Re: Baltimore, Hippodrome

I was NOT a happy camper.  I complained to the Hippodrome manager and they said that there was nothing they could do.  There were a number of us, probably 1/5 of the audience who's view was blocked during almost all of the show by the long tower speakers hanging from the cieling.  Everytime Joe went to the left of stage in front of the organist, which was almost every time he went into a solo,  the view of him was obstructd by the hanging speakers.  There used to be a point of contact on the Bonamassa wesite.  It is gone.  There were lots of people complaining.  When I spent $79 a piece for tickets there was no indication that there would be blocked site lines.

I'm not a complainer and have been following Joe's progress for m ore than a decade.  One audience member behind me made the comment "This is absolutely rediculous."  Those of us that were in this position should be compensated.

One of the highlights of this show run was meeting you Joe. You are the Master Taper and I bow to you. smile My offer stands anytime you're in the area wink

Re: Baltimore, Hippodrome

Sandy, Maggie and I continued their Revolutionary Tour in Baltimore. We got into town around 4pm for the M&G. The number of folks lined up was impressive. I know Joe would rather have been resting, but he also knows how much this means to fans, esp now that it's only a yearly offering for Street Teamers. Thanks to all!!!  I took him some chicken soup, cough drops and herbal tea. The Mother Hen in me fussed over him and he said he was drugged up.  Use that Neti Pot Joe!!! smile I gave him a playable guitar tee shirt and he said "To think I've wasted all this time with a Les Paul in my hands". Yeah right, lol
I was lucky and got a set list with the guitars played. I'm not familiar with them all so I'll write it the best I can.

Acoutic portion all on Alvarez guitars
Palm Trees > Drop D
Seagull        >Drop D
Jelly Roll >Capo 3
Athens to Athens > Open D
Woke up Dreaming > Capo 1
................................................. Electric portion:
Slow Train > Firebird Sunburst '62-'63
Dust Bowl > Ronny..Historic collector's choice
So it's Like That >
Midnight Blues>        All 3 Runt...60 Les Paul Burst
Who's Been Talkin>
Django            >
Mountain Time> Both Music Man Steve Morse Dark Horse
Young Man Blues > White Firebird
Yonders Wall>
Ballad of John Henry> Both Skinner '59 Burst
...............................
Encore
Sloe Gin >
Just Got Paid> Both Spot '59 Burst

Apologies for any mistakes wink

Great interactions with the band with enjoyable solos from Tal and Arlen. Really enjoyed this set list. Happy to hear SILT and Midnight Blues has such a melancholy tone, so beautiful! Another highlight for me was "Look Over Yonders Wall". Again, Joe was worried about his vocal abilities, but he did just fine. I also think he played a little harder because of that worry. By the end of the show he was exhausted. He took a deep breath before "Just Got Paid" that seemed an attempt to muster all he had to finish the show. Fear not, no complaints about this show as far as performance;) And, thanks to the couple who abandoned their front row seats prior to the encore, Maggie and I jumped into their seats and had a grand finale ourselves. smile
I'll go to a Joe show alone any day, any chance, because I know I won't be alone for long. However it was so nice to have the "girls" with me and seeing SO many familiar faces before the show reminds me of the extra gifts we all get being Joe fans. Now if we can just get him back to our area next year. Come on Joe. Baltimore has been with you for many years..feel the love wink

Re: Baltimore, Hippodrome

Great set list, I think that would be the perfect show for me. Im hoping for "so it's like that" at Doheny!

Re: Baltimore, Hippodrome

Cathy, love that you got the list with the guitars.  I love knowing all that kind of information.  This also answers a question I had been going to pose.  the video of Joe playing Midnight Bues had a guitar  I was not familiar with.  I see he calls it Runt.  Too cool.  Explains some statements he has made recently about the 60 les paul.  Now I know it's name and can tell what it looks like from the video.  Thanks

Re: Baltimore, Hippodrome

I'm a little late to the thread, it's taken a while to get caught up after going to both Philly and Baltimore.

