On to hartlepool :-)
Outstanding gig by Ryan & the band at Earlestown True Blues Club last night.
Talking to Ryan after the show he said they will be playing Carlisle Blues & Rock Festival in November, & also back in the UK May next year.
Well, he’s taller than you’d think…....
I’ve had all day yesterday trying to think of some new way to start a review of my first Ryan McGarvey gig and that’s the best I’ve got so far. Watching what he and the band did at Bellvue in Hartlepool, not only the rule book went out the window, but the dictionary and the thesaurus too. Jaw-bones were dropping left, right and centre from the 150 or so who managed to find Tommy’s new (ad-hoc) venue in Hartlepool.
Thoroughly warmed up by Manchester’s Federal Charm, Ryan strode out with his Les Paul and opened with Blues Knockin’ At My Door – more like kicking it in, grabbing the TV remote, a beer and the best chair, and then a second volley – All The Little Things. That’s all it took to get the Hartlepool crowd thoroughly on his side, but Ryan didn’t back off for an instant; Texas Special, a nod to SRV’s Scuttlebuttin showed lightning fretwork before closing the first set by inviting The Mentull’s Andrew Pipe on stage to mix it with Cream’s Sunshine Of Your Love: I don’t think I’ve heard it done better nor seldom seen Andrew pull off such work.
After a short break, the band were back on and jumped in where they left off, dipping in and out of Redefined and Forward In Reverse before Ryan brought out his Duesenberg Lap-steel. Then all bets were off; last year I saw Jim Suhler give a master class on slide guitar, this was a condensation, with nothing missing. That closed the set and had Hartlepool standing, stomping, yelling and falling off chairs the likes I’ve never seen there before, until the band were back on stage to end with the Hendrix / Eric Johnson infused Mystic Dream that staggered the mind.
I’m not going to overlook Justin on Bass nor Logan behind the drum kit, I’ve always maintained that for the frontman to fly, there’s got to be a great backline, and these guys are as solid as they come; running with Ryan beat for beat.
So, verdict – believe the hyperbole; Ryan McGarvey IS everything that you’ve heard but he works at in on stage 125%. 150 people in Hartlepool will confirm that; by the next time Ryan swings by, 1,500 will say there were there. It’s rare now, that I go to a gig with such a high level of anticipation, but we’ve waited over a year to get Ryan in the UK, since he’s broken through in the rest of Europe, it’s even rarer that my expectations are so exceeded. If you missed out on this tour – make sure he’s on your bucket list for the next.
Oh, he’s about 6’2”.
Well worth my having to buy a copy of Agnetha Faltskog’s new album as tribute to the Norse Gods, just to make sure things didn’t go pear-shaped again.
Ryan connected well with the crowd, apologising for having to pull out last year, but acknowledging that Tommy was the first promoter to pick him up in the UK. Think he was blown away by the reception he got in Hartlepool as I heard a couple of the earlier shows were light in the turn-out.
Bristol is going to be amazing, double-header with Virgil and Aynsley strongly tipped to be stopping by with his Fender. Chatting with Ryan, know he’s really looking forward to finally meeting the guys as well as playing with them - to be honest though, I’d rather be a fly-on-the-wall for the sound check, where the jamming will be “looser”.

Lovely to meet you at Earlestown Eva, and good to know you were being looked after. Enjoy the rest of the tour. Next time you are in Liverpool look Sue and I up, we would love to be your tour guide and host. Ryan was amazing - Maybe see you in Bristol on Wednesday?
Nice review as always, Mike. Fortunately, I flew back from hols yesterday so I'll be able to catch Ryan tonight at the Beaverwood. I was hoping he's play Blue Eyed Angel Blues - there's more than a whiff of Alvin Lee about his playing and voice on this number and it would be a nice tribute.
Sadly, I won't be at the Tunnels tomorrow, but I can't wait to hear all about it from those who'll be there.
Phil
Welcome home Phil - you will be literally blown away........ but you know that

Cheers Phil - At least one of Ryan's "Angel" songs is in the set, Blues Sissi is the best to comment on that. All I'll say is make sure you're jaw-bone is securely riveted in place, it might be getting a little over worked this cliché, but Ryan is something very special.
Four of us from Folkestone tonight should be a good one
Had a great time and much fun in England.
Would have loved to stay a few more days.
I met so many nice people and enthusiastic club owners and can't believe that I'm already back home.
It was great meeting Bonabuddies at every concert: Ian & Max at the Flowerpot, Tripsy at Keighley, Michael & Jully and Geoff & Sue at The True Blues Club and Mike at Hartlepool. By the way Mike, I had a special beer with me all the way from Germany and after the storm of the merch in Hartlepool I forgot to give it to you. Thomas from the venue was also gone when I stumbled about the beer in my bag and so I gave it to a guy sitting in front of some beers who obviously loved beer! Cheers!
Audiences ranging from 30-40 and 90-150 .
All 4 gigs were phantastic with varied set lists.
Every gig was good and had something special. Maybe the most amazing gigs for me were in Hartlepool and Newton-le-Willows.
I absolutely loved the crowd in Hartlepool. They were nicely warmed up from the band Federal Charms and got into the music at the second song "All the little Things". After that it was a grand slam home run for the band. I can't add that much to Mikes review. All I can add is a setlist from the Hartlepool gig:
Blues knocking at my door
All the little things
Downright insane
Never seem to learn
Crying over you
Texas Special
Sunshine of your love (with special guest Andrew Pipe who did great)
------------
Joyride
My sweet angel
So close to heaven
Better watch yourself
Starry night
Right in all the wrong ways (lap steel guitar)
Jam in open G (lap steel guitar)
The band left the stage and the crowd was on their feet in one second and stomped and screamed and shouted for more (absolutely love such a crowd) and of course the band came out for an encore.
Mystic dreams
Again: Applause, applause, applause
The other outstanding gig for me was the one at the True Blues Club in Newton-le-Willows not far from Liverpool.
Maybe about 40 people and they were totally different from the crowd the days before. They were absolutely quiet and clapped their hands politely. Sound was good, band was good, audience held off emotions.
When the band ended the show with 2 phantastic songs on lap steel, the crowd clapped hands politely and I wondered whether the band would come out for an encore. The band came out again and played Mystic dreams. And where the crowds before gave standing ovations it was only a low-key applause. Before the band left stage Ryan said: If you want us once more you have to show it ... and that helped. Now the audience went on their feet and clapped and cheered .... Yes ...
The second encore started with a drum solo from Logan Miles Nix. Then Ryan and Justin McLauchlin went on stage and they played an absolute outstanding "While my guitar gently weeps". Awesome.
Also loved the time after the show at the True Blues Club. Had some fun and found out that I like beer shooters!!!
On Wednesday 15 May from 7-9 pm Ryan McGarvey will be featured on True Blues Show @ www.wa12radio.co.uk
