I've never really understood the Adele hysteria. Ok so maybe 'hysteria' is not the right word, but I don't get it. Yes, she's got a good voice and all, but I have a hard time grasping the reason for her meteoric rise and buh-zillion album sales. Is there an endearing human interest story to go along with Adele's music? Was it a matter of timing, where there was a gap in the music industry that Adele uniquely filled?

Before you all light me up here, I'm not bashing her or her music. I find her stuff pleasant enough when I'm on the mood for it, but I'm just not captivated. And I love female vocalists...in fact I tend to prefer them.

Anyone?

very agreed! She has an interesting voice, and certainly a recognizable style, but her popularity & success really does seem out of proportion to me, but tbh i've never given it much thought till she won the Oscar there, read the lyrics to 'Skyfall' and you'll see how shaky some of it is

But whatever, i'm open minded

Hi Elena, welcome to Joe's Forum.  Glad to hear you like Adele as well as Joe, like me. You can take it from me - Adele is the real deal - nothing 'fixed' or made up about our Adele. What you see and hear, is what you get - love her or loath her. She ain't doing too badly so far, is she!

Re: Adele

it is interesting that because of her huge success she is considered or questioned to be from the manufactured side of the business so gets attacked by what I can only describe as music snobs. When her breakthrough has to be celebrated surely? - She writes her own stuff, can play an instrument, can sing in tune, does not fit the stick-thin stereotype image, talks cor-blimey and is prepared to drop a few f-bomgs when pushed... Good on you girl. And as I have said before most importantly she has inspired 1000's of kids to sit down at a piano and play (ask any music teacher in school about how they have had enough of hearing "somebody like you"). Without people like this there is no future for music....

The industry is at risk from some very clever commercial people like Simon Cowell who play to medicrity and image with awful naff-ness like Cheryl Cole, that is your enemy guys.

... and no use knocking the fact that Adele has had a few covers "make you feel my love" and Skyfall was written for her, sorry to break this to you guys but Joe has a few covers in his repertoire, and blues/rock came out of copying others and putting a slant on it

Adele - 21 - I Found A Boy (2011)

I thought I told you, he'd be home soon
Couldn't help myself, you're too good to be true!
I fall short each time,
Every time he ain't here,
You and your charm creep closer in here,
Like a fool for fire I fall, with my pride and all!
Like a bomb before explosion,
Ticking by your call.
You're the wiser one, disguised from greed,
And I'm just a child who belongs on her knees.

But I found a boy who I love more,
Than I ever did you before,
So stand beside the river I cried,
And let yourself down!
Look how you want me now that I don't need you!
So, you thought that I would crumble to my knees
At the first sight of you, crawling back to me
To whisper 'will you leave your man?'
Cause you sweared that this time you can stand by me. I won't stand by you!

Cause I found a boy who I love more,
Than I ever did you before,
So stand beside the river I cried
And let yourself down!
Look how you want me now that I don't need you!
I ain't yours for no taking,
You must be mistaken
I could never look in your eyes, and settle for wrong
And ignore the right

Well I found a boy who loves me more,
Than you ever did before.
So stand beside the river you'll cry
And let yourself down!
Look how you want me now that I don't need you!

She should stick to poetry.  The lyrics read great.  She sings good.  On the song you linked, the guitar has to go! Yuck.  Bad mix between the 3-lyrics, singing (yes, nice), and guitarist (whomever it is! yikes)  Poetry part of the modern woman sticking it to men in the real world the way men stick it to men, women, & children-she's got it perfect!  Stick with it, even if it takes you bitter babe.  Hope not.  But, I think bitter can turn into Better, anyway, eventually.

Appropriate for any artist as a fair comeback! If she is your daughter or niece or something, I am sorry to sound abrasive like Simon, that is, sorry to you and her.  Either way, she has real talent, not sure about the outlet flowing sweet enough for my tea.

I give her credit, she's doing it, not phony, obvious she can do what she does organically at least.  Huge to me just on wherewithal and courage, regardless of how I feel otherwise!

Re: Adele

Adele definitely has a great voice and I really like "Rolling in the Deep" and "Rumour has It". I wish she would do more like that, maybe some soul, blues stuff with a really good guitarist and band instead of the ballads she usually does. Her voice would be great with that. But, I guess she knows what she's doing because she certainly is raking in the awards and money.

Thanks for taking a positive view point nmagcorn. You know, the worlds her oyster now. I wouldn't be surprised if she spread her wings, genre wise. Adele will never stray far from who she is, and what she knows. She  also has the best management around her as well.
She's happy, she's in love, and now she a mother. Expect next, a song or two along those lines .

Stu ~ this is the same feeling I have about Taylor Swift, I'm not captivated at all, but maybe its more that I'm not a big country fan.

I really like Adele; I started listening with the 21 CD. It is mysterious sometimes why some artists really catch on, like Adele.  Adele is a HUGE talent...just stop and think about artists that have become extremely popular and they aren't even talented! (big business) Timing sometimes works for an artist - was Adele the best thing to hit since Amy Winehouse?

Besides Adele's talent, I think some of her atypical qualities & unique personality have helped propel her popularity...she's raw, honest, sassy, and not skinny...she's more human because she's not perfect. I don't think Adele would let anyone force her to loose weight, stop drinking or smoking unless she wanted to do it for herself.  You go girl!

With that said, it will be interesting to see how the rest of her career unfolds. Is it possible that she wrote her best material because of her emotional state of being dumped by her ex beau? I remember reading a fan comment about Clapton one time, the man wrote his best stuff when his love life was a mess or he was expressing some serious pain & sorrow. Being happy doesn't always = great songwriting. lol

With Adele's vocals & youth on her side, her possibilities are endless, segueing towards soul/ blues is an exciting thought nmagcorn! wink

Yeah. Her music doesn't float my boat but as has been said, her voice is ok and she's attractive.  I'd chalk the sales up to the female tweeners who drive that market. Good for her. That market will never come the way of classic rock and blues anyway.

To me she's just a woman with a really good voice and doesn't seem created by producers or a record label. Seems down to earth and a good story.

Re: Adele

Yeah I hope I didn't come off sounding harsh. I am drawn to her organic vibe as well. I was more of a pondering why the public latched on to her vs. so many other voices that are also good. Maybe that's it - the raw, honest, sassy and not having that commerical cookie-cutter appearance. And truth to be told I've never really sat down with a full CD, just TV and youtube.
