!!! Beautiful chaos!
The weather can be everything between heaven and hell !!!
Let's hope the best - there's a chance that it'll stay dry from Saturday till Sunday. Just in case, I'll have a raincoat with me.

Today, there's a concert of Tom Vieth & Friends @ Die Zwiebel, Hauptstr. 39, Schöppingen, starting at 8:00 pm
or there's the Feuerwehrkapelle with Blas meets Blues @ stage of Grolsch Blues Festival Schöppingen, starting at 8:30 pm

Let's hope that not only the bands will rock but the weather too lol

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival - 18-19 May 2013 - Schöppingen, Germany

Late weather update -

Saturday could see rain and a thunderstorm, temperatures around 15-17.

Sunday should be dry with temperatures up to as much as 23!!!! big_smile

(I'll be the skinny old guy somewhere near the bespectacled muscle-man Andre.) lol

Have fun folks. We'll be enjoying a similar weekend without camping. (camping available but you have to reserve a year in advance without knowing the fest lineup hmm ) Cool and foggy with morning and evening drizzle is forecast, the usual this time of year. Freeze then fry, then freeze again is de rigeure. I hope Joe saves some for Sunday.

Have fun guys (and girls!), wish I could be there too!
I'm sure it'll be great as always...

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival - 18-19 May 2013 - Schöppingen, Germany

First day was great. Trampled under Foot was the biggest surprise for me, JJ Grey too. Never saw them live before. Otis Taylor was good but I liked his show in 2011 more. The others were all very good. Very different musicstyles.   Details follow after the second day today. We leave in a few hours. Strannik got his tent Cathy!
Yesterday was cold but dry .... today warm and sunny!!! Great audience and many people1
Splendid orginazation as always!

Have fun there on the festival and enjoy the music.

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival - 18-19 May 2013 - Schöppingen, Germany

Schöppingen 2013 was great as always.
And as in the years before it was unbelievable how many phantastic bands played @ Schöppingen. The different music styles and bands took us on a musical journey full of surprises.

On Saturday the openers Mathieu Pesque & Roll Pignault started to warm the hearts in the cold with some folk influenced music and when Trampled Under Foot showed up on stage the temperatures climbed several degrees. At the time JJ Grey Mofro played their set it felt like a hot and sweaty and bright summer day though we had some 10 degrees or less. JJ Grey Mofro were on fire. Phantastic performances so far. Now Otis Taylor: if I hadn't witnessed the magic show of Otis Taylor 2 years ago I would have said: perfect. But as Andre said, great but not so hypnotic like 2 years ago. Maybe because his drummer had difficulties with his drum kit in the beginning and had to change something so it needed some while until he drummed with full power & rhythm. It was a great show, the playing and performance of Anne Harris on violin alone were worth hearing and seeing.
The first festival day was a great one.

When we opened the doors of our camper on Sunday we could see a blue sky and the sun and it was warm!
The bands on Sunday were an absolute surprise. I only knew Ryan McGarvey and had no idea what to expect from the other bands. All I can say one band as good as the other. BabaJack did great to open the day and then Charles Pasy from France followed with some chilly funky and relaxing tunes and then Ryan McGarvey & Justin & Logan rocked like hell and they set the stage on fire ... after the gig the audience stormed the merch ... and it was the most played music the day after at the camping ground - a real hard job for the band to follow. But the Monophonics came out and were brilliant and they were one of the big surprises for me. Definitely a band to see again. Now I started to think whether these two phantastic bands could be topped !!! Nobody around had seen Vasti Jackson live. Everybody said, a brilliant player - but would that be enough??? Then it was showtime! Vasti Jackson stormed out at stage in a red suit and it was clear from the very first second that he was the man to follow Ryan McGarvey and the Monophonics. A red suit hurricane on stage !!! A phantastic player & entertainer! Show time - fun time! One more band - Moreland & Arebuckle with their rootsy stuff were the right guys to end the festival. They rocked their socks off and they emptied my battery. Tried to charge batteries with Coke & chocolate for the jam in the breakfast tent but had to quit before they ended ...

It is the whole package that makes the festival so special: Richard Hölscher's talent to find and invite phantastic bands, the variety of the music, real good sound, meeting some friends, a good audience and nice helpers at the campsite and the festival. Oh and the wheather: dry on Saturday. And warm and sunny on Sunday. What else do you want more???

The Grolsch Blues Festival 2013 was phantastic and as in the years before it will be hard to top that - but I'm sure Richard Hölscher will surprise us again in 2014.

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival - 18-19 May 2013 - Schöppingen, Germany

I hardly know where to start about this weekend. Met some old music scene faces, old Bonabuds and met a couple of new ones for the first time. I was mainly there to meet up with my friend, the stupendously talented and utterly gorgeous Anne Harris, Otis Taylor's fiddle player, and to see Ryan play again. My wildest hopes and expectations were exceeded.

