Good thoughts. The sight of bystanders running towards the site was encouraging.

Being reported as explosions rather than bombs here, has there been conformation of anything there? Really hope it is some sort of accident and nothing sinister but does not look that way sadly.

Definitely bombs, several unexploded ones found, quite possible they had not gone off because the cellular network was so flooded with calls that detonator calls couldn't get through.  There are reports of a Saudi national in custody.

Not joking with word play here.  I would not be surprised if there is an Iran connection if a foreign connection at all.

Re: Bombs at Boston Marathon finish - Benefit concert 5/30 at TD in Boston

Latest confirmed news.
1. It was 2 bombs designed to do maximum damage via ball bearing packs.
2. There were no other devices found. The reports of others were bags left by fleeing people that were suspicious and exploded by the police just in case.
3. The Saudi national was an innocent student who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He has been released with no charges.
4. As of this moment, there are no clues as to the perpetrator and if it was an organization or an individual. Security was already heightened as a matter of course for the marathon and the govt. reports there had been no advance "intelligence noise" re a heightened threat level.

A terribly sad event, but the rapid response by the nearest uninjured people to provide quick first aid until first responders could arrive has undoubtedly saved a number of lives.
Events such as these are known to our friends across the pond and are something I fear will be a part of our lives here as well. mad

edit. This may be a bit touchy to some, but I became very aware of this during my recent visit to England when a woman mentioned to a man with a soda can that he shouldn't leave it sitting on the floor of the tube carriage. She explained they are all aware of bomb threats continuously and any unattended bit of debris that could be a bomb is viewed with great suspicion and reported. I got into a heated online argument with some folks today that wanted us to take an "ostrich" approach and treat our enemies with peace and love in the hope they would go away. Sadly our enemies view this as a weakness on our part.

It's just a sad world we live in. The London Marathon will go on as planned I saw

Re: Bombs at Boston Marathon finish - Benefit concert 5/30 at TD in Boston

So strange - I just returned from a trip across the pond a week ago, a place that is very security conscious now and for a long time in the past (I remember going there in 1978 and having my camera lens removed at a security point) and come home in time for this.  I live near Boston - Patriot's Day is a day of sports (Red Sox and Marathon) and celebration.  Many times I have been in the city on this holiday to go to the Sox game and catch part of the Marathon.  Whoever planned this chose his spot well - the finish line is always congested with so many wanting to see "their" runner finish, the timing was such that most of the runners finishing at that time were running for charities and for the challenge of finishing a lifelong dream, thus family members would find it easier to get a spot there to see the culmination of a lot of hard work.  The Boston Globe had some amazing videos of the blast and the immediate aftermath, and some thought provoking pictures today.  a colleague at work thought "pictures like that shouldn't be published" but hey, this is what happened, wake up folks.  We live in a different world today, people do need to be aware of their surroundings (like the folks in London) and realize that yes, it can and does happen here.

The latest news is - there is no news.  No imminent arrests, no one else has died (thanks to the wonderful care of bystanders, EMS and Boston's awesome medical centers and others).  Strangely, no one is complaining about one of Boston's main roads being closed for the forseeable future since it is a crime scene (Bostonians dearly love to complain about the traffic).  I think one of the most moving (and scary) things I saw was an interview with a cameraman and a reporter who were in the thick of things - they both had that million-mile stare as they discussed watching so many rushing towards the blasts to help where they could with no thoughts of their own safety.

Us folks from Boston are a proud and tough bunch, and we will take this in stride and move on and be a better city from all this.

Thanks to the world for your support - we appreciate all the love.

Sandy

That was exactly the part that gave me strength watching the endless amount of film. Passers by taking no account of their own safety but rushing to help others where they could. Its a sad world we live in to have to be ever vigilant in every Day life

A gunfight has killed an MIT police officer (responding to a robbery at a 7-11 store) and one of the alleged suspects (Suspect #1); alleged suspect #2 on the move.  Public transportation has been shut down in metropolitan Boston.

Suspects are identified, and are brothers not of alcoholic beverage age (21) from an unamed Balkan country, an area rife with this type of stuff people.  US Of A citizens have not, until now, understood the REAL world sometimes, sorry, telling it like it is.  TV and movie weaned, make that addicted.

