Topic: Just When You Thought You Could Browse the Forum in Peace...

...BOOM. Yeah, I know. Tried to put together an explanation to open with, more than once, nothing but FAIL. So, instead, you get this:

  • My deepest apologies to my friends here for leaving so abruptly, and staying absent for so long. You folks deserved better, and I hope you know you weren't the reason I vanished. I just...had to go, is all. But I am sorry for any hurt or worry that may have caused.

  • If I mess up again, please blame Patty! She's the one who has been conducting a stealth campaign via backchannels for months to lure me back into the fold. And it worked, 'cause here I am. But here's the thing: You don't blame the fish for winding up in the boat, you blame the fisherman. And that would be my dear friend not far to my east here in beautiful Iowa. (I think she may have splurged a little at Bass Pro Shops to get the job done, too.) Love her I do, but blame her you must if I turn to the Dark Side up in here. Is all I'm sayin'...   wink

Of late I have been spending my time doing this ( http://shuinexile.blogspot.com/ ), and if you have kids still in school, or know and care about a K-12 teacher in your life, or especially if you're in that racket you should please stop in if you get a chance. Everything you could ever want to know about what is going on in my world is right there. Also, if you have an anteater fetish by any chance, you won't be able to stay away once you've been in for a visit.  And, of course, there are periodic shout-outs to Joe that I slyly drop in whenever I get the chance as well. Speaking of Joe...

To Joe, if he should happen to read this: I owe you the biggest apology of all. This place is a wonder and a treasure, and if it or your reputation got hit by a ricochet from my childish exit, please know that am sorry, more than I can say. That said, if you don't come back to my neck of the woods at least once more before I croak, I will totally haunt you, including going poltergeist backstage and driving the techs nuts trying to keep up with all the guitars that keep mysteriously going out of tune...

Come back to Iowa soon, Joe. Do it for the children, your children (those beautiful guitars we all love nearly as much as you do)...

I obviously have a staggering amount of catch-up reading to do, but before you know it I'll be back to trying to make a positive contribution to the site with some posts, resuming my snail-like crawl toward Bonametal-dom (also on my Bucket List, bee tee dub). In the meantime...

20 pounds of love in a 10-pound sack to one and all,

Geez Coach. I have no idea what went down and hope I wasn't a part of it. I've been known to put my foot in my mouth more than once smile Regardless, I'm glad you're back. Your comfy chair is waiting for you. I'll check out your blog because I've always enjoyed your gift for words. Welcome home wink   Cathy

Re: Just When You Thought You Could Browse the Forum in Peace...

It's nice to see you again, Coach. I swear just like two days ago I was thinking, where has Coach been, you were around so much when I first joined last year and then you disappeared.  I figured you were just busy with your school stuff. Nice to have you back.

Re: Just When You Thought You Could Browse the Forum in Peace...

I too stayed away. But this place is home. And I've made some dear friends through this portal. I might not agree with them, but I love them just the same.

Coach, I'm glad your back.
Thanks Patty. Your a sweetie!!!!

You weren't, believe me. My leaving here was just collateral damage from a Big Bang elsewhere in my life, is all. I doubt that I'd ever tell the whole story in full, because that's not what Joe's site is for, but it IS coming out as I can manage here and there on the blog, which has been very therapeutic, as I hoped it would be when I launched it on my birthday, February 18. I'd rather keep it out of this place I treasure, though...

As for the comfy chair, thanks, I'm sure I'll use it eventually, but I can't sit down for awhile because I've got some running around to do in here. I'm days away from the date I had calculated would be my Bonametal Day, which is now back in the distant future, but until then I'm going to try to get a few posts in where I can, get as close as I can before that deadline, and then think about what might have been had I not been, you know, a complete tosser (as our kin from across the pond might say). You can tell me about the upholstery if you like, though...   wink

I give all credit for any stray thoughts of me you may have experienced to the awesome karmic power of Joe's Biggest Fan. All part of her plan, don't you see. Do NOT doubt Ms. Murray's power...

You know Spider, I do kind of dimly remember that, though it is normally my way to try not to pry too much into such things. You were always in my "heavy rotation" when I was a regular, and I'll be keeping a special eye out for your shizzle as I work on catching up. Looking forward to that...

Isn't it funny how often words like "family" and "home" come up when we talk about this place? Come to think of it, it isn't really very surprising at all...

Glad to be back among so many that I hold dear. I'll be back to derailing and/or hijacking all y'all threads any minute now...   big_smile

Hey, welcome back Coach! I was wondering what had happened as well. When someone drops off the edge of this old board it gets you thinking the worst. I'm glad it wasn't that!
You've got a heap of catching up, unless you have been a prime lurker. Joe has been a busy boy. Be sure and catch the Rock Candy Funk Party foray he did, along with a heap of other cool stuff. smile
I'll lurk on your blog and see what drives you to stay away so long. wink
Thanks to PLJ for dragging you back to the fold. You were missed.

Me too! At my age, you can never be sure!  big_smile   I will say, in all candor, that there were a few days sprinkled in there where such a turn of events would have had a certain appeal...

You've got a heap of catching up, unless you have been a prime lurker.

