Sorry gsj, I hope I don't sound patronizing...I really don't know / get the amp thing anyway...I am into the circuitry and might consider designing one one day excessively cheap to sell excessively expensive!   I would gather Carol-Ann might be a woman of some import to Alan...mumsie?!... snort, I mean sniff!

The Hollies!!!  Good song btw...

This is so weird... I like to toss a lyric out now and then...I was thinking the tune writng on this subject earlier trying to guess why the guy called the amps that, then later I was here writing Marianne (from Holland) something last night, and I was humming that tune and almost wrote it to her... till I got 'round to thinking about the refrain lyrics (always the last part I get to any song for some reason-many I never know the lyrics, so I guess I wouldn't fare well on those lyric TV shows I heard they have on now)

I think it is Carrie Ann sung by Graham Nash with the Hollies

Re: A New Amps I am really digging

Hi Folks,

I had a chuckle reading the comments on the name of my Company and felt I should set the story straight. Carol-Ann is not my mothers name...Kathleen-Sheila doesn't have quite the same ring to it...LOL !!

I am an Englishman, but have been living just north of Boston, MA for 5 years. I own a full time custom amp building Company in North Andover, MA.

I'm originally an Industrial Control and Instrumentation Engineer by trade. I earned my Masters in Electronic Engineering. I've been playing guitar since I was 8 and building and repairing amps since I was 16.

I came to the US as a Consultant for a large pharmaceutical Company and that is where I met my wife to be.....Carol-Ann. In 2004 I decided to build myself yet another amp, even though at the time we really couldn't afford it. I got around my wife by naming the amp after her.

In early 2006, I had had enough of Corporate life and left and formed my own business, Carol-Ann Custom Amplifiers, LLC. The name had stuck. At first mainly doing repairs and rebuilds, but building the odd amp here and there.

I got a couple of my amps in to the hands of a awesome session player called Matte Henderson, he loved them and bought both on the spot. Matte put me in touch with a bunch of other influential guys like David Torn, Doc from Bad Brains, Lance Keltner, Cliff Cultreri, Tomo Fujita etc

The thing with Joe was a combination of lucky circumstances. Joe was playing at a place local to me that I sometimes run FOH sound for so I was going there anyway. Lance Keltner phoned me up and said I should bring an amp down for Joe to try at sound check. I was a little embarrassed just turning up with an amp, but Lance insisted that Joe was totally cool it.
He certainly was. What a great guy, we chatted about gear for ages and he made me feel welcome and glad I had brought an amp. He tried the amp out, loved it and paid a deposit for his own custom model that night.

Hopefully Joe continues to love the amp.

Essentially, it is like a Dumbleized Marshall. The gain structure is similar to a HRM Dumble, but it is voiced a little different. It is a 100W with a very strong power stage that keeps together even at high volumes. Joe runs his amps pretty hard.

Hi Alan

Thanks for the insight. Now we know how the name came about. Where are you originally from in the UK?

We went to Cumbria on honeymoon around 22 years ago. It was in the winter and Lake Windemere was frozen. The birds were ice skating as they landed.

Do you have a website for your amps?

Geoff

I was in Cumbria last week at the Guitar show.
Saw a guy there called Gwyn Ashton who is an Aussie living in the Midlands.
He played some really good stuff - some Hendrix stuff on accoustic (could have been a steel resonator) as a starter !!
He went on to play some really good bluesy stuff but with a bit of a different "make some noise with a guitar" sort of slant as well (not really describing this very well) which I really liked. He was selling some CDs which he was happy to sign after the slot which I didn't buy as I couldn't be bothered to go to the front and buy one (not like me but they were the most comfortable seats in a theatre I think I've ever sat in). But I did buy one later in the show area and it is really good - think it's called Prohibition. I've tried to get others (I think he has three in total) but haven't found one yet. When I get my own new computer this weekend (the old one is kaput and I'm on a borrowed one here) and get back on line under my own steam I'll check him out on his website and hopefully will be able to buy them from there.

There was also a band playing "good old pub rock classics". They were foot tappingly good with a great sense of humour and just right for such a pleasant Sunday afternoon pastime. And with a lovely sunburst Les Paul making all the right noises. On the way home, stopped at a pub under a very big hill and it was warm enough to sit outside - which we did supping a great pint of the real brown stuff. If it gets better than this let me know 'cos I want some smile

A great £6 worth for the whole show and gigs.

Actually it's all in the fingers- he uses his pinkie finger to do a volume swell on the volume pot...

Re: A New Amps I am really digging

there was a particular line 6 product he talked about in an interview though.  I cant for the life of me remember which one though.   Does he use a push/pull pot or it it just straight?

Re: A New Amps I am really digging

it's in the relatively distant past I believe...no Line 6 anymore, at least not that I'm aware of  Otherwise I'd consider the job offer they gave me

I think you'll find that Line 6 are very much in business with the release of thier new all valve modelling amps. :-)

The only line 6 product I've heard of Joe using was- well actually there were 2- the Line 6 Vetta 2 amp combo (used on ANDY Live and shows around there) and the Line 6 DM-4, which is basically all different types of delays- the best example of Joe using this is at the beginning of Pain & Sorrow- that swell stuff going on there is all the DM-4, so I guess you were right he does use a Line 6 to get some of his "violin" sounds, but for the basic violin sound that he uses- its just his fingers.  He does not use the DM-4 anymore.

Re: A New Amps I am really digging

He does use the Boss DD3 delay on the violin effect combined with the volume pot.

gsj no I did not mean they (Line 6) are not in business, I meant Joe not using them....Line 6 wants designers and I am considering but might do my own thing...;)

BLUESBREAKER by Joe Bonamassa.  Wanted to let everyone know that Joe's column in the new Guitar World (Jan. 08') talks about "Four On The Floor" all that hotrod/amplifier talk! cool  "How my four-way amplifier setup helps me shift musical gears."  smile  Mentions his Carol-Ann JB100 named after yours truly...