I remember when I was in Istanbul, great, beautiful, amazing city, on US Navy shore liberty.
A bunch of us eventually wandered upon a McDonalds, and RickB will tell you also, sailors see that, far from home, an identifiable cultural icon, recognizable as from home, they must stop in.
We did, and had a well-deserved, ridiculously simple and low-key chill session on land for a change.  Not in uniform, like that matters!  Less than a hour later a bomb went off in that very McDonalds.  How in the heavens of 4,000++ sailors who were on shore, NONE were there at the time is befuddling.  Luckily no one was killed.  And here's a little fast-food for thought: we were probably NOT even intended targets.

I forgot to say, apparently the suspects were the robbers, they had carjacked someone at gunpoint, and the MIT police officer was the first responding officer.  Rushing in.....duty......man I salute that guy.  A second officer is in critical condition.

Re: Bombs at Boston Marathon finish - Benefit concert 5/30 at TD in Boston

The two Boston bomb suspects have been named by reports as Chechnyan brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev

Chechnya has been at war with Russia for a long time, not sure why this has spilt onto US soil. Another than another mindless act of extreme violence on innocent people.

Chechnya has been at war for most of the last 10 (written in 2006) years. Low-level violence is continuing, and the republic remains the main source of instability in the volatile Caucasus region.
How long has the Chechen conflict been going on?

Chechnya declared independence from Russia in November 1991, but former Russian President Boris Yeltsin waited until 1994 before sending in the troops to restore Moscow's authority.
That provoked the first Chechen war, which ended in humiliating defeat for the Russian forces in 1996.

In 1997, the then rebel leader Aslan Maskhadov was elected president and Russia recognised his government. But the issue of Chechnya's independence was not resolved.

On 1 October 1999, Russian Prime Minister (later President) Vladimir Putin sent troops back in after Chechen militants crossed into the neighbouring Muslim region of Dagestan in an unsuccessful attempt to start an armed uprising.

Russia's "anti-terrorist operation" also followed a wave of apartment block bombings in Moscow and other cities, widely blamed on Chechens.

What do the Chechens want?

Peace and stability are the main priority for most ordinary people.

Rebel fighters want independence, or at least self-rule, and they almost got it after 1996.

With Russian military forces out of the country, Chechens elected their own president in January 1997 - Aslan Maskhadov, the former Soviet artillery officer who had been the main rebel military commander during the war.

Under the peace deal negotiated with Moscow, a decision on Chechnya's final political status was delayed for five years.

But Mr Maskhadov was unable in peacetime to control his more radical field commanders, such as Shamil Basayev, and the breakaway republic descended into anarchy, becoming one of the hostage-taking capitals of the world.

Are there any prospects for peace?

Not immediately.

Mr Maskhadov was the only man who could and would have represented the rebels in peace talks, and he was killed by Russian forces in March 2005.

It is also doubtful whether Russia can crush the rebels by military force. They have killed a number of key rebel leaders in 2005 and 2006, but Chechnya's mountainous terrain is well-suited to guerrilla warfare.

The rebels stage small-scale attacks and ambushes on an almost daily basis. These are rarely reported outside Russia.

Yep. Sadly this kind of thing will recur here more and more. It appears that terrorist cells are well implanted and are beginning to act. All free people must be ever vigilant like the folks across the pond.

I am so glad that they shot and killed at least one of them. Now I hope they have the opportunity to shoot and kill little brother as well. It won't provide a whole lot of closure at this point for relatives of the dead and wounded, but it will save us the cost of having to try them in court and the cost of incarceration for many years while on death row. Message to terrorists, if you mess with US and kill our innocent citizens, we will kill you back.

Two things, Rick.  I can't agree with you on the "and" part of more and more.  More, it's maybe almost a given.  "And"...not so sure.  I qualify that as bombings of any sort, specifically.  Also, I don't we can call this a "terror cell".  Kids lived here a dozens years.  Intel or misinformation dept. had them here on visas? for a year, intelligence my ****.  Classmates are saying he was a normal, real, nice, average teen!  Parents and a sister beside his brother.  DOMESTIC TERRORISM, as it was first called.  Where's the beef?  Puzzling.

You know I actually agree with this. It's something other countries have adopted. If you harm people for no reason you will be hunted down and killed. As long as there is no doubt who they are. To kill innocents who did nothing other than being there...
