Re: Southern Rock

My favorite southern rock band ever is Skynyrd... before I found Joe I was absolutely obsessed with them... I could play every single song they ever did- it was bad (or good depending on how you look at it)... I basically only listened to Skynyrd and every single night before I went to sleep I would listen to Freebird off OMFTR (One More From the Road- probably the greatest live recording ever- its up there with Live at the Fillmore)... Then I found Joe- changed everything for me!  But I still love Skynyrd- great band... incredibly sad story with the plane crash and everything that went on after- all the lawsuits and everything just falling apart- but I still love em!
After Skynyrd, I'd have to say .38 Special is my other favorite southern rock band (I basically like them all- big southern rock nut I am!)  I know everyone says .38 Special is an 80's rock band- but they do have some badass songs- great stuff there- nice and upbeat!

Re: Southern Rock

Looks like this topics been around for a while but so has Southern Rock. I always liked Lynyrd Skynyrd and Charlie Daniels. Simple Man is my favorite Skynyrd song, and The South's Gonna Do It Again is my favorite Charlie Daniels song. The first time I saw them they were touring together in 1973. I saw them at the Municipal Auditorium in the little town of Thibodaux, LA. about 45 miles NW of New Orleans. On October 20th of this year, it will be the 30th anniversary of the plane crash that took the lives of Ronnie, Cassie, and Steve. After Hurricane Katrina my wife and I decided that we needed to look for some higher ground and we bought a place in Osyka, Mississippi about 100 miles from where we now live. Little did I know but one day this year I was wearing my Lynyrd Skynyrd shirt at the tractor dealership and the owner said to me, "I remember the night their plane crashed down the road from where I live". I found out that he lives about six miles from me and their plane went down about 5 miles from my land. I did ride around and tried to find the spot where it crashed but it's on private property. I was hoping that there would be some type of Memorial to them somewhere around the area but I haven't found one yet. The Charlie Daniels song, The South's Gonna Do It Again pretty much covered all of the Southern Rock bands of our day and they were all good in my opinion. I got to see a lot of groups back in the 70's when I was young and I do still go to concerts when I can. There just aren't many around that I want to see except for Joe and he hasn't been to Louisiana since Blues Deluxe came out. Maybe one day he will show up down here I hope.

Re: Southern Rock

Hi Paul, get to know whoever owns the land nowadays because I've seen some photos of a memorial of sorts at the site and also read of a gig the survivors played there on one of the anniversaries. Google Skynyrd and look through the links I think that's where I ran across the info.

Re: Southern Rock

J. Dawg,

I did find some more info on the crash site and I now know exactly where it is. The land is now owned by a Vietnamese family that has chicken houses on it. I will try and get someone to introduce me to them and see if they will let me go to the crash site. I did see some pictures on the net from a couple who went there in April of this year. The site is all grown up and there isn't a memorial, just trees with Lynyrd Skynyrd carved in them and part of the stage where Artimus Pyle and Travis Tritt played for the 25th anniversary of the crash. They are having a memorial bash in Jacksonville, Fla. on the 30th anniversary this year. It's kind of a shame that there isn't anything there in Osyka/Gillsburg but I don't imagine the people who own the land had ever heard of Lynyrd Skynyrd when they bought it. I saw the original band play 5 or 6 times before the crash and I've seen them since they got back together 2 times. The last time I saw them was with ZZ TOP in 2000 I think. I will definitely get to the crash site one day and take some pictures.
