Topic: Spent the evening with Buddy Guy!

My fiancé and I got to see Buddy perform last night, and it was awesome!! This was our 3rd time seeing Buddy together, and he was on fire!! Great show! If you haven't had a chance to see this "Legend" in concert, you are robbing yourself of a good time - Jonny Lang was the opening act, and honestly, we both wish we would have showed up an hour + late for the show, and just enjoyed Buddy - Jonny was a definite disappointment - Not only with us, but listening to the others speak during intermission, it appeared to be the general consensus amongst the concert goers!

+1  on both counts! Buddy is always great and Jonny has lost whatever he had.

Buddy can still play.

Who doesn't smile when they're around Buddy? smile Sorry to hear about Jonny. I had high hopes for him in the early years. I'm glad he's sober and has embraced his Faith, but I do feel his music has changed, and not for the better.  Shame he didn't have Quinn open.

Okay, guys, I seriously can't see where everybody's saying that Jonny Lang isn't good live. I saw him at Crossroads, and I've watched numerous live videos from the last couple of years, and I fail to see it. Great guitar playing, great singing, and still very passionate in his approach. Now, if you don't like his direction of music in recent years that's one thing. But as far as the quality of his musicianship and singing, I just disagree.

I agree with Deezer here. In fact, quite honestly, while I loved Buddy at both the 2007 and 2010 Crossroads festivals, the two times I've seen him with his band - once in 2007 and in 2011 - I was at least mildly disappointed for different reasons. At the 2007 show he played a very short set - I think maybe an hour. It was a really hot, muggy evening and an outdoor gig so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. 2011 was at a festival with Buddy as the headliner and he had his own soundboard/crew and they had serious sound problems that required Buddy to literally stop the show after about 15-20 minutes to get it sorted and that took quite a while. In the end we only got about 3 or 4 songs from Buddy.  On the other hand, I've seen Jonny about 4 times in the same time frame - last was back in 2010 - and I was never disappointed in the least.

Re: Spent the evening with Buddy Guy!

I heard the recent Jonny live album and thought he had recovered his voice nicely and always thought he had the guitar chops. I first saw him in Boston in 1999 and hadn't realized what a crowd pleaser he was to the women

Re: Spent the evening with Buddy Guy!

Maybe Jonny just had a bad night- Like I said, it wasn't just us, the buzz in the lobby during intermission was the same, lots of disappointment - I was excited to see Jonny, I had never seen him before - His singing, well, you couldn't understand anything he was singing, almost like he was singing too hard, or trying to be very raspy, and he did a LOT of falsetto type singing, which was WAYYYYY off key most times - He came out with a Les Paul, which I thought was pretty cool - tone was decent - He had a couple small amps up there, but I didn't get close enough to see what they were. Does anyone know what he uses off the top of their head?

I wasn't trying to piss all over Jonny, or his fans, just stating our experience - His band was cool though - my favorite part of his set was the part where he and his guitar player traded licks for a while, and his drummer was badass!!! Probably the roughest part, other than the falsetto singing, was that he drug his songs out way too long and it seemed like whatever he was trying to do got lost in the translation so to speak

That was my exact complaint when we saw him last. It was like a broken record at the end of the songs and the unintelligible singing as well.

He's got a few Fender amps. For larger gigs head and speakers; smaller venues usually smaller Fenderrs. And maybe it was an off night - he HAS had vocal problems in the past

Re: Spent the evening with Buddy Guy!

I saw Buddy Guy 1992 - the last time he visited Vienna...
What a Line up !
Started with Johnnie Johnson, followed by Screaming Jay Hawkins.
Before Buddy Guy came my favorite John Campbell...
A great evening - sad that Buddy Guy is the last survivor sad !

Would be great to see him again... in Vienna...?
