Topic: Van Weelden Royal Overdrive Pedal.

Ok, so Joe posted it yesterday on his twitter. The one and only Van Weelden pedal.
Lot's of Mojo, and lot's of promise. As a fellow Dutchman I am eager to learn what sonic goodness this pedal is able to produce.

Sorry Joe for copying this of your twitter.

About a year ago a Dutch guitar magazine recorded an interview with peter, in which he stated that he was working on a distortionpedal for Joe. And it was going to be the best overdrive pedal ever, able to work with all amps (transistor to tube), and for a transistor based pedal it is supposed to emulate a tube amp very well. Knowing the standard of peter's work I expect no less, but these where very strong words in a market flooded with overdrive pedals.

So please Joe enlighten us mere mortals, Is it going to be available in shops? Is it really that good?

Re: Van Weelden Royal Overdrive Pedal.

I'll say it now.
I won't be able to afford it.

very. i bet it will be 400 dollars for yet another modified tube screamer (though honestly i don't know what the circuit layout is, just an assumption as the TS is the most tweaked layout).  likely quality build, and likely good sound.

Amp: Firebird Musical Amplifiers

Re: Van Weelden Royal Overdrive Pedal.

Based upon how the Twinkleland, Gainland and twinklelator sound that I have this new pedel from Peter I am sure is something very different and of the highest quality. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

Faaaarrrrr from it. From the video (which it's in Dutch) I will translate in English.

Peter van Weelden.

"Yeah you can throw some parts together for say 200 Euro and come up with something acceptable, or you can start with a clean sheet and make the best pedal ever! haha that's a different way of doing things.... well we pulled that off".

Interviewer: So how come your choice for transistor and not tube since you have achieved such a high level in the tube business??

"In order to make a good sounding tube pedal, it would have been a lot more expensive because of power supply, tubes are more expensive... for about a year of R&D we didn't believe we could pull it off... we kept asking ourselves.. is it going to work? because we have such high standards... but we couldn't throw away a year so we continued, and we are really happy with that.

"Some people won't buy certain pedals because they will only work well with certain amps like a fender combo or a marshall amp... we made a pedal that will work on any amp.. when Joe came to the office to play the prototype the first thing he took was a cheap transistor combo from my neighbour... "show me!"he said, and mission accomplished".

"The large part of the sound is in the pedal, and therefore not so much in the interaction with the amp"...

"People who play the prototype have been amazed at the dynamics... they cannot believe it is a transistor based pedal... you feel the ellasticity of a tube amp... it's not like hitting against a wall".

But okay that interview was a year ago.. now the pedal is ready.. I want to hear if it lives up to all the strong words...

I want it...

Re: Van Weelden Royal Overdrive Pedal.

Surprised he didn't go to Dunlop and have it made. I thought he has a contract with them with the signature fuzz and Wah (I have both)

Ron, I bet it is quality, but even the Zendrive and dumblesque pedals are modded TS pedals with tweaked clipping sections, even when the claim of being different is made.  Other popular mod platforms are the Marshall Bluesbreaker pedals and the Electra distortion pedals (which lovepedal has modded umpteenth times). Here is a blog that takes pedals apart and figure them out:

Honestly the first company to have a real new design concept was Swell pedals, which were tube drive pedals with real full sized preamp tubes and full analog circuitry.  Swell recently went out of business, unfortunately.  Anyhow, I would love to see a gut shot of the pedal.  Also, how much better/different would this be compared to the Ethos Overdrive?

Re: Van Weelden Royal Overdrive Pedal.

Am I reading correctly that some of those boards are $7,000? How do you use them as opposed to a pedal?

Hi if you have some of Peters equipment then you will know what I mean. I have the other pedels you mentioned and ok mybe they are modded but still differrent. Also I consider Peters eqipument in  league of there own like my Carol Anns form my friend Alan and Catagory 5 from Don Ritter. As with everything there is not wrong or right answer. It is in the ears of the listiner. Cheers Ron

That's what I have now. Lets see the price and reviews first although his reputation precedes him.

I believe your thinking of Jeorge Tripps.

I thought it was BK Butler who designed the tube drive pedal? The Butler Tube Driver is a fantastic pedal! If you ever get the opportunity to try one you'll be amazed.

you have misunderstood my post. It is meant to be read as "new pedal design, all tube overdrive in while."  surely BK Butler got there first but that is an already old design.

I have owned several tube drivers and they are great pedals.  My only tube pedal now is the Celestial Effects WTF? which combines a fixed wah, octavia, fuzz, and tube overdrive all in one pedal.

Nope, Joe has a signature Wah and Fuzz Face.  Check the Bonamassa site under equipment or the Dunlop site.