Natasha, you should have called your posse smile

Actually, the posse sort of showed up, I was the guy sitting right behind the jerk, witnessed the whole thing, and tried unsuccessfully to get him back to his "cave" at the end of the show.  He was pounding drinks all night and should have been removed.  Sorry it had to end that way.

As for the show, it was so much better than last night in Philly. I know Joe's still ill, but the drug/alcohol combo he cited tonight appeared to be effective! lol  I got a set list with the guitars he used. I'm hoping somebody posts a pic of it. And the set list changed from last night. I loved seeing everybody again. We had a wonderful pre-show hang with everybody as well as the chance to visit with the band. I'll write more tomorrow about the specifics wink

Agreed, Baltimore was better than Philly (but Philly was still great big_smile )

Setlist is already out there, but I was able to get a pict of one.  They're a little harder to come by, I wasn't able to get one for either Philly or Balt.

The videos I took are not the quality that I would have preferred, the location of our seats caused the spotlights to mess with the camera's sensors, so things come out over exposed and washed out. And the hairy mountain of a man in front of me definitely made it difficult to follow Joe. But here goes anyway.

I love Joe's solo on this and luckily he was over on our side when he was doing it.

Thanks!  Got a few views of the "crack", I'm hoping will soon be erased from my memory tongue

No worries, you were definitely rocking out over there, having the time of your life!  We (again) went to the Alewife, but was crowded (and hot) so we ended up down the street at some sports bar where a bunch of Joe fans hung out.  We ran into Cherri and Tim after the show, chatted for a bit, but it was "school night" for most so didn't get a chance to chat w/ others.  Definitely one of the best shows!

Thanks for posting look over yonders wall , I saw Joe play it on monday in philly and it was GREAT .

This is one of my favs!

Re: Baltimore, Hippodrome

I liked the slowed down version of YW, certainly not what was on the CD release, or how Joe played it a year ago (in Chicago, anyway).  Interesting contrast.

Thanks for sharing your vids, Natasha, and also for not sharing the "butt crack" view ahead of you.  Which, as I think of it, could have been applied to the guy that was behind you, too, figuratively speaking.

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

Re: Baltimore, Hippodrome

First, let me say that I attended this concert with my wife, and we both thought Joe was great!  He definitely did NOT disappoint.  This was the first time I've seen him live since accidentally "discovering" him a little over 2 years ago on Palladia.  I've since acquired all of Joe's (and BCC's) CDs and DVDs/BluRays, and find myself listening to Bonamusic probably 2/3s of the time I listen to music.  Everything else just pales and I keep coming back.

This being said, I was less than thrilled with the Hippodrome itself as a concert venue.  I'll second the complaint and estimate above that probably 1/5 of the theater suffered through some sort of obstructed view, and up this estimate to 1/4 of the theater for reasons other than the large hanging speakers - which we didn't actually have a problem with at all.

We sat about 11 rows back on the orchestra level, BUT in seats 5 & 6 from the right side of the theater somewhat near the first side door.  From this poor viewpoint, we could not see either Tal or Carmine, who tends to play standing pretty much in front of the drums, AT ALL.  They were blocked by the right stage opening/curtains, apparently setup way in the back right corner of the stage.  Maybe 10% of the time we could see Carmine if he moved a little toward the stage center, but you couldn't even begin to see Tal's drum kit, much less Tal himself, until you hit the 7th or 8th seat from the side of the theater - which isn't all that big to begin with.  I suspect those on the left side of the theater couldn't see Arlan either, since he was setup in the back left corner rather than the right.  However, Arlan was very easy to see from our viewpoint - and most importantly the star of the show was also highly visible from the right side of the theater the vast majority of the concert - unless he walked back toward the drums.  So, at least we had that big advantage over those on the sides of the upper tiers who apparently got to stare at the big hanging speakers all evening.  While we were most happy to be able to see Joe himself pretty much the whole time, it was weird watching 1/2 a band play most of the night, with drums and bass seemingly coming from nowhere.

