Topic: Question on Gregg Allman

Have a chance to see him in June,  has anyone been to a recent gig by him.   Last time I saw him was several  years ago.  Not too good of a show.

I ask because the week before that is BB King.  I have seen BB several times but would love to see him one more time.  The old budget will not allow for both.    Kind of leaning towards Greg Allman just because it has been a long time.

Re: Question on Gregg Allman

Hi Mary,

I don't know how long ago it was that you saw Gregg but here's a link to the short review I wrote after his last appearance in London in July 2011. As you'll see I was not disappointed. I saw BB around the same time and I know who I'd go to see again if I had the chance. 17 songs from Gregg versus a few anecdotes, a little playing from BB and a lot of playing from his band, means it's a no contest for me. I did enjoy BB but I felt once was enough. I have read similar comments from others who've seen BB more recently.

I am a self confessed Allman Bros nut so I am somewhat biased. big_smile

My thoughts would be to see Gregg and remember BB as he was. Please let us know your decision and how the show goes.

Re: Question on Gregg Allman

Go see Gregg. I saw him in January. Great show and he is back on his feet and feeling friskier by the day. Here's a clip from that show, Floating Bridge from his latest release. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcHCNv2XXg0

Re: Question on Gregg Allman

Go see Gregg. I hate to say it - and he's a national treasure - but BB cannot hold an audience with his playing and singing any longer. We saw this twice, once in 2009 at the Basie in Nj and again at Crossroads 2010 in Chicago.  We took advantage of the previous performance to get out of the venue and parking lot ahead of the crowds.  If you want to listen to stories - disjointed at times - BB. But musically go see Gregg

Re: Question on Gregg Allman

Thanks for the tips and video.   You are probably right.   Just saw that someone is going to make a movie out of Greg Allmans autobiography.     I will let you know what seats I get.   Tickets sale is tomorrow.

We saw Gregg also at the Basie.  The one comment I'd make is if he does any Allman songs he will do them differently.  Not a negative comment.

I didn't want to say this but you have it right. I got my last ticket to see him two years ago.

As they say "caveat emptor". I've seen BB many times over the years. I saw him in NJ years ago right after the EC Riding With The King collaboration and he was great. When he was going to play the Basie I jumped at the chance but frankly we walked out as we had work the next day. If they want to advertise BB telling stories fine. But I felt cheated

Re: Question on Gregg Allman

I saw BB about a year ago and enjoyed the experience. That being said it was a lot of talking ad flirting with the women up front. and not alt of playing. It is more of a personal relationship thing with his fans at this point.Given his age and health I'm suprised he is still on the road.He would play a little and then you. Could tell his handa are hurting him.His tone sounded great as usual, however in very small doses.I cannot commenton Gegg as a solo so It seems you would have to take the BB comments and figure out if its worth going.

Re: Question on Gregg Allman

Regarding BB, last time I saw him was at a small blues fest here locally about 5 years ago.  it was Indigenoius, Tower of Power, BB and then Kenny Wayne Shepherd.  Bb was awesome but his band was the best part.  So yiou are probably right.  Greg Alman and his new stuff is pretty cool.  got a presale code so hoping for front row.

Same here, I'm afraid to say. I saw BB in Montreux in 2011. I left after 20 minutes.

So our experience certainly wasn't an anomaly
