Re: Wang Boston Smoking show

I just wrote a review that took 15 min and it disappeared into cyber space. Why do I bother!
I will post tomorrow when I gather my wits agin.
I will say I enjoyed the show but the sound issues form the 13th row ctr orc was nothing short of disappointing. Acoustic set was fine but when Joe went electric we could barely hear his vocals. When I pay 100 dollars I find this unacceptable. Doesn't anyone sit in various seats during the sound check?

Re: Wang Boston Smoking show

Thanks Ron.

I totally agree. I was in center orchestra, 9 rows back. The sound was poor, with the vocals lost in the mix. That said, I did think Joe was astounding, as was the band.

Re: Wang Boston Smoking show

great show as always. i'll post my photos soon. quick question, if any one can confirm this for me one way or the other: the boston photo that joe posted via twitter, is it from friday night or is it from the last time he played the wang? i keep looking at it and people don't seem where i remember them to be (myself included). or am i just getting old?

Re: Wang Boston Smoking show

First, Joe is a fabulous talent, I thoroughly enjoy his music, energy, and  ability.
I've seen him 4 times now, the last at the Wang Friday night. The best show was in Worcester at the Hanover Theatre. He was great, the sound was great, thoroughly enjoyable in that smaller venue.
The previous time was in Providence last year, in the balcony of the Providence Performing Arts Center and  the vocals completely disappeared except during the vocal only segments. I thought it was the acoustics of being in the balcony and a lot of echo off the back of the theater. Otherwise the band was on.
At the Wang, we were on the floor, centered, about 10 rows from the back and not that far from the sound guys. Again, lots of echo and his voice just went away on the louder sections. Very disappointing.
The crowd was late, didn't get settled until about 20 past 8. Of course Joe starts on time, so the acoustic set was pretty much lost for those of us towards the back.
I was surprised to see a different keyboard player, not the fellow (Ric?) that has been with him the last couple times I saw them and on his last live albums. Not sure but there seemed to be some sloppyness that I hadn't noticed before and on a couple of songs Joe and the keyboardist just diddled around for too long, IMHO. Don't mind improvisation and all, but usually he avoids the self-indulgent stuff and stays more true to the song. There was one long B3 solo that wandered around aimlessly.
For the encore we went to stand at the back of the theater and the sound was much better, so that confirmed my suspicion that being under the balcony is not the place to sit.
Anyway, even without the acoustics issues, no where near as enjoyable as previous shows I'd seen. Not a total surprise given how much he tours, I would think it would be very difficult to be totally consistent month after month, night after night.

Yes crowd was very late!!! Sound was good where I was but I wonder if it has to do with the accoustic followed up by the electric. Last fall I ran into this problem(or mabey just my ears adjusting)!! Just sayin'-don't really know but I did notice Carmine gesturing off stage a couple of times to the crew so who knows!!

I have to respectfully disagree with Ron. I was sitting in the second row of the pit, directly behind Ron. There were times that Joe's voice dropped out completely. The issues seemed to the result of a bad audio mix and unrelated to the acoustical properties of the Wang. The audio issues seemed inconsistent. crystal clear at times, while other times the mix sounded very muddy. It was frustrating to hear Joe's voice simply disappear at times despite his proximity to the microphone.