It's pretty sad when a huge portion of the seats in a theater - probably up to 10 seats in from either side (11 rows back), and even more than that in the rows farther back, can't even see all the performers.  Perhaps Tal was set up a bit farther back in the corner of the back stage than is normal at the Hippodrome, but it seemed a bit ridiculous to us.

Another issue was the sound - perhaps due to the acoustics on the right side of the theater?  When the low frequencies from the bass and drums were loud, the mid-to-high frequencies were pretty much inaudible.  For instance, we could see Joe singing during the high-bass periods on the louder tracks, but he was often very hard to hear as were the keyboards, if not totally drowned out at times.  But when the bass mellowed out during quieter periods, the sound was overall quite good - such as during Midnight Blues and Sloe Gin for instance (which were ***sweeeeettt***!).

So, for anyone considering attending a concert at the Hippodrome in the future, I would NOT recommend any seat that isn't at least 12 columns in from the sides of the theater - pretty much up the center straight back from the stage.  I might consider attending an event there again in the future, since I was less than thrilled with the Hippodrome itself from a seating and visibility perspective, but only if I can score seats up the center.

BTW, we definitely noticed the tall, bearded drunk dude everyone's been complaining about, since he was not too far to the front and left of us near the front on the right side of the center section of seats.  He kept standing up the whole time and pointing at Joe, obviously utterly wasted.  I remember thinking - "well at least we're not sitting behind THAT guy!" smile.

Moving from the negative comments back to the positive, I was very happy to finally see Joe live.  He was fantastic, definitely living up to my expectations after having watched bazillions of JB youtube videos over the past couple years.  I also commented to my wife that there seemed to be quite a bit of extended jamming on a number of the songs - much more than I've seen on JB's concert DVDs and youtube videos in the past.  This was *really* cool to witness, and Joe and Arlan at least (couldn't see anyone else) seemed to be having quite a bit of fun.  Maybe Joe should chug huge quantities of cold medicine before the show more often!?

I have to say though that I hope Kevin and J&R keep cranking out the live concert BluRays like they have been.  Clear & concise DTS surround sound heard in the comfort of my family room, with an unobstructed view of the full stage on a huge big screen TV, is hard to beat.  However, live is cool now and again just to say you were there if nothing else, to feel the bass, and to witness and partake in the crowd energy and excitement.  It was definitely high.

Re: Baltimore, Hippodrome

Yeah my wife and I were 7th row on the right of the center orchestra section, just a few seats behind the tall drunk guy who stood up a lot. I lost a few photo ops because of him. tongue Oh well, at least HE wasn't yelling and cursing at anyone...

But those stage mics really made it hard to get shots of Carmine and Tal from my side.

They're definitely a lot more strict with photographers now even you have a pass; can't go up to the stage, and - despite that my photog "instructions" said nothing about this - they wouldn't let me take pics from the left center aisle even from several rows back, apparently we were supposed to only be on the far sides by the wall - but as Champster and others have said, you can't see sh** from the sides. Fortunately, the security guy in the aisle next to my seat (I was right on the aisle anyway) didn't complain when I squatted down in the aisle and moved a few rows up... guess they didn't tell him the rules. big_smile

Anyway, I understand Joe doesn't want camera noise interference, I get that. But most of my good shots were from my seat, it was almost pointless to have a photo pass this time.

I tried to post my video of the encore on YouTube -- all 24 minutes of it -- but it timed out at 40%. I will try again at some point, but first things first... getting ready for the Chesapeake Bay Blues Fest.

That's so bizarre.  I haven't picked up my pass for tonight yet but it said you could go up to stage for first three songs. I'll stop by the Beacon later to get the pass
