Re: Guitar Center Blues Masters featuring Joe Bonamassa Contest

Hello!

Thanks everyone that's been checking these updates from me out I just tried the song Blue and Evil again, adopting some of my own stuff to it for the contest. I shared the last work in progress. Just wondering if this second attempt is better then he first one. Also, your thoughts on this song. I used a different tuning and chilled out some more.

I hope to just get feedback form you all to improve my entry. I appreciate any time it takes to look at these videos. I know time is scarce. I am sorry if it is novice and sloppy sounding. Just we all got to start some where.

All the best. - Donnie Bugden (A.K.A. - Ok, Enough)

Cheers!

Re: Guitar Center Blues Masters featuring Joe Bonamassa Contest

Jay - Well done!  That was great.  I cannot play confidently with a capo yet, but I can see how you got it to work with the open string riffs on 'Happier Times'.  Inspired me to try that as well. smile

+1 on the 'middle Eastern' influences too.  Your playing style and vibrato technique does remind me of some great sitar players that I have watched.  You SHOULD enter the competition.  Go for it...

My initial thoughts would be to play with the song and not over the song. It sounds like you are doing your own thing without playing to the track. Try playing to the tempo of the track and not your original song. That might make it meld a little better.

Use this contest to showcase your playing to Joe's tracks and not necessarily incorporating original material that could stand on it's own in another fashion. I understand this contest to be about a contestants best blues riffs and playing and not something like a songwriter challenge.

Hopefully some of this feedback has been helpful. This attempt was much better than the first. Good luck and keep working on it.

Devan thanks for checking out and kind words.

A few years back joe was going through a "phrasing phase" and that inspired me with the eastern bends......dug that.....Derek trucks does similar deal, but with slide.

Yeah, Derek is big on eastern music and phrasing. He listens to some obscure stuff.

I don't think you are supposed to sing in the video, but I'm guessing you know that. I believe it is supposed to be playing a guitar to the backing track and nothing else. It's real hard to hear your resonator over the song, so you might want to play with that some more.

Greetings Gang.....

So, downloaded the tracks and been having a blast jamming to them......put together a little video, not sure will enter, but had fun nonetheless.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDPAb2fc … ture=share

In the video, the GOLDIE collection is featured:  Strat / Tele / Morse Musicman ( GOLDIE-dized )

And in the Happier Times clip, the GOLDIE Flanger was used......only ( 2 ) of these pedals exist, and Joe has the other one, lol......silly I know....but fun!!!

The good news is, the next build is a replica of Joe's Clapton strat used in the ANDY dvd......enough of the gold for now!!!!

Enjoy the slopfest.....

Jay

Pretty cool. Love the guitars. You might want to double check the rules before you enter. I'm thinking they may not accept a submission if you play more than one guitar:

"Submission may only feature Entrant playing a 4-, 6-, 7-, or 12 – string acoustic or electric guitar, cigar box guitar, lap steel or pedal steel guitar to a single chosen backing track;"

I would hate to see you submit and be disqualified if they interpret that as a single guitar only. Just a thought. Regardless, that's some cool stuff you have there.

Re: Guitar Center Blues Masters featuring Joe Bonamassa Contest

Blues, thanks for kind words.

Truth be told, I know that there will be much much better players that will enter, so not worried......i liked the tracks to jam to, but since those are good songs.....did not want to play 6 minute guitar solos over them, or intepret the vocal melodies on guitar....so said to myself, let's jam some and highlight the GOLDIE collection.

Not even sure I will enter, and based on your quote there, would most likely get kicked out anyway, so will spread the love here in JB land.....

Please don't take my word for it. I think you should submit anyway. Or, record a video with just one of the guitars.

Think about it this way... there's a good chance JB will see most of the videos that gets submitted. Then you can say, "Ya, Joe Bonamassa once watched ME perform."

Peace

ok someone wanna be nice and post the keys for each song as joe and GC are not... thnx

Here's a few:

Story of a Quarryman - E
Blue & Evil - E (lots of opportunity for cool minor tones in that one)
Dust Bowl - I think it's G#
Ballad of John Henry - B - note that Joe tuned all the way to a "B standard" for his Royal Albert performance. It's real hard to solo with the strings that loose. There is an alternate tuning (tune your 6th E down to B). Or you could just solo in B and leave it in standard 440.
Happier Times - That's a simple Cm,Fm,Gm

That should get you started. Now go out there and create some blazing solos so you can show off your talent. big_smile

Re: Guitar Center Blues Masters featuring Joe Bonamassa Contest

Yeah, dust bowl is G#, fun track to solo too....

lonesome road in G is a short song rockin and good for jammin with ... that could be my choice
really I'm bummed he didn't pick a REAL 12 bar blues song...like sloe blues.!
thanx for the other keys i kinda figured most out ....

Re: Guitar Center Blues Masters featuring Joe Bonamassa Contest

Thanks so much Steve! I think you are 100% correct in I need to keep tempo better for this, work on the song as more an entire experience and focus on guitar not singer/songwriter stuff for this.

Thanks blues in seattle for sharing the keys these songs are in! I might not sing on this entry and just play guitar I think that might make the most sense and I am going to maybe try another of the songs out. Just start form a different idea all together.

I love all these songs that everyone is doing for this contest! So many orignal ideas and wishing everyone the best of luck in this and everything else. Thank you so much for watching these rough takes for something to enter into the blues masters. I appreciate the time and thoughtfulness of the comments on how I can improve my chances in this event. All the best, Donnie

Yes, the songs aren't really 12 bar, but most of your standard blues progressions and scale patterns will work fine with them. The songs with alternate tunings might be a bit tricky.

Blue & Evil is actually a great one for you to consider because the standard E blues pentatonics will work great for that song. It also leaves room for the other minor scale variations and gives you a great number of positions to play on the neck.

Good luck, can't wait to hear something.

You are welcome. I would really also like to suggest you try to work within the pentatonic scale patterns for these songs for your interpretation. Try to listen to the song and imagine melodies that could go with it. I firmly believe that the key to a great solo is when you can accompany the melody and accent the actual feeling of the underlying song. What I mean by that is that you try to remain true to the song itself and not go too far out with an interpretation. Uniqueness is great, but there is a threshold to that.

When you are deciding which song to play, look at each song and the lyrics that were made for them. There is a reason they are named the way they are (Slow Train, Ballad of John Henry etc).

Blues is about "going places" and the expression of feelings/emotions. The music is an extension of that and should represent the original feelings and intentions of the song.

That's just my 2 cents. Anyway, keep playing and have a fun time with it. That is the most important thing.

Good luck!
