Have you listened to the album at all? Name one track that is "polished" or "poppy". It is folk- and country-flavoured but certainly not pop. True, there are no predictable, formulaic shuffle rip-offs and that's exactly what made me buy the album. It is a grower and I consider it to be among Mayer's best work.

It seems like some people only judge him from his "your body is a wonderland" phase.

Re: New John Mayer Album

Sorry guys, I wasn't referring to this album (should have said that, was simply referring to the material of his I've heard in the past and live performances on DVD's etc... Sorry!

Went to Itunes out of curiosity and talk about reinventing the wheel at least the John Mayer wheel. This album is either genius or career suicide. Time will tell. I liked the first song reminded of me of the time I was into California Contemporary country rock. Eagles, Poco, mid seventies stuff. I saw him on Letterman sitting in with the band wearing the hat ant the old coat kind of doing a Johnny Depp look thing. I wonder if he is trying to reinvent himself again. Pop star, Guitar Hero, now Troubadour, Neil Young thing. He was doing some serious shredding on the breaks with Paul Schaeffer.  Mayer is really an enigma for me now. Don't know quite what to think. Talented guy but he seems to be his own worst enemy. I may download the album and see if I can't connect with it.

I think I'm in agreement with Jim's comments and didn't know what to think after the first couple of listens.  The tabloid rumors that follow him like bad breath also wears on me.  I ask myself if the genius has wandered off stage.  That said the more I listen to Born and Raised the more it grows on me.

Re: New John Mayer Album

My sister is a massive fan of JM but I don't know...it sounds good but it's sooooo Brad Paisley-esque.. True that JM is talented and a good lyricist ...

Actually there's a mutual respect among themselves.  I'd put my money on JM versus Brad or even Keith Urban.

I know, I am Brad fan and my best friend is big Keith fan...
Not a big fan of JM that's all..

Re: New John Mayer Album

Talented guy, I like Continuum and the trio, but for me, JM's biggest talent is as a writer. I was reading the lyrics on "Waiting on the World to Change", just brilliant. Especially these lines...

"And when you trust your television
What you get is what you got
Cause when they own the information, oh
They can bend it all they want"

Yes, agree with Jim comments as well, complicated guy with relationship issues. That Rolling Stone interview a while back was bizarre!! It seems he has made an attempt to keep private matters to himself and to keep a lower profile, while he gets his act together. I think he's a little bit of a lost soul, maybe too much fame and fortune too young...

Re: New John Mayer Album

Okay, this forum has gotten me very curious.... I think I will go get this CD today and give it a whirl!

I am a JM fan for the most part.... just really wish he would stay closer to the blues side. There for awhile I felt like he was getting too mainstream/poppy for my liking. I think he has some deep blues roots when he wants too..... needs to focus on that side IMO. Either way, like his music and going to give it a shot.

Re: New John Mayer Album

this latest disc isnt his best but its worth owning.

Re: New John Mayer Album

Yeah have had album from shortly after its release, and I agree its definitely not my fav, but like Angela has said, I also agree John Mayer's biggest gift is his songwriting. I really don't give a rat's a$$ about his personal life, what he says in such and such magazine, what he drives or who he's knocking boots with, I really like his music. Even if not everything, but he's still very talented. I've had a lot of cds ad stuff for years that maybe I didn't necessarily like at the time I got it, but at some point your mind or whatever can get into it later on. I have a feeling this may be one of those albums. Depending on the mood too of course, its good but it also may be something you have to be in the mood for as opposed to something you can just play at any time.

Re: New John Mayer Album

Here´s a great recent Performance of "Something Like Olivia" including a really soulful solo.

Re: New John Mayer Album

I like John Mayer. Hope he decides to tour Europe soon.

Re: New John Mayer Album

JM is finally slipping away from my interest.

Re: New John Mayer Album

I have different emotions regarding Mayer, but I absolutely LOVE Born and Raised, he just hits the spot... it's raw, true and emotional.

Ps. You should all check out this video on how the album art was created, it is just as amazing as the music on the album! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdfreJmK9R4

Re: New John Mayer Album

Finally got round to getting Born & Raised which seems to have some pretty divided opinions here. On the whole I like it. but do agree in part with what JBfan1 says:-

"but I don't know if I can really buy John as a country boy, dressing up like Neil Young and singing country/folk tunes."

Sort of like the time Johnny Cash got into Bob Dylan - made Dylan credible and Cash cool again, but it wouldn't have worked half as good had it been Pat Boone or Bobby Darin...

Anyway, was on a role and so got Paradise Valley too, similar vein, but streets ahead, so view Born & Raised as a stepping stone.
