Re: Camcorder recommendations?

I hate holding up a camera for a whole show, detracts too much from enjoying it. In a couple of weeks Looxcie is coming out with wide angle/telephoto and maybe zoom lenses for its HD POV recorder. One on each ear with the appropriate lenses for wherever Im sitting looks like the optimal video solution right now. Using the remote they should be perfectly synched for editing. Unfortunately doesn't look like the lenses will be out for the Sacramento show so ive "borrowed" a GoPro Hero 3 that I'll hat mount.  Lenses should be out for Doheny

Audio there is still nothing built into a camera that comes close to a DAR with AT Phantom powered mics.

...a TZ10 is better than a TZ20 if you can get one 'old stock'... USA product detail differs from those sold in the UK ...so a TZ20 bought in the UK will NOT be the same camera as a TZ20 bought in the USA!

What makes the TZ10 better than the TZ20 in your opinion?

...the sensor, less lag in the focus department too and from my own experience as i have all 3 and never use the TZ20 ( its actually a Leica V Lux which is the same as a TZ 20 but with a £200 red dot on the front ) and you can always look at my vid's and see for yourself! ....recent BOJH at The Apollo is with my old TZ 7 ...my first Rory's Strat vid' is with the TZ 20 and then say Jelly Roll at the Apollo etc!  wink

My Lumix auto focus  is driven batty by a few things. If you are in the crowd and someone blocks the camera view it walks off focus for a few seconds. If the high intensity white lights in the show rotate to fully in the view through the fog machine it has a struggle since it works on an ir sensor that is blocked by the fog and light. Otherwise it is usually ok.

thanks Rick. - It was good to shake your hand on Saturday, but not enough time to introduce myself! smile

I and others have been using the top of the line Lumix ZS or TZ series cameras with the CMOS sensor. I used the DMC SZ19 for the Baked Potato gigs recently http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZmnrn7SDwQ . Use those as a benchmark for very low light performance. A snap and shoot size camera with superb performance and relative low cost. Audio performance is also a critical factor on many cameras with most not able to handle the high levels of rock music. The Lumix is incapable of being overloaded with dolby stereo standard. Check out the newest Lumix, the TZ40. Can be found for around $300 or so. Be sure to get a hard case, extra batteries and large 32 gig memory chip for concert use.

edit: I forgot to add that one cool feature is the ability to shoot stills simultaneously while recording video. I used it and got some pretty cool shots. It has a very good intelligent auto mode that obviates the need to know anything about photography and still get good results. Can you tell I love it? lol

Rick, where are you finding a TZ40 for $300??  I'm seeing around $550!

Update: Now I see the ZS30 is the USA TZ40 equivalent (someone on this thread alluded to something like that, I just didn't know the numbers were also different for the same camera), and the best I've seen on that so far is $350.

Base price was at an online discount seller. There is a $100 spread in the market. Add in a spare battery or two and a 32 gig chip and you are at $400. (both batteries and chip are mandatory for shooting a whole gig.) I get about 45 minutes shooting at 720i. Much less at higher rez which makes little difference after youtube conversion and upload. European/Asian numbers are very different for basically the same camera. Pete's advice to get the old cmos sensor unit is good. It has one flaw of "blue streak" when bright lights are viewed onstage.
