Topic: Bottlerock 2013

It's been one wild week of music for the Napa Valley @ www.bottlerocknapa.com   I and a couple of good friends volunteered some time in return for 2 weekend tix to this event. However we all worked on Thur. & Fri. till 4pm and had free access to all the music as well. Heading back for day 5 shortly to close out the week with Charlie Musslewhite, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Train, and The Zac Brown Band. Some of the highlights so far for me were, a blistering set by The Black Crowes Thur. evening, They've never sounded better. ALO who jammed out just before the Crowes. Vintage Trouble lit up the Main stage early Fri. to the delight of about 7-8,000 mostly new converts, I'd been waiting @ least a year to catch them, only got about 20 mins. on a lunch break though. Blues Traveler played a very tight set right @ happy hour Fri. eve and Popper finally learned not to overpower his killer band with his harp. The act that blew my sox off though were The Whiskey Sisters, this years Best Band @ SouthxSouthwest in Austin where they are based out of. The Sisters are an extension of The Drive-By Truckers who crank out infectious honky tonk rock with angelic vocals, imagine Alisson Kraus & Emmylou Harris. Can't wait for them to get outta Austin more often, catch 'em if you can! Gotta couple of Condos to hang @ tonight in Napa thanks to a dear lady friend who had club points to burn and will be in recovery poolside tomorrow.

Sounding mighty fine J Dawg. I'd toyed with the idea of making that gig but what with the fest next weekend, the birthday and Mom's day it was just too much on the plate this week. We'll be doing our Napa sulfur water and mudbath gig after the Oakland Joe show in December before we shoot down to Santa Barbara. See you then!

I really wanted to check this out! Sounds great! Especially for The Black Crowes and Blues Traveler. JDawg, how were the logistics? I wondered how the tiny town of Napa was going to deal with a festival like that.

Well, for a first time event it went off extremely well. So well that Bottlerock 2014 was announced @ the close of the show by the 2 promoters that put this together as they personally thanked everybody. Tix went on sale today and the promo code 2014 will save you $50.00 off a 3 day pass. Rick, there are many roads that lead into Napa, but the massive shuttle system they organized made getting in & out a breeze. As well as a designated parking site on the edge of town there were shuttle bus pick up areas all over the Bay Area. Inside the event there were lines as can be expected at any event this size, but the restrooms were not one of them. Being a volunteer had its perks like using my credentials to be the only person in the main stage area Sunday morning about 30 minutes before the gates opened and staked out a prime location next to the sound board tent which provided some shade by mid afternoon. I have to admit I took a breather and stayed home Sat. and swapped my ticket for an extra Sunday one that a friend bought off of me for 1/2 price. By volunteering I spent around $100.00 the entire week. The final day was a great day of music, we heard The Secret Sisters, Kacey Musgraves, Charlie Musselwhite, Michael Franti & Spearhead(incredible high energy set), Train, and an awesome closing set by The Zac Brown Band with surprise covers of Ants Marching/Dave Matthews and Sandman/Metallica. Zac Brown may be classified as "country", but anybody that digs good quality music and showmanship can't help but dig these guys.

I'm green with jealousy, but in a good way, J Dawg....  Joan Jett, Richard Thompson, Black Crowes, Alabama Shakes, Blues Traveler (been a long time since I've seen them), Black Keys, Charlie Musselwhite, and all the others, too.  Don't think I could stand it, if I hear what acts you passed on, for Saturday.

That's a full year of concerts for some folks.

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

That's a full year of concerts for some folks.

Sat., Janes Addiction, Kings Of Leon, Dwight Yoakam, Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite, Jackson Browne, & Iron & Wine. There was a total of 16 music acts and KOL & Ben Harper were the only ones I regret missing, but a quiet day at home in my easy chair watching the Giants was an even trade off after already spending 4 days in Napa. Sat. was also the biggest crowd estimated @ 35,000.

Man, nothing that big happened in the 20 years I lived there! We had to go to Day on the Green in Oakland! Next year I might have to go.

Haha, so right Kat. I went to many DOTG's they were like a survival test and all in 1 day. Sunday @ Bottlerock was like a DOTG for me, got there about 11am and left @ 10:30pm. Don't party like I did in the '70's-'80's these days though! With all 4 levels of the seats & the field filled they had about 80,000 @ most of those DOTG's. FB has a Day On The Green page with tons of pics from the shows, a total flashback, check it out.

Charlie solo was his usual genuine bluesy self. I've been diggin' him all over NorCal for 40 years now and never saw a show that disappointed, even in his blind drunken days. Yeah, didn't get enough of VT, If I had pulled one of the post show late night volunteer shifts I could have seen them @ one of the VIP parties.
