Re: The British Blues Awards 2013

There will always be differences of view when it comes to awards anywhere in respect of which acts are nominated. I’ve been involved in such debates in the past, and we could all name acts we feel should be nominated. In other countries, such awards are decided by those who pay for the privilege regardless of their knowledge of the blues scene. By contrast, to my knowledge the BBA nominators do have a very good knowledge of the UK blues scene. I do believe that any act who produces a good album and markets it well to the UK blues press and DJs can appear in the awards. Of course there are apparent imbalances and regional biases which explain why some acts featuring prominently and other not at all which do reflect the makeup of those who provided a nomination. However as I understand it, there are actually many more people asked to nominate than eventually do so. If an act has prominent media supporters, they do have to hope these supporters are getting involved.
Ultimately though, the most important thing is, that the artists do value the nominations and it does help to raise their profile. Which is my view is a good thing.

I've stated publically and privately some of my views on the awards and most of my concerns from last year have been allayed. It's not perfect by any means. Certainly they would still benefit from approaching a larger and wider range of nominators. It was pleasing to see some new names in the nominations, regardless of whether I know them or not. Without Oli and Virgil in the young artist nomination, it looks wide open.