I went cold turkey, early on, but then the Murray Mojo started up, and before long I was in full-on lurker mode, trying to time it so as run minimal risk of anyone noticing I'd poked my snout into the joint. Once in awhile I'd see a thread title that would make me go away entirely for a few days, and a couple of times I'd notice a username that I'd learned to avoid, and that would have the same effect. But the lurking had its effect, and now I have a bunch of barebones ideas about the big stuff that's been happening, and plan to take some time filling in those blanks...

Straight up, I'm saving RCFP until I can emerge fully from the cave; don't want to waste it until my mind is clear enough to experience it fully engaged. Right now, I'm still a good 10-12 paces from the entrance, but that's progress. I have read quite a bit about it, though, and the voices whose opinions I esteem most around here seem pretty pleased, so I expect I will be as well...

I'll lurk on your blog and see what drives you to stay away so long. wink

Nice to BE missed, if that makes sense. A bit of a blogosphere tip, though, Rick. If you're going to go in and comment and stuff as unknown, kinda defeats the purpose if you turn around and self-out yourself to me the first chance you get!  big_smile

In all seriousness, glad you stopped in, and it put a big smile on a face that hasn't seen many of 'em for awhile to learn you were the first of my Bonabuds to drop in and sit a spell.  Crazy excellent that little discovery is...

One day at a time. Just one, dear Lord. And then, if it works out, I can try another...

20 pounds of love in...jeez, I don't have to type it out EVERY time, do I?  wink

Hi welcome back coach, good to hear from you again. With teaching nowadays you can never guess why people may go missing. I usually frequent here in the mornings before classes begin and at night with a beer. I find this forum a good, mainly friendly stress break with  like minded people all brought together by Joe. Keep up the attendance and you will hit Bonametal before you know it. big_smile

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)

Re: Just When You Thought You Could Browse the Forum in Peace...

Hi Coach.  Good to hear from you again.  When I joined last May you were one of the first to welcome me and answer so many of my questions. so I am sending you much love over the wire that this dark time is passing and you will emerge better than  before. I have posted here before that Joe and his music got me through a hard time.  Glad  you are going to give it a try again.  May we see  and hear from you more.

No, see...now I gotta get all teacher-y and explain that particular expression (which I learned from an old boss of mine): When you put 20 pounds of something in a sack meant to hold 10, the sack is going to burst, and whatever is inside will just get all over the place.

Now the first time I heard my boss say it, of course, he wasn't talking about love. His went more like "Well, THAT sure was 20 pounds of stupid in a 10-pound sack."  wink

But in the fullness of time, he explained to me that he had learned the phrase from his father, who had learned it from his father, etc. He said you hear different versions of the same basic concept fairly often in the deep south (Jim was from Houston by way of North Carolina). I actually heard a version of it in some dialogue on Justified last week...

So you see, my dear friend, if I only gave you 10 pounds, your sack wouldn't burst, and then that love wouldn't spread...

*sigh* Hard to tell I miss being in my classroom, isn't it...   sad

Anyway, thanks to all for the kind words and the warm welcome. I have lifted a paw today, and am considering taking another step toward the mouth of the cave...

I'll say welcome back coach, however, I did not know you were gone!  I'm new here.

I quickly noticed too that "family" and "home" are indeed words to describe this site and it's members.  I expect we'll talk later.

Yeah, welcome back coach...like lots of others, I noticed your absence and assumed other things were getting in the way.
I've had some (short) stretches where things get so busy I just don't find the time to get here.

Re: Just When You Thought You Could Browse the Forum in Peace...

Too many replies since my last drop-in to do the quote thing, so let's try this...

  • Rocket: The smilie will NOT shield you from my wrath. Look at me in the avatar, and tell me what that would look like with a white-boy natural. "Kotter"???  You shall pay for your insolence!  big_smile

  • MINI_Zoso: Welcome to the Bona-Matrix. Do NOT swallow the red pill!  (One of the things I miss the most was hangin' out greeting newcomers in that thread. Hope to get back to that soon.)

  • gary: Thanks, my brother. I am familiar with "Chicago" style, but prefer the more ancient tradition I call Irish Diplomacy (involves nudity, blue body paint, and decapitations)...   wink

  • Bill:  One of the voices I missed the most, as it happens, and good to connect again. I'm more active now because of the blog thingy, but oddly enough the energy I get from hanging out in here again seems to expand the available time. This place, for me at least, is a kind of reverse time-suck. No matter how often I visited/posted, I seemed to be more productive elsewhere when I was posting than when I lurked or just stayed away altogether. This place's Special Sauce seems to give me the drive to get my other stuff done faster, so I can come back sooner. Very cool.

For those keeping score at home, I made my first couple of posts since forever ago today (not counting this thread). I predict a veritable Johnstown flood in the weeks to come. Prepare yourselves...  wink

Good to hear from you too! If you're talking about the picture in the "About Me" section of the blog page, that's actually a pic a student took of me backstage directing a show a few years back. One of the best pics ever taken of me, and EASILY my favorite candid of me of all time. Kid ambushed me...  wink

Did I mention on here before I took off how awesome that bobblehead you hooked me up with looks sitting with its brother atop my Class 5?  If not, let me say it now...thanks again, that was a mensch-y thing to do...
