JOE BONAMASSA On BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION - "As Far As I’m Concerned, My Involvement Is Pretty Much Done"

Blues rock guitarist JOE BONAMASSA has revealed that his future with BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION - the band featuring vocalist/bassist Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH, TRAPEZE), drummer Jason Bonham (LED ZEPPELIN) and Derek Sherinian (DREAM THEATER) - "is pretty much done."

Speaking to Corbin Reiff from Premierguitar.com, Bonamassa was asked about the status of the band:

"As far as I’m concerned, my involvement is pretty much done, and I’ll tell you why: Originally, I did it for the same reasons I did the stuff with Beth Hart and ROCK CANDY FUNK PARTY - it was an excuse to play a different kind of music that I don’t get to play normally.

The first two records were a blast - the band is fantastic when the Ritalin kicks in, the ADD goes away, and everyone’s focused. It’s a devastatingly good rock band of the early-1970s type, and Glenn is a fantastic singer—just one of the best ever. So I did it and did a nine-week tour in 2011 that really, by the end of it, wasn’t fun for me. It wasn’t because I didn’t like the cats in the band, but it was just too much—too much involved in getting people from place to place and getting the band onstage. Everybody seemed to be very tense, and it made my crew very tense, and it’s not the way I like to tour. I run a family—I have 21 people who go on the road with me all the time, and if you asked them who was the cause of the least of their problems, they would say me. Unless there was no Diet Coke—then it’s a huge [expletive] problem, and either I’m going to the supermarket or somebody else is [laughs].

But it just wasn’t fun for me anymore. All the stuff that Glenn says in the media, essentially pinning it on me—that I was the reason for the band’s lack of touring and the band’s lack of future. It became rapidly not fun at all. It would be dishonest of me to get onstage and pretend like I’m having fun to please the band. I’m just not the guitar player for that band, but unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be any out-of-work guitar players in L.A. that they can get. There are so many guys that can fill that role and I would be the first guy to queue up and buy a ticket. So that’s my story with it. I’m happily not involved anymore, but I’m happy with the legacy that I left with that band and happy with the records we made. It was a great three years for me."

Classic Rock Mag & Blabbermouth have also printed it and it's just been announced on Planet Rock.

It's certainly not a surprise to me.

Re: Latest Joe interview on the end of BCC

Very interesting comments as a relatively new fan who bought - and enjoyed - those records.

Re: Latest Joe interview on the end of BCC

I posted this interview a few days ago in "Joe's Interviews" with a link in the gear section for the players, but few noticed.
It was a nice ride while it lasted, and it lasted far longer than we thought it would.
BCC is finished as it was. Enjoy the memories. I have a framed and band-signed Secret Gig poster hanging on the shrine wall. Now a museum piece. hmm

Rick, I noticed, I read, I liked.  Thanks.

Re: Latest Joe interview on the end of BCC

I don't think anyone is surprised. Hey, Joe is in the fantastic position that if he doesn't want to do it, he doesn't have to do it. More power to him.

Re: Latest Joe interview on the end of BCC

Nice to see Joe's statement.  No mystery, makes sense.  FWIW, I'd like to see BCC carry on with another guitar player (and of course I'm always looking forward to what Joe is doing next).  IMOH it was a good band, and could still be a good band with another guitar player.  Glen, Jason and Derek are all pretty awesome.

Re: Latest Joe interview on the end of BCC

So now we know.
I am sure BCC can get a replacement for Joe.
Who? - that could be a topic on the forum.
Glenn appeared to be the 'project manager'
so I guess It's his move now.

Re: Latest Joe interview on the end of BCC

Who on here would still go and see BCC without Joe?

I think I would.

Re: Latest Joe interview on the end of BCC

Super great band.  Loved the ride.

Still, I certainly wouldn't mind if they found the right guitarist to carry on.  I still think John Sykes might have great potential.

Re: Latest Joe interview on the end of BCC

Well, I've got three great records out of BCC so far.  Be interesting to see where they go now.  Not that I wouldn't buy any more of their albums etc., but to me, the major 'draw' factor (of Joe being the guitarist) is just not there now.

My only regret is not seeing the original 4 in a live show context...

Re: Latest Joe interview on the end of BCC

I'll be the first to say...who cares?

I tried sooooo hard to get into that band but just couldn't. And hard rock is my first love. My loss I guess.

Re: Latest Joe interview on the end of BCC

I was holding out faint hope for a kiss and make up thing. Its really a shame that Joes done with it.That interview sheds the light and I have no problem with his decision.I would give the band the benefit of a doubt with a new guiyar player.
On the flipside I would love for Joe to do some more projects in the futere playing rock.I'm sure there could be other cats to rock with.I have enjoyed all the side projects to date,so another would be great if it ever happens.

Sykes would be a good fit when/if they tour again but he would be difficult to record with. I've read he's a bit of a perfectionist that tends to take forever when recording. He, Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan were working on a project last year but Sykes soon left because, in Portnoy's words; "John's kind of a 'wait, wait, wait' guy." That's not how BCC has worked in the past, obviously.

Tony Franklin tweeted last night that he is laying down the bass for Sykes' solo album...which should be coming out later this year. I am slightly disappointed by this as I thought there would be a Blue Murder reunion...oh well...I can hope. John's Bad Boy Live cd just shows what the guy can do...I bet it will be a shredfest! If Sykes was in BCC it'd be like two suns colliding...battle of the egos...and actually, I think John would win.

Franklin and Sykes together again?? That's an auto-buy for me. Those two, with Carmine Appice on drums in Blue Murder were spectacular. Too bad they only lasted for that one album. What a monster THAT was.

...forgot to mention that Appice retweeted Franklin! But he's not part of it...working with Cactus instead (no bad thing though). Blue Murder's debut is one of the all time greats. I even enjoyed Sykes' love-songs album...great writer and composer, singer and axeist. You've got to give him most credit for '1987'.
Whatever happens...anything with Sykes is an auto-buy!!
