Topic: Philly review

First the full disclosure:
12th show, huge fan, continue to be.  107 row 4.  Perfect view of the board.

The good:
Great set, most of the long standing populars.  No Bird on a wire but we got JellyRoll !
Opened with a nice long acoustic set, then into slow train.. ending with Sloe Gin and Just got paid.

The bad:
Joe was sick.  You could see it in the energy.  Some places in the show it looked like he was just struggling to get through

The  commentary:

1) STOP PLAYING GYM LOCATIONS.  The sound was horrid.   Guitar was 'tinny'.  The nuance that makes Joe Joe was completely lost.  The rich blues tone just didn't come through.  Vocals didn't come through either.  Lots of echo in the gym  At times it sounded like reverb on top of reverb with some echo thrown in.  The board was set heavy on the mid range bell curve but it just didn't translate.  Academy of Music last year was smoking hot.  This wasn't.  I place it all on the location.

2) Spent a lot of time playing to the band, even during some of the smoking riffs.

3) Bring the theremine back to the front.

Still my favorite band/guitar player by far but this one didn't do it.

Hope you're feeling better Joe.

Re: Philly review

Agreed on your venue review (its all about the music, I know...but it's "sight and sound""...and both suffered at the Liacourus).  Had a feeling it would...during my first visit to the venue (Greenday (to take nephew) in March.  I expressed my wish for a different venue in an April post.)  I realize its all tour/booking logistics....

That said, i'll take a live Joe show any way, any how, and....any where.

You could tell he was down a bit because of the cold.  Still gave it the Joe B 110%.

Best wishes to Joe with the rest of the week's shows....tough schedule.

Re: Philly review

Enjoyed the show last night.  I'm on a road trip so pics are limited but here are two that I really like:

The light show was amazing.

The funniest thing?  Little pieces of paper like confetti were randomly drifting down on occasion from the rafters - for a minute I thought the roof was going.  LOL

"There's a lot of people that are in so much of a hurry to be, I guess, to be famous or that they don't want to take the time to learn to play and do all that. They'd rather just knock it down off a computer and maybe get on a game show and get famous..That's fine if that's what you want to do.

Re: Philly review

This was our 10th show and was not as good as we were used to,the sound in that building was pretty bad,
Joe said he was not feeling good but he still gave us his all. The highlight of the show for me was look over yonders wall,
it was amazing he really nailed it . hope you feel better for the beacon shows we will see you there.

Re: Philly review

When I'm sick I don't want to deal with anybody. Imagine trying to make 2,000 people like you for 2 hours. Plus a meet and greet and whatever his day entails. Yeah you could see he was struggling a bit at times. Kind of made me appreciate it even more. Thanks for giving all you had Joe!

Video not great but sound good ( well as good as that venue will allow)

Was not going to post anymore but having listened to later versions of this I actually think this version is awesome even with the bad acoustics and the cold

Re: Philly review

Dying to know what Joe was running through during "Just Got Paid". The tone was awesome!

Did Joe play "Look Over Yonder Walls" with the red guitar?  I loved what he did on that guitar, but did not recognize the song/songs.  I'm relatively new to the blues.

I can't remember which songs, but he did play that red Gibby!!! I think it's my favorite for now. I'll have to wait for Sandy to post the set list to be exact wink

Re: Philly review

Sandy and Maggie got here Sunday. We left early enough on Monday to avoid work traffic in Philly, but still hit a snag entering the city. We had hoped to go down by the river, find a nice place to eat, then go to the garage when they opened at 6 pm. No offense to locals, but I had been warned that the venue was in a "bad" part of town. As we drove thru the city Maggie noted it didn't look scary at all...then, in a snap, we were surrounded by abandoned buildings and an obvious "change in character" around us. So we opted to find the garage then venture out from there. Sadly Maggie's waterfront experience turned into a local Popeye's, but he is the sailorman. lol When the garage opened we parked and soon heard Joe playing loudly on the next car's radio. Turns out this was a Bonavirgin and he was stoked!! We know that feeling smile
I have to agree with the sound issues. I have no doubt this was due to it being an arena, not a dedicated music venue. We had great seats in front of the soundboard, but no slant to the floor or staggered seats made for difficult viewing. Luckily the emopty seats beside me allowed us to shift for better viewing (one cheek per seat smile ).
When the acoustic set began it was just Joe and Tal. I knew he was sick. No disrespect meant, but Joe was so pale I thought he could sub for Uncle Bernie from Weekend at Bernie's. Poor guy. But there wasn't any sign of it in his playing. He tore up those acoustic guitars. Again, I'll have to wait until Sandy posts the set list as it was diff in Baltimore, sorry.
Slow Train, with all the lights and smoke, kicked off the electric portion of the show in style. I remember gasping at the beauty of the vintage Les Paul with the Bigsby!! True eye candy! Later he played that big red Gibby that I love so much, and I'm glad I was at this show because he didn't play it the next night in Baltimore.
Joe admitted to being ill and vocalized his concern for his singing. No need Joe, you hit the notes wink There was also no signs of subpar performance during the electric portion. I could tell the "energy" wasn't as high as "healthy Joe" shows, but the increased interaction with the band balances that out. We jumped up front after Sloe Gin and got to rock out to Just Got Paid to finish the night. We had an easy trip back to Maryland to prep for the Baltimore show.