The Saturday was gray and just a bit too chilly for an outdoor festival, but at least the Germans have plenty of beer, bratwurst, and other goodies available at prices that are far cheaper than in Holland. Thankfully, the expected rain didn't turn up. I was talking to a bunch of German guys, friends of a very nice couple I met in Rhede who are also friends of Bibi's. I mentioned that I was waiting for Anne to show up, and three of them went gaga, proclaiming their undying admiration and lust for her. Could I possibly arrange for them to meet her, they asked? I told them that I was pretty sure that Anne would be happy to meet fans.

So, I met up with Anne and we were standing together in the crowd watching Trampled Under Foot, whom I had never seen before. I thought they were great, and Danielle Schnebelin has some pipes! I had just said to her, 'this is the stage where I first saw Michael (Burks) play', when she said, 'look, there's Terry' while pointing to someone walking about 20 feet away. My instant reaction was, 'Terry who?', though the person looked familiar. 'Michael's bass player,' she said. My jaw dropped at this coinkydink!

We called him, he came over, he recognized me too, we talked briefly, and when he realized that I was the guy who shot 'The last ever video', we fell into each other's arms with a huge, and very emotional, man hug. It was a unique moment. Terry Grayson then said that running into me like this had not only made his day, this chance encounter had made his entire tour! He then told me that my film was played when Michael received his two posthumous BMA awards last week. I was both stunned and moved. As you can probably imagine, my time with Anne and my chance encounter with Terry very much overshadowed everything else, even the impact of so much good music.

I have now 'discovered' TUF, as well as JJ Gray and Mofro. JJ has an incredible voice, and his band was kick-ass good. These two were by far the most impressive of the bands I hadn't seen before. Otis Taylor's show was way more than expected, due to the stunning stage presence of Anne Harris, who oozes sensuality while playing the fiddle beautifully, and who has charisma with a capital C. She 'made' the show.

Thankfully, Sunday was quite a bit warmer, though very little sun. Ryan stole the day. I reckon he sold more merch than the other acts put together. Reverend Peytons Big Damn Band was kind of fun, though I couldn't get used to his voice. Old time showman Vasti Jackson from Mississippi was a crowd pleaser. Michael's bass player, Terry, is on tour with him and introduced me to him. I somehow have been promoted to being Vasti's 'Under assistant Dutch promo man', with the goal of finding venues for him for the summer of 2014. All in all, a weekend I will never forget!

P.S. Andre, I think "warm and sunny" is a little too much for Sunday's weather...we saw the sun briefly when we got there, after which it disappeared for good. The temperature was 'comfortable' till it got dark, but it was hardly a proper warm late May day. However, it was 1000% better than the utterly horrible stuff I've had ever since I got home.

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival - 18-19 May 2013 - Schöppingen, Germany

Blues Sissi and Amsterhanmmer reviewed the festival already so I won't have to do it as well. My review and pictures from Marco and Fons  are now on www.bluesmagazine.nl  ( In Dutch)..Have a look please.

With Strannik all went very well! He had a great time he said. Used the tent for 2 nights, so I had to drive back to Schoeppingen to get it the next day  but aren't we bonabuddies there to help eachother out?
We are and we do!
Tomorrow next festival: Highlands Amerfoort but then as friend and fan, so don't have to write for Bluesmagazine. See friends Ryan, Ben Poole and Pat Travers and bands! Will be great

Thanks for posting and lots of fun in Amersfoort.
Weather looks quite good here in the Ruhrpott. So hope it will be the same in Amersfoort.

I'm listening to some of my new CDs.
Both albums of the French bands are great.

Charles Pasi - Uncaged
Blues with jazzy influences: chilly, lazy, sad, funky. Great stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FF-kSkIZGM

Mathieu Pesque & Roll Pignault - Beneath the rising moon
A great acoustic album. Folk influenced by blues or blues influenced by folk. You'll find some kind of Ry Cooder sounds too.

My iPod will play both albums again and again.

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival - 18-19 May 2013 - Schöppingen, Germany

Ah, I'm here at last! I had a vacation after the festival. No personal time at all, you know :-)

The bands were great. Otis the best, of course, in my humble opinion. Anne Harris is stunning.

You are guys are also great! Without Andre's help I would not make it, that's for sure. Andre, I hope you and Rudi enjoyed that funny beverage :-) Say hello to Rudi.

Bibi, thanks for the CDs. Not really my kind of music, but very interesting. I'm still listening them in my car.

I'm the biggest stupid guy I know. On May 25 I was in Belgium, only 100km from the Otis Taylor again. And I did not know about it :-(

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival - 18-19 May 2013 - Schöppingen, Germany

Thanks for your kind words Strannik! I'll see hello to Rudi!

Hope to see you again somewhere on the n musicroad!
