Re: The British Blues Awards 2013

And congratulations to all the lads and lasses nominated; Chantel McGregor being the first lady to elbow her way into the male dominated Best Guitarist category; Ron Sayer Jr. outstanding with 4 nominations. Odd not seeing Oli in amongst any of the categories this time round.

Some amazingly hard choices is several categories, but once again, there's one category missing - Criminally Overlooked for those artists you'd have thought would also be in the running.

Re: The British Blues Awards 2013

Voted! Great CD like nr.1 too.
Voted best overseas musician; Henrik Freischlader who else of course, guitarplayer UK Ben Poole, bassplayer Barry Pethers and Lewis Hamilton in his category.

Seen them all live too and very good musicians!!!

Re: The British Blues Awards 2013

Jock's Juke Joint - contemporary Blues from Scotland vol 2 voted as best CD!

A must have for people who want to know more about the Scottish Blues World. It opened my eyes! Didn't know most of the artists but I was really surprised in the best way!

Feel free to listen to this link before you choose, but unlike most of the other nominees, this album covers blues in many varying styles

Yes I will Mike.  I've been aware of some of the nominees on Facebook as a few are friends.  Just into your list and I really like Rosco Levee.  Definitely my kind of music.  This is going to be fun and expensive..

Just voted and if I had any influence King King would be big winners along with Ian Siegal & the Mississippi Mudbloods.  I picked Chantel as best female vocalist (easiest pick) and Mitch Laddie as best newcomer.  Best song category was very tough as there were a number of great songs.  I chose Ian, but Ron Sayer (impressive), Rosco Levee and Stuart James Band (darn good little band) were all worthy competition.

Yeah, some choices have been easy; some a little thinking with some folks missing nomination. It's the Newcomer category that's making me sit and think. At least there's a few weeks yet to submit my votes. I agree, think the "big" awards are going to be fought between Alan Nimmo & Ian Siegal, but nothing set in stone.

Some amazingly hard choices is several categories, but once again, there's one category missing - Criminally Overlooked for those artists you'd have thought would also be in the running.

I'd certainly agree there are many criminally overlooked. As for Oli he's now too old for the young artist category. It's often the case with some of the younger blues acts that a major factor in their uniqueness is their young age.

Oli's the diggity dog wink

Thanks Banshee for posting that extensive list of videos.  I know where to come to have some great music this Weekend smile

"Holy Toledo"  -  Bill King   "Just Win Baby" - Al Davis  "The Autumn Wind" - Steve Sabol

Way to go to make someone feel old, referring to Oli as "too old".

Wasn't actually sure on the age limit for Best Newcomer, but never mind; from the looks of recent posts at VATA's gig last night, there'll soon be a new name in there, Aaron Keylock.

I'd just put another twopenn'worth in and suggest there should also be a Best Newcomer - NON-guitar award; while we love our guitarist/singers, they'd be lost without Bassists, Drummers, keyboards, Harps & whatever; lets encourage those lads and lasses.

Re: The British Blues Awards 2013

Criminally ignored artists (not sour grapes as we are too rock for them). Aynsleys and JST would slay most on the list. Artists on the list who's set has a high majority of covers. You can predict festival line ups from nominees. These awards could be very good but transparency is desperately required.
Nice to see Ian Segal getting some recognition. Blues wise, he is the real deal.

Re: The British Blues Awards 2013

What kind of transparency is needed ? As far as I know the nominations are set by people within the industry(radio, reviewers, bloggers, festival organisers, blues media and others) asked to name three artists for each category, the voting numeration process afterwards deems who are going into the arena for the now on-going public vote. If due to the widening spectrum of people being asked to originally nominate improves the nominations, which in many categories, I believe it has, due to a more knowledgeable base of artists being recognised,  I cannot see what the problem is.There are always going to be some people unhappy that so and so isn't nominated, it happens at every awards around the world in every part of media not just BBA's.
I can tell you now that most of the people I originally nominated never made it through to the public vote, but hey that's the way it goes, I cast my votes and see what happens with the rest of the voting.
